welp.. i think ill need new irons.
i thought i was saving time by porting then cleaning everything up. this meant that i didnt really inspect the grooves much. never seen an engine that wasnt s4 with this issue. oh well. anybody have a good front and rear iron they want to sell me? Attachment 651877 Attachment 651878 |

so i had some questions
i put the engine together and all was well but i wanted the apex corner seal towards the primary non bridged ports. so first half of the engine i built normal, second half, a bit unorthodox.. i know people usually super glue the apex seals together but after a bunch of tries and frustrations, it wasnt working for me. the seals would break apart before i had everything toghether.. so i used a ratchet strap and pulled the front rotor half of the engine together, built the rear rotor onto the rear iron then put the front half on top, then flipped the whole thing over to get back to the tension bolts. it seems to have good compression just from spinning it over but i dont know. its stressful. do you guys think that was dumb or should it work? also, what other method is there to complete the build this way that doesnt involve superglue or man handling a half assembled engine? thanks https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/...70098110_n.jpg |
it's hard to even imagine what you did with ratchet straps and flipping things up and down ect.
If you think it fine then leave it, but I would of just sweated out the glue method until you got it. Took me a while my first time stacking but I had piece of mind at the end of the day knowing everything was done properly with no funny business. Good luck with the build though. |
I've heard of guys using Vaseline to hold the seals together during assembly. I hope it all works out for you.
|
I'm pretty sure it's good. I'm the type that doesnt trust himself so I tear it down to check and see if it went together right. I loaded it with vaseline but was still worried about the seals going the wrong direction. It feels and sounds like the rotary evolution built 20b sitting right next to it but you never know.
|
I hear ya. There is always that bit of doubt leading up to the first start after a rebuild. You've been around these cars long enough, I'm sure all will be fine.
|
Not sure how I overlooked this thread Steve, great progress, before you broke it anyway..lol.
Good thing is sounds like your competent enough to get it straightened out quick. I'll be reading... |
wait, this is DEREK!!!
i knew those pictures looked familiar. |

looks pretty good now. not happy with the water pump housing. the corrosion on this motor is insane. few hours in the sand blast cabinet and it still looks like that.. also picked up a new brain to run the half bridge. Attachment 649732 tomorrow is the big day where we put lots of time and effort into the car. things have been going relatively smooth so i hope the trend continues. |

Sounds and looking good man! That shot of SLC makes me half miss it.. Now you have the flow, whens the single happening?
|

|
^if you're gonna spend that kind of money on twins, then just wait a little longer, save up and get the BNRs. They're totally worth it IMO.

I put this on fb but hopefully I can get a bit more quality answers posting here
Issue today. Started rough and died. Didn't think anything of it. Started immediately and was fine. Drove about 5 miles no problem. Pull into parking lot and it stumbles and dies. Will not start. Catches but doesn't go. Eat dinner, come back to car Fires right up. Drives no problem. Maybe I'm low on gas? Stop at station, put 14 gal in 20 gal tank. Not low fuel.. hard time starting again. Get home runs fine. Starts fine. Idles fine. Paranoid as crap Ideas? Plugs and battery are fresh and this is an atypical anomaly. |
so with that problem that eventually killed the car dead plaguing me, i decided it was the fuel injectors and pulled them out and sent them off. 2 weeks later they came back and yesterday i installed them..
after a few hours of fighting, testing, troubleshooting, i ended up throwing in a set of junk drawer injectors because my fresh clean ones were d.o.a. contrary to what the company said. so car sufficiently flooded out and with questionable injectors and fresh plugs, she fired up and ran rough.. ran really rough. after a few minutes of 2krpm idle it seemed to clear up and i attempted to drive around the block. car sputtered under any load but otherwise seemed almost like its old self. about half way around my trip, the car just cut out and died. same symptom as before but now with a new twist... start up and cabin fills with smoke. smells electrical. freak out and shut it down. smoke instantly clears.. pop hood and start car again (which btw is getting tough to start again), starts blowing smoke everywhere. again smells like an electrical fire. finally find that my R2 trailing coil is split and spewing smoke and good all over everything. hoping that is my root cause but i doubt it. its my understanding that trailing coils do not do much in the way of starting and idling.. hopefully a full replacement of all the coils will fix my problem but im getting pretty frustrated at this point. this car was running strong and flawless and all of a sudden, everything is taking a dump on me. |
