my cars come and go just like everyone else. start a project, finish it. get bored and start seeing dollar signs.

well ive noticed as i get older, my cars stick around for longer. and up until last week, i had only two rotaries i figured id keep forever. my rx2 and the track dedicated fc. i think i picked up another one. still waiting on the day i can get an L10a cosmo and im closer to that goal every day but lets keep the tangents to a minimum.

like every fd ive ever owned, i knew about this one for years. same story as the rest. kid buys it. dumps a years salary in it. gets nowhere. gets discouraged and sells it for a loss. rinse and repeat 10-15 times and it finds its way in my driveway.

so here it is. in my driveway fresh off the tow truck
Attachment 679307

first order of business. ditch the mismatched and grotesque wheels for not mismatched and less grotesque
Attachment 679308

and finally start cleaning interior just to find toys
Attachment 679309

its riding high because its just a roller. motor set should be arriving on friday and ill start putting it in on the weekend.

it has some aftermarket front bumper that ill have to post a photo of so someone could identify it for me.
i think this will be my long slow pseudo restoration project. im going to focus on getting it running and it will stay in that state til i finish the rx2 project at which point it will be guns a blazin.

thanks for looking and keep checking in.

looking like a good platform to start with.

my99spirit 03-12-13 03:47 AM

seems like a great chassis to start with

my99spirit 03-12-13 03:49 AM

is it possible to.drive a rhd car here?

stevensimon 03-12-13 08:59 AM

I dont know where here is so I cant answer that. This car is a 93 touring that is converted so no legal issues for me.

ducman77 03-12-13 09:25 AM

Looks like a good base - best of luck with it!

Engine showed up. Has a few nice surprises with it. Hks oil pedestal thing, hks downpipe and all the vac lines have already been replaced with silicone.

I hooked the starter to a dead miata battery and got 95psi all faces at probably 75-100rpm.

No engine mounts or brackets on it though and i dont like the aluminum corrosion. Hope I can find some in my shed tomorrow
Attachment 678911

Decided to start looking at the engine bay and cleaning it up
Attachment 678912

Then I noticed something under the dirt that I thought was cool.

engine slid in like butter. seriously under 5 minutes to get everything to drop in and line up right. was a real treat.
Attachment 678748

need to get the ic and intake stuff and put it in and its ready to go i think. tomorrow ill hook the fuel lines and finish the coolant lines and try to fire it up.

Good Looking platform to start with. Def staying tuned

stevensimon 03-17-13 02:13 PM

finished up a few little things. still a few more little things but progress is progress.

fired up first crank

need a few studs for the dp and i need to replace the o2 sensor. electrical has some issues in the way that when the headlights are on, only one light goes up and when i shut the lights off it doesnt go back down. though they both turn on. only one tail light turns on. no turn signals. no running lights. fuel level gauge doesnt seem to go away and the exhaust temp light is stuck on.

stevensimon 03-17-13 05:10 PM

cleaned up a few things and found some studs/bolts for the turbo to downpipe.

engine in. car running well. strange to drive on the right side. going to take some getting used to.

tach doesnt work very well
speedo doesnt work at all
fuel level gauge doesnt work

few other small things to iron out but overall its a fun car.

RCCAZ 1 03-21-13 08:06 AM

^^Are the bumper bolts just loose in that pic, or is fitment that bad on the bumper? BTW, congrats!!!

Ceylon 03-21-13 08:13 AM

Looks great & grats on getting her going :)

I like the bumper - Don't think I've seen one before.

its not mounted 100% only 4 bolts from whoever mounted it before. which incidentally are all ovaled out. i have to work on fitment for everything forward of the doors. fender hood gap is off. headlight gap is so bad that it hits the hood. etc etc..

thanks guys. i think the most frustrating thing about the car was squeezing the dp in there.

DG35 03-21-13 11:52 AM

Congrats on your buy, car's looking good keep it up.

my99spirit 03-21-13 02:15 PM

that is really cool that it has green flaking it. You're moving right along on this project! Looking good

No issues with a RDH
You can get a Canadian Rx7 into the states with a letter from the manufacturer stating that it complies with US regs. Look up "Similar to US cars" on any Federal motor website.

Japan is a different story, dont want to get into it but, YES, you can get one here from japan.

