I have used SEMs brand paint in their "Landau Black" color in the past for painting interior plastics. After drying, the color/finish/appearance is close to factory. The most important step is the prep work and cleaning, as years of ArmorAll and other protectants have built up into the plastics.
Aside from SEM Soap, did you use anything else to prep and "strip"? Any "primer" stages? When you say it's close to factory is it lighter, darker, more glossy, less glossy? What's missing that it doesn't quite look factory? Thanks! Nick |

so i got a pretty big update. through a series of pretty major set backs :( i have rebounded and got back on track.
the motor is all painted and looking good. oddly enough i didnt take any pictures of the finished product. not sure why. i probably meant to but just didnt. i put it back on the engine stand and got to putting it back together. the oil pan was cleaned and resealed. i used pematex ultra black for the record. i used an oil pan brace of course. im not sure what brand it is but its doing its job. i used a brand new gasket for the oil pick up as well. i got the IRP motor mounts street compound but didnt get a picture of them on the stand. Attachment 613820 Attachment 613821 after the oil pan, the next step was to lay the harness so i know how i am going to wrap it. i pulled all the dead wires out and depinned then from the plugs so there are no dead wires in this harness. then i put the intake manifold, turbo, main pulley, fuel rail, oil filter pedestal and the fitting for the oil cooler kit. the body shop "finished" the car on the 24th. the color i went with is soul red. its the same color that the new miata comes in. not sure what happened but the paint and everything is incomplete. theres still a bit left to do for them. i went ahead and took the car anyway. they said that once i finish putting it back together to bring it back and they will finish it. kind of strange but its whatever, i agreed. im not making it to DGRR anyway so i guess it doesnt really matter. just to note, the windshield broke when they called safelite out to pull it so i have a new windshield now . i asked them to black the trunk area since i think thats cool to do. its the same as i did on my integra. its just something i like =\

i got to working and didnt take many pictures. fuel rail with the injectors installed. i got the o ring lube from injector rx and they just slid right in.
Attachment 613798 russell pro classic 2 hose with single band clamps. these have no perforations in them so they dont dig into the hose. Attachment 613799 Attachment 613800 harness routed and heat wrapped Attachment 613801 harness installed, power steering pump installed, abs delete installed, ac line heat wrapped, heater hard line installed, clutch slave installed. the compressor housing wont be installed until the transmission is so i can clock it with the engine at the proper angle. the water pump housing is also temp installed since i still have to paint it. i got the air pump "ear" shaved down and the water pipe on top welded shut. Attachment 613802 Attachment 613803 new spark plugs. i just replaced what was already in there Attachment 613804 side shot of the turbo side. i painted the manifold flange with the same high temp silver as the block. im using DEI titanium heat wrap with actual cable ties since worm clamps were being used before. i replaced the barbed water line fitting with AN fittings. i will be using silicone line for the coolant feed and return since the rubber doesnt hold up and i want to use ss. the silicone line i will be using is designed for coolant so its going to last a good long while with the heat and everything. Attachment 613805 the front harness has be repositioned above the frame rail so that chaffing will not be an issue with the wheels or anything. i noticed there was a sharp corner that had started to dig into the harness so i covered it with this teflon anti chaff stuff i had. the crash sensor harness has also been routed under the fender as well. as of today this is what it looks like. ac line is routed and protected in chaff areas, fuse boxes are where they are going to be once i make some brackets for them, boost solenoid is mounted where it will be, overflow and washer bottles are installed, intercooler installed, ac condenser installed, plug wires on (pending coil pack relocation), oil filter sandwich plate installed for oil temp and pressure gauges, tunnel heat shield installed, brake booster vacuum pipe installed, right fender liner and fender installed, oil coolers installed and waiting on the thermostat to be mounted somewhere so that fittings can be chosen and lines made. i would say progress is going well. it will be 1 week tomorrow and this is all that has been done. the driver side cooler isnt all the way mounted yet which is why it looks different.

