Kilo Racing 3 Rotor FD Conversion

This weekend I'm making the trip down to Pettit Racing in West Palm, FL to drop off my car for a 3 rotor conversion. I'm also planning on widening out the back end of the car with molded flares to run 12 inch wide tires.

Curious if anyone would be interested in a log of the project and pics?

XSTransAm 07-08-04 09:19 PM

lucky bastard, and yes log and pictures!

obviousboy 07-08-04 09:23 PM

yes
log everything
video tape it.....
(I can host the vids for you, make them huge)

congrats and fuck you :)

the_glass_man 07-08-04 10:03 PM

Definitely provide updates and a log with lots of pictures. Must be nice to have that kind of coin laying around as Pettit charges a sick amount of money for the conversion. :D

GoodfellaFD3S 07-08-04 10:06 PM

Are you sticking with the stock cosmo twins?

Ya, how much is it going to set you back. I think we all would like pics and vids.

94RHDFD 07-08-04 10:18 PM

If I'm not mistaken it's a $35,000 swap unless your going single then it's going to be more, right?

rzograbian 07-09-04 02:55 AM

Wowooo! thats a lot of green! i am selling a 20b motor because i didnt want to try to put it in but dam! 35k!

ROTORhead93 07-09-04 03:02 AM

It should be manditory that whenever someone transplants a 20B into a 7, they have to video tape ALL the work, and take pics just for kiks.

Please dont forget to take pics and video tape it. :D

David Hayes 07-09-04 07:47 PM

Okay,

I'll log the project and take pics. As for video, I'm not that high tech. Also, I'm about 5 hours away from Pettit so I'm going to twist their arms into taking the pictures as the project progresses.

The cost - way, way too much, but you only live once, right? And my wife blessed it so I better get my a** down to Pettit before she realizes just how much it will be! She says I earned it - way cool, good wife!

As for the Cosmo twins versus single, I'm going twins for now. Cam and Pettit love them and rebuild them (ceramic coat also) to their specs. A single might be the next thing on the list though.

Hey Joel, did the box show up yet?

It's off to Miami!

iceman4357 07-09-04 08:11 PM

i cant wait till i graduate from college and make some real cash so i can do the same!!!

Hey, just tell her it's cheaper than buying an E46 M3, and creep away before she asks for a resale value comparsion;)

You're going to own a very exotic piece of hardware when it is done. Congrats.

Take pics, take video... and lots of them! If you need someplace to host pics or vids, I can probably hook you up, just let me know.

Hello,

The car is now at Pettit Racing awaiting the conversion. I took it down on Saturday and spent the afternoon with Cam, the owner. He took me to the track in his 3 rotor - quite the awesome car. At 6 lbs. of boost, the car does 375 hp to the wheels and has about 365 lbs. of torque. Cam claims it's the torque in the 3 rotors that makes the car special. I like the HP gains and the torque! Anyway, at 12 lbs. of boost, the car should easily reach 400 hp to the wheels.

I have several pics of Cam's car that I'll post soon.

I'm now in the planning stages for the conversion. Here's the laundry list as of today. Feel free to comment and suggest!

- 20B 3 rotor swap
- includes subframe
- huge customer front mounted intercooler
- NASCAR hi-flow radiator
- twin Cosmo turbos, reworked by Pettit and ceramic coated (will think about going single later)
- engine management system (brand to be determined by Cam)
- new wiring
- probably a bunch of other "under the hood" stuff I'm forgetting now

- back wheel flares molded into the car
- 18X9's and 18X12.5's probably Forgeline WC3's in silver (not polished) unless someone has a better idea.
- Track pro launch kit (street)
- coil overs (if needed)
- front anti-sway bar
- Track pro street differential mounts (if needed)
- big brake kit

- Pettit resonator mid-section
- Racing Beat dual tip exhaust

- brake ducts installed on my Pettit 99 spec front bumper to blend the front end in better
- Apexi side skirts
- 99 spec front lip painted gloss black to match 99 spec front end

Will update you soon!

dubulup 07-12-04 04:39 PM

wow.

I'm interested in the customer FMIC too  who is this lucky customer, and for extra can they make it with double D's??

Rhode_Dog 07-12-04 04:40 PM

Sounds like a good plan, can't wait for the next update!

yzf-r1 07-12-04 04:40 PM

I thought Cam's car put down 550 to the wheels...only at high boost?