Attachment 676904

started working on the interior. still needs a lot but good progress

need to find a flashlight for the pass kick panel

brother ordered a door cup pull for his lhd car. its really unfortunate that it didnt fit since i now have to use it on my car
Attachment 676906

got a dead pedal and knee pad in. also found a kick panel to fit and fixed a slightly floppy steering column
Attachment 676907

still need carpet, radio, a pillar plastic so i can get rid of these nasty gauges and of course clean.

crackerskid 04-02-13 12:20 AM

so today i started working on the vacuum mess. the car runs and drives great but doesnt have full boost. i didnt hook a gauge up but its probably around 3-5psi constant.

when i tore it down i found a couple broken solenoids, a lot of crispy vac lines and a broken nipple on the vac tank.

time to get to work

tried cleaning the block a little bit but there was a lot of corrosion in there. nobody will see it so i knocked off the big stuff and vacuumed it up followed by a quick degrease and rinse. its not much but at least some of the scale is gone. may do it again after i get my aluminum solvent stuff here.

oh and i actually have to put the block off plate kit on and run simp vac lines. ran out of daylight though.

stevensimon 04-09-13 09:48 PM

finally got around to putting the car back together.

first run on a full 10 psi
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d5...409_195727.jpg

feels decent enough.

Fas7tom 04-10-13 12:46 AM

Very nice !

stevensimon 04-10-13 12:47 PM

lighting on this car has been an issue. decided to work on the tail lights.

problems:
right side harness missing
left side brake lights dont light up

replaced right side harness and it made the car go hot. fuel pump, ecu everything now had power as if the key was on. in addition to the tail lights being stuck on.

turns out someone spliced wires and added a relay for an unknown reason. also found a few severely corroded pins.

removed relay. repaired wiring. replaced pins.

works correctly.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...70051746_n.jpg

next is headlights. a bit more complex
both headlights turn on when switched but only one goes up. and when the switch is turned off, the light does not go back down. i havent dug in to this yet but it is slated to be my project for this weekend.

fcrotory 04-10-13 12:57 PM

Nice car and nice work. Looking good.

i washed it and mounted the bumper more securely
Attachment 675735

also hooked up my hks bov but im not sure if its working. its really quiet and i cant really distinguish it from the turbo spool? tightened it down and didnt really change anything. also was afraid of overboosting so i hooked a gauge up. turns out im really only at 6psi. back to work i guess.

That's great progress for one month. Ive had my car for three and still haven't driven it.

stevensimon 04-24-13 08:10 PM

well..
i blew it up

i went non seq for engine bay tidiness. completely happy at the 10psi but with the new setup it was only getting 7. put on the stock green solenoids and plumbed them in. thought it was right. went around the block. boost spiked well above 15psi. i let off but it was too late. sound is off, heard detonation and boost gauge is bouncing ever so slightly. hoping its just cracked or chipped or something but im sure ill need a new housing now..

RCCAZ 1 04-24-13 11:49 PM

^^Sorry to hear that! Get her back up and running quickly. Nice weather is just around the corner.

stevensimon 06-12-13 12:08 PM

pulled compression test
90-80-80f
90-50-50r

could be worse. ill have her back up and running better than before while its still warm out.

stevensimon 09-25-13 03:00 PM

sometimes just a boring cruise around the block is fun

til this happens

i am missing all 4 pins. does anybody have some theyd like to sell/send to me?

Gringo Grande 09-25-13 03:08 PM

Hey Steve!

I ordered this kit from amazon: Beck Arnley 084-1316 Disc Brake Hardware Kit about a year ago for <$13.00 and it came with the pins

MaczPayne 09-25-13 03:15 PM

Nothing but good times for you, ain't it? :)

stevensimon 09-25-13 03:29 PM

i live the best i can.

thanks big white. ill order it now

RogueFab 09-26-13 01:38 PM

Looks like a keeper to me. Pretty well together for a "several kids modded this thing as much as they could" kind of car. Sorry to hear about the kaboom, you have the right attitude about it though.

Brake hardware kit arrived today.. pins were too short to pass all the way through the calipers. Double checked part numbers and it says they're correct. Kind of bummed but it does look good cleaned up a bit
Attachment 660093

RogueFab 10-02-13 04:19 PM

I would take those flat head phiilips screws off the brake rotor and throw them away. I have heard they are to hold the rotor on while the car is being assembled. They rust on sometimes, and the hub/wheel do a fine job of locating the rotor for me.

stevensimon 10-17-13 01:20 AM

Ray at malloy hooked me up with the correct pins so brakes are back to being safe instead of the opposite of safe.

Also, a few calls found a complete bose system including door speakers. We couldn't find the carpet though.. and finally, I got some stock engine bay plastic like the battery box. Still need to find the lid.

Ill post pics later

Gringo Grande 10-17-13 12:34 PM

Steve-

I'm so sorry I just checked with the guy who rebuilt my brakes for me and he said he forget to tell me the pins were short and he just used others.

Since you bought those on my incorrect info I'm happy to paypal you the cost of them...I feel pretty bad.

stevensimon 10-17-13 01:00 PM

thanks man. its not a big deal.
i dont blame you at all.