nice work, still plan on taking this to DGRR?
|
No. The car wont be ready in time. I thought I could make it but the body shop took longer than projected.
This weekend im expecting to finish the engine bay. I have a bit of fab work to do with mounting the fuse boxes and prop valve for the abs delete. The downpipe and radiator will be in work soon with a friend of mine. I need to get the bung for the wideband welded in and the upper neck on the radiator I need turned 90 degrees to work better with the new filler neck. I will have a good bit of pictures and stuff to update with over the next couple days. |
11 Attachment(s)
today was a very productive day. i did all the fab stuff i was going to do and it went pretty well considering my tool selection of a small set of drill bits, a dremel and my hands. the goal fro the day was to make all the mounts/brackets for all the parts that needed mounting along with a few other little things. first thing i did was reconnect the power steering. i was on the fence about deleting the power steering cooler or replacing it with some that wasnt so obtrusive. the end result was cutting out one of the loops and using it to reconnect the two lines. i think this was the best compromise for what i wanted: less clutter. the picture pretty much explains what i did. it ended up pretty well i think.
Attachment 613522 Attachment 613523 Attachment 613524 next was to do the coolant lines for the turbo. i got the -6 silicone line from a local shop. Attachment 613525 Attachment 613526 after, i went to work on the prop valve. what i did initially was zip tie it to the ac line. it was secure but i wasnt really happy with it. the original plan was to make and L bracket and mount to the master cylinder but then i got the idea to reuse the crazy U bracket from the ABS stuff. not sure what metal it is but if you bend it back forth, it will break very easily. i broke off the arm that holds the plug that goes into the brake reservoir and drilled the little hole bigger to accept a bolt. i also smoothed the sharp and rough edges. of course the hardware being used now is temporary. i will replace it with something a little more attractive later on. Attachment 613527 Attachment 613528 Attachment 613529 Attachment 613530 Attachment 613531 the biggest job of the day was the coil pack relocation. it was a daunting task since i was going to have to figure out a way to put them somewhere practical. unlike my other fd where i mounted them inside the car , i had to find somewhere in the engine bay that they would fit. a lot of the coil pack relocations i saw involved going with the AEM units or some other aftermarket option. one of the relocations i saw included a bracket that mounted to where the AC/PS goes. obviously not an option. another mounted them on the frame between the booster and the fender. that area is a little crowded on my car. so where they are now was the next best solution. the end result was this 2pc bracket. i went through a couple design changes in the course of making this so this is the end product. i will be getting the pieces welded together. of course the relocation was by no means necessary but why the hell not :egrin: Attachment 613532 |

Attachment 613511
Attachment 613512 Attachment 613513 Attachment 613514 Attachment 613515 Attachment 613516 after, the fuse boxes. the brace that goes to the smaller fuse box came of pretty good i think. nice and sturdy and holds the fuse box at an accessible angle. the bracket i made for the larger fuse box im not happy with. in my hand it felt very rigid and useful but when i mounted it, its all flimsy and dumb. as thin as it is, the metal im using is thick. i figured it would be fine but i was wrong. i will be remaking it :( Attachment 613517 Attachment 613518 Attachment 613519 Attachment 613520 Attachment 613521 |

Attachment 613503
Attachment 613504 Attachment 613505 next was the cage i wanted to make for the thermostat. running through all the options in my head, a cage was the best way to do this. mounting the thermostat where im mounting is to cut down on the clutter between the engine and radiator. mounting it under the frame like i am leave me with only 2 oil lines in the engine bay and both of them terminate under the frame so very little will be seen. the cooler to cooler and cooler to thermostat line will be routed in front of the car under the bumper re-bar. i will need to get this welded as well. the design is one part that goes around like a belt and he other part is a J. i finally cleaned and painted the water pump housing. i have been putting this for months. literally months. im just happy its done. this was a pretty big part of the engine bay since so many things go to it.
Attachment 613494 Attachment 613495 since the water pump housing was installed, i was able to fully install the water lines for the turbo and fully install the compressor housing. i put the new blanket on to replace that 30$ crap ebay blanket that was on there before. i went with blue because i liked the shade. even though the water lines are silicone, i went ahead and put the DEI heat sheath on them anyway. i intended to use it on the russell hose when i thought i was going to use it for the water lines. i didnt want the purchase to go to waste. Attachment 613496 Attachment 613497 Attachment 613498 i went ahead and installed the thermostat with a brand new gasket and put the filler neck on. its a moroso neck that has been welded to the flange from a stock filler neck. instead of buying the flange from banzai for crazy $$$, i asked the welder the scavenge the flange from the stock neck and weld it on. it worked out well. it was a perfect fit. i was able to move the cap from the old AST over and it saved me from having to buy a new cap :icon_tup: Attachment 613499 Attachment 613500 so this is how the bay sits as of tonight. oil neck installed with a new o-ring and uim/tb fully installed with a new lim-uim gasket. tomorrow i will be finishing up the charge harness. i am on the fence about getting the upgraded alternator from IRP so i havent put any time into the one i have now yet. it needs a very good cleaning and paint. the power steering pulled broke in half when i was removing forcing me to buy a whole pulley kit. you know how that goes  i will be dropping off the radiator and downpipe tomorrow to be welded for a wideband bung and neck rotation respectively. with the new filler neck, the neck on the radiator pointing down isnt very efficient. i am getting it cut off and turned 90 degrees. once i get it back then i can bolt down the ac drier, install the filter and charge pipe on the turbo and few other things. Attachment 613501 Attachment 613502 |
Looking good!
Too bad you won't be ready for DGRR - well, you DO have about 2 weeks, so who knows? :) If nothing else, come up Saturday in the daily driver to the car show at the lodge. See everyone's cars, meet people, and get some ideas and inspiration for your car. I'll be the REALLY tall guy there (6'6") Dale |
I'm assuming you moved the coils to get it away from the heat?
Why the change in coolant filler neck? |
Amazing! To bad it won't be ready for the DGRR. Cool work however!

