Regarding the RE-speed oil fill neck, if I have any more problems with it I'm throwing it in the trash. Poor fitment on the block which required modifying with porting tools, my R-Magic oil cap won't screw onto the threaded portion, and to top if off there were metal shavings in the neck that I had to spend time cleaning so that they don't get into my oil pan. Not happy, to say the least.

what did you think about the extended filler neck i made? maybe i could send it somewhere to have copies made?

GoodfellaFD3S 07-22-09 10:17 PM

Tom, that's not a bad idea at all. where did you get the cap?

as Dan mentioned might happen, the neck itself isn't hitting the throttle linkage but any oil cap with a larger diameter than the neck will hit.

maybe use something like this mate?:

I should also mention I have a LIM heat blanket on the way from Elliot over at Turblown :)

A pair of teaser pics of the compressor housing that is in the mail to me. It was polished, had the 500R etched into it, then it was given a UV coating to keep the part permanently polished :icon_tup:

Tom, I sent you a PM with an idea...

Rich, how much was that coating to keep the compressor polished? Looks nice, thanks for the loads of ideas. I'll never be done with my car now.

however if you use a "custom" oil cap, this one will not work. it has a different thread...

i use the cap that came with it.

A lot. I'm not keeping track, keep in mind I do all my own work, and get everything at wholesale, plus have a lot of connections in the industry so typically if something is for my own personal FD i can get the parts even cheaper.

Another update, I just picked up a spare set of used Fikse FM5s and will most likely use them as track wheels. Plan is to disassemble them and have the center section coated in a black chrome powdercoat and leave the lips polished.

I also picked up a few quarts of this stuff, I figure I'll try it on my motor before recommending it to customers:

OneWheelPeel 07-25-09 09:28 AM

Hey Rich ... Looking great! :icon_tup: hopefully you can do mine up that way, the block at least ;).

I don't wanna barge in on the thread, but I saw you had issues with the Respeed filler neck. I wouldn't give up on it right away, you may have just gotten a bad one. Here are a few shots of mine during my test fit. Disregard the nastyness of the engine, thats why its coming to you!

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00131.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00132.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00133.jpg

No issues w/ the block fit...

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00134.jpg

My cap fit, but it took hours w/ a thread file, lapping compound and some fancy buffing wheels. I wasn't happy either, but I made it work.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00135.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...h_DSC00136.jpg

re: The interference w/ the TB, your issue might be that the GZ LIM pitches everything forward, and as you can see there isn't much room there to begin with. I'm using a huge cap too, so there my be room with the stocker or something smaller.

Not trying to defend Respeed here, just showing my experience with the part.

-Ken

Monkman33 07-25-09 07:32 PM

RE speed claims that their oil filler neck is compatible with the GZ LIM. The only reason I sold mine is because I was about to order a satin black one instead.

Uncle Hungry 07-25-09 07:51 PM

^ It is compatible, I use one with mine. It's close to the throttle body linkage but no interference with the stock cap.

GoodfellaFD3S 07-25-09 08:19 PM

That's another thing about it that annoyed me.....while spraying the inside of the filler neck with brake cleaner to rinse out all the metal shavings, the paint on it started to flake off.

theorie 07-25-09 08:25 PM

yo rich i'm coming out tomorrow. txt me in the morning before you head over so i can meet you there.

MOBEONER 07-26-09 08:50 PM

WORD!!!! you guys look busy as hell .
for a second there that 500r turbo looked a little small on that engine .
yo!! theorie that camera takes sick pictures.

GoodfellaFD3S 07-27-09 08:57 AM

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

She fired up with zero drama, not much smoke either :D. There is an exhaust leak, I think the TiAL wastegate isn't seated 100% properly. Car holds a rock steady 1050 rpm idle and has built some vacuum in the short time she's been idling.

On a side note, the RE Speed filler neck *does* fit with an oem cap, it is a very tight fit and the cap has to be oriented a certain way. My pimpin' R-Magic cap will not fit however, boo.

Thank to all those who helped/hung out/drank beer/took pictures/made fun of me: Tom, Marc, my brother Ryan, Bryan, and my dad.

More details and pictures to come :icon_tup:

Vids or it didn't happen :-P

Looks awesome! I'm now searching this thread for info on the exhaust manifold.

On a side note, you seem to have a pretty strong belief in coatings, but is there any evidence (besides anecdotal) that they will have longevity? I'm not questioning you, just the coatings!

That is the compressor inlet, it's the only spot you can source filtered fresh (unboosted) air. A nipple threads in that hole, and is for both rotor housing oil injectors and also for the oil filler neck. It keeps the OMP happy and also keeps my crankcase de-pressurized (ie no smokey exhaust). Some people just insert the nipple in the end of the air filter, I wanted a more 'hard mounted' solution.

What would you like to know about the exhaust manifold?

Re: the coatings, I had typed up a lengthy dissertation on the benefits some time ago that I'd have to dig up. I recommend clicking the link in my sig referring to the GB, that'll give you some info. My coater uses rotary-specific ceramic coating, and his product has been proven many times over in high powered rotary drag cars and road race cars :)

As far as quantifiable benefits, those are hard to come by......I can tell you my engine bay stays very cool, my EGTs are pretty low for my setup, and my turbo has always spooled very fast given it's size. I think it's all small stuff that incrementally adds up.

For the construction of my manifold, I would really like to have this done to it as well as the downpipe (or I could heat-wrap it I suppose). I already have a Gotham blanket so I'm in agreement with the effects of the coatings/blanket "stacking" to create a noticeable improvement in response. I just won't have a baseline, I'm going into this completely blind since my car has never been driven.

Thanks for the info and I'll check out your GB thread.

Understood. I was speaking in the broader sense regarding my setup---the lower EGTs are due to the full 4 inch exhaust (the dp in particular) and the state of tune as well as the water injection once on boost.

On another note, I was able to put about 20 miles on the motor yesterday. The car pulls very well at half-throttle and off boost, seems to be more torquey than my old motor. The clutch is very streetable, nice firm pedal and more forgiving than a 6 puck.
