rich this is a bit excessive i must say. i think your family needs to do an intervention.

MOBEONER 07-14-09 08:43 PM

WOW... looking at these pictures makes me embarrassed.... I have been slapping and hacking together my car to get it running for the carlisis BBQ. When i get there I will not open up my hood and i might just park it behind a tree or something. lol

GoodfellaFD3S 07-14-09 09:00 PM

Oh come on guys, my car isn't anything special.....Uncle Hungry has created a clone of mine, and there are some things about it I like better.....I might switch my efini emblems to the newer Mazda ones :D

Thanks to Theorie/Tom for taking such vibrant pics with his gazillion $ camera :)

Clone may be a bit much, aside from them both being vr r1's with 99 front's the simularities end, but thanks for the compliment. I'm flattered to be mistaken for you by the neighbors none the less. :)

darkphantom 07-14-09 10:24 PM

ill be watching this. took some ideas from your new build though!

Good luck with the build Rich :)

Also, I just got my Tweak-it/Chadwick single turbo airpump delete idler pulley in the mail :)

All my ceramic coated parts (exhaust mani, dp, brackets etc) are in the mail and arriving thursday. This should prove to be a productive weekend :icon_tup:

Awesome. You ever try capping off and protecting sensitive items and then pressure washing the bay? I sprayed mine down with oil eater and went to town on it with a washer when I had mine out. Worked really well and didn't take long.

Rich, are you planning a complete re-paint as well?

Nope, my paint is still in pretty good shape from the last paint job in 2003 :)

I considered it but didn't want to chance water getting into the electrical connections. Also my car is in the back corner of the shop away from the water.

Negative, charging car parts on my credit cards is a thing of the past thankfully

Update:

Modified my engine harness for the single turbo setup by deleting all unneeded connectors. I also installed the connector for the fast-acting intake temp sensor I recently picked up. I heat sleeved the entire harness with a combination of electrical tape, wire loom, DEI fire tape, and DEI fire shroud.

I installed some of the new oem parts I ordered for the engine bay, like the water pipe and brake booster line that run across the back of the engine bay.

Also took care of a bunch of odds and ends, like deleting the PCV valve and screwing on my FEED brake reservoir cap :)

Pics to come this weekend, hopefully of a built-up engine :D

no_more_rice 07-16-09 10:50 AM

I wish someone would be willing to modify new wiring harnesses (single turbo) for re-sale

Great build by the way. I wasn't aware it was so common to buy an all new engine. I'm so used to being an FC owner who looks under couch cushions trying to scrape together enough to buy used parts .

Monkman33 07-17-09 04:32 PM

Too late.

And it's a good thing he's balls deep into his build.... because his FD is the only loving he's going to get when the female counterpart discovers she can't get the new bedroom set with an empty checking account. ;)

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys :)

I'm at the shop today to build up the motor and have my camera, so expect a boatload of pics later on today :D

GoodfellaFD3S 07-19-09 10:41 PM

As promised......the first few pics are of the Gotham oil pan brace and stud kit, which was provided by my friendly pals from Sakebomb Garage :)

The fourth picture is of my GZ LIM, which I port-matched to the gasket as well as the intake ports. I'm trying out those 'phenolic' thick white LIM/UIM gaskets.....they're supposed to serve as a thermal barrier to keep heat transfer down.

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1248061349

Lastly is my engine wiring harness, which i modified for the single setup, removing all the connectors I didn't need. There is a ground that daisy chains through the harness so once you cut all the sequential connectors you need to solder the ground back to the ISC connector in order for it to work properly. I also went nuts with heat tape, heat sleeving, etc.

great work!

this thread is dangerous for me, getting too many ideas.

cpnneeda 07-20-09 04:41 AM

man oh man

I was slack jawed at first. Staring at the picture of the Gotham oil pan brace and stud kit. I could see the studs, but man did it take me a second to realize that the brace was black, and how nice and shiny your oil pan is, lol. Nice work Rich, you definately give me loads to consider.

Oh, I do have a question, I did my harness as well, I noticed the grounds daisy chained, but I swear I don't remember having to resolder it anywhere. All my connections were as they were supposed to be. I depinned instead of cutting, and left every ground that was in the harness intact. Which wire was it you had to solder if you can remember? Thanks.

PDViper77 07-20-09 10:16 AM

The exhaust manifold looks dope. Is that GZ LIM the same one I sold you? If so what fuel rail are you using with it?

the exhaust manifold (and entire turbo kit) is from A-Spec. I had my guy ceramic coat everything with his rotary-specific exhaust coating.

The LIM I bought brand new direct from GZ. I'm using a KG parts standard fuel rail with the two additional injector bungs sealed off.

GoodfellaFD3S 07-20-09 08:50 PM

First pic is of a pair of chromed alternators.....can you tell which one is stock and which one is 200 amp :D?

The rest are shots from varying angles of my engine. It's about ready to drop in.

Some of the parts pictured:

Tweak-it Racing/Chadwick airpump delete idler pulley kit
Super now alt/wp pulleys
RE Speed Oil Filler Neck
Exedy cerametallic twin plate clutch
Gotham Racing oil pan reinforcement brace
Sakebomb Garage oil pan stud kit
IRP Motor Mounts
(quite an amalgamation of companies no :D?)

oh and that new rear-view is pretty sweet too. the engrish description on the box is mad jdm yo!

Chadwick 07-22-09 12:04 AM

Your motor is looking great Rich! I have a question for you, why is your water pump pulley ribbed?

I have the same Oil fill neck as yours with the GZ lim and had to slot the holes and rotate it as it hit my throttle linkage. Does yours clear ok?

Thanks,
Dan

GoodfellaFD3S 07-22-09 07:12 AM

Dan, those are the Super Now pulleys from Japan, that is how they are constructed.

Regarding the RE-speed oil fill neck, if I have any more problems with it I'm throwing it in the trash. Poor fitment on the block which required modifying with porting tools, my R-Magic oil cap won't screw onto the threaded portion, and to top if off there were metal shavings in the neck that I had to spend time cleaning so that they don't get into my oil pan. Not happy, to say the least.

Uncle Hungry 07-22-09 10:37 AM

Rich, I see you had you stock oil filler cap in the neck. If that fits maybe it's the R Magic cap that's the problem?

Monkman33 07-22-09 01:48 PM

Oh crap!

I hadn't even done a test fit onto my engine with it. If I would have found these issues before hand, I wouldn't have sold it to you. My apologies, I sincerely hope there are no hard feelings.

Scrub 07-22-09 03:57 PM

dude your engine looks like it belongs in a race car...you better take that beast to more track days :) Lookin good home slice

Miata_mx5 07-22-09 04:48 PM

That's because his car is ready for the 200 mph nasty. (LOL it's probably BEEN ready for a while).

matty 07-22-09 05:44 PM

rich how much would u say you have into this car?
i am not knocking you at all. you gotta do what makes you happy in life. i am just curious.

CrispyRX7 07-22-09 06:19 PM

^^^^LOL by my own experience I'd estimate between $40-$50k in parts alone ;)