PVerdieck 07-12-04 05:02 PM

I think the Wise rear flared fenders look a lot nicer than the Pettit ones, but they require more body work.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...5&pagenumber=2

CCarlisi 07-12-04 05:24 PM

RE ECU:
Make sure you specify to Cam what acessories you want to keep (eg power steering, AC, radiator fans, ect) because a lot of the stand-alone ecus have a limited number of AUX outputs. I was thinking about using an Electromotive TEC III on my car because I believe it has the most accurate ignition system on the market (-/+ 1/4 deg at 7000rpms), but ultimately decided against it because it only has 4 aux outputs. If you think you can get away with just 4 I think that is the way to go! Their prices have come down recently as well. The Tec III R can control a 2 or 3 rotor. With harness, timing wheel, and the basic sensors it costs just over 2 grand (if purchased from the right dealer).

Re Turbos:
What is the cost of having the Cosmo turbos upgraded? If you haven't already you should price shop it against doing a single before committing.

550 is flywheel @ 1 bar.

I think the opposite. They are just a "whimpy" looking. The pettit ones look very mean i think. I would go with the pettit rear and wise fronts maybe.

holy sh*t! :drool1: :drool1:

you'll put much more than 400 hp with 12 psi... hell 6 psi is good for 375 rwph.

Str8Down 07-12-04 08:04 PM

You should go ahead nad have the 6 speed tranny put in too. Then you don't have to deal with the crappy stock tranny.

why, what is wrong with the stock tranny?

The Cosmo 20B made approximately 300-320 flywheel horsepower (officially rated at 280 ps, the Japanese limit) @ 10 psi. How do you get 375 RWHP from only 6 psi?

moehler 07-12-04 09:00 PM

Are you talking to me? I just got that number from what David originally posted :).

TechTrix 07-12-04 09:26 PM

you get 375 because the motor is ported, you have a free flow exhaust, re-worked turbos, free flowing intake, bigger intercooler and a programable ecu

Not at only 6 psi, you don't. Having an extra rotor doesn't allow you to violate the laws of Physics.

Let's get real for a moment. A ported 13B with all the mods you mention and 10 psi might make 285-290 RWHP, yet a 20B will make another 80+ horsepower at the wheels with 4 lbs. less boost?

The 20B is, without a doubt, one of the most over-hyped engines in history.

SPOautos 07-12-04 10:46 PM

Well.....if you take 285 and add 50% for the 3rd rotor you'd get 427rwhp. Then if you take 40rwhp off for the 4psi less boost you'd have 387rwhp.

Sounds about right to me

I know of large single turbo 20B's making around 600rwhp on 93 octane.....I wouldnt call that over-hyped at all

Wait a minute. What time did the train leave Chicago again? Unfortunately, you can't make a linear correlation based on the percentage of the increase in displacement.

A stock 20B makes 300-320 flywheel horsepower @ 10 psi. So you're saying that it's reasonable that at only 6 psi, it will make ~440 horsepower (375 RWHP with 15% losses) because you added porting, a bigger intercooler and opened up the exhaust and intake? Do you know how absolutely ridiculous that is?

And how much boost were they running? I've yet to hear of one making that kind of power on pump gas. Please be so kind as to point me towards a dyno sheet or two.

I'm so jealous of your ability to afford this project, someday I'll be able to do the same, but damn, I was happy to be looking towards 300rwhp.

some people cannot be pleased.

rx7raca 07-12-04 11:56 PM

Instead of trying to guess and fight over how much power hes going to make, why not just wait and see? You guys worry to much about other peoples cars. Let him post a damn dyno sheet instead of trying to guess.

Jim~Are you saying its impossible to get 600whp on a 20b? I dont see that being a problem at all. Haven't you seen when the guys in japan made little over 700whp on the 2 rotor with that huge turbo? So why can't someone put a huge turbo and big ports and make over 600whp? It's all about the tuning, and I'm pretty sure pettit knows little about tuning. I think your to caught up in the v8 world:) downing the rotors.

All I have to say is lets wait and see.:D

Just food for thought, I believe the RE Amemiya JGTC car is running a little over 300 with the 20B in N/A. Granted, it's a racing motor....

David Hayes 07-13-04 08:06 AM

Wow,

Didn't know that I would create this much controversy with my post.

The Pettit conversion leave very little as stock. The engine is totally reworked, doweled, and ported. The intercooler is changed, and Pettit uses and tunes and aftermarket ECU. Pettit's "stock" turbos are also totally reworked including ceramic coating. So, the Pettit 20B will be no stock Cosmo engine.

Pettit claims 500 - 550 horsepower from this setup. I guess you can do the math to take this down to RWHP.

The figure I qouted was from Cam and his 20B car. He gave me a ride in it and I checked the boost he was using during the ride (between 6-7 lbs.). Cam stated the RWHP figure I wrote about.

It's all pretty irrelevent though. I'm a big dyno guy - this is the only way to really know horsepower and torque. I'll definately post these so you can see what the true numbers are.

FYI - What I am shooting for is not the highest amount of horsepower I can make, it's the highest amount of "reliable" horsepower. I'd be very happy with 375 to the wheels and it be reliable.