Since you're so close, I would just drive over for the Saturday car show. Meet everybody, see the cars, say hi. You don't have to take the old Integra on the dragon :).
Trust me - I did a "next year, next year" for quite some time, and when I finally went I kicked myself for not going sooner. I would show up in a rental Buick if I had to. Dale |

Yeah! Show up. Perhaps, without a car you will be inclined to catch more rides in peoples 7s and get an idea of what you like and don't like, see new parts and get new ideas and inspiration to finish your project. |

sorry everyone but the video below explains whats been going on

https://www.rx7club.com/power-fc-for...times-1104883/ so.... the above threads are what ive been dealing with for the past few months. i have reached a point where i am calling it quits and taking my "win" and progressing. this weekend i will be finishing the interior and depending on how the weather is, will be posting a bunch of pictures of the outside now that the body is fully assembled other than the diffuser. |

correction to the above link. i meant that one and not the one with the clusters
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...h-5th-1101940/ any how.... the thread will now continue with activities. theres a lot to cover from the past few months. i'll try and keep it in order the best i can. so... picking up where we left off with the downpipe and radiator, i got the bung welded on and wrapped it in DEI titanium wrap along with spraying some high temp sliver paint on the welds. they were looking a little crusty so i hit them with a wire wheel and then painted them. this was my first time handling heat wrap and doing it by yourself is hard. you really do need a second set of hands. i also had to replace the clamp since the original one broke when i was removing the nut. Attachment 609006 Attachment 609007 Attachment 609008 Attachment 609009 Attachment 609010 the radiator mod went very well. getting the neck turned 90 degrees was perfect with everything. dropped right in with no alignment issue. i was able to take the stock upper hose and cut the end off it and it worked out. i chose to do it this way since previously the upper hose and the intake filter were resting on each other. this also had to be done since im using a "custom" filler neck that points forward instead of down. Attachment 609011 Attachment 609012 Attachment 609013 just the same as the engine harness, the charge harness got opened up and re situated. there wasnt anything wrong with it, i just wanted to put the fuse boxes in a different location. all i had to do was de loom it and re loom it the way i wanted. no modification of the wires needed. pretty sure i am going to redo it. it came out alright and isnt any more or less obtrusive that the stock config but it looks a little sloppy installed. Attachment 609014 |

next, the thermostat for the oil cooler. this was a little tricky since the whole point of going with these coolers was to unclutter the bay with the factory oil lines. i wanted the thermostat to be somewhere out of the way and the frame rail seemed like the best place. i showed the bracket in work earlier in the thread but this is the finished product. i was a little worried about putting it here because the location is a little flimsy. with it being so close to the ground and the wheel being right there but after checking around and looking at stuff, this spot is actually pretty good. its somewhere the wheel will never go under any circumstance other than a collision, the undertray im using sits lower than it so its protected from road debris and all that. the cage holds it sturdy and with the lines attached, it doesnt go anywhere.
Attachment 608996 Attachment 608997 Attachment 608998 Attachment 608999 Attachment 609000 once that was all sorted, i got to work fitting the wheels. i had 3 pairs in 3 sizes: 17x9+30/9.5+15/9.5+30. i had to figure out which two were going to work the best fitment wise. i ended up with a 9+30/9.5+15 square 255/40. the wheels are origin dna01. Attachment 609001 Attachment 609002 Attachment 609003 then it went off back to the body shop to be......."finished". basically what happened is they painted the car and gave it back to me. all of the post paint work still needed to be done: wetsanding, polsihing, all that stuff. in addition to that, the skirts needed to be put on and the whole front end installed and aligned. i'll come back to this in a little bit.... Attachment 609004 this is what the bay looked like when it left for the body shop. at this point i was waiting on the lines for the oil coolers to be made by tuning4life here on the forum so i couldnt install the pretty much the whole left side of the engine bay since i needed to route the line from the oil filter. Attachment 609005 |

so a few weeks later i get it back and to work i got on it. the engine bay was as far as i could get it without the oil lines so i got to messing with the interior. first, i had to deal with the radio harness. it was completely hacked. the factory plugs were gone and it was just wire ends. i ordered new plugs and got to soldering to get it back to normal. for whatever reason i didnt get pictures of the harness repaired but believe that it was beautiful.
Attachment 608985 Attachment 608986 after getting the radio harness sorted, next thing was to work on the speaker wires in the rear. fortunately the brackets were already there but the speakers were not and the wires were cut as well. i got new terminals on those and installed a set of oem honda speakers in the back because gathers is jdm yo. once i got working on doing all sorts of wiring fixes and routing on the inside, my work space got to be a little messy but it was organized.... to me anyway. Attachment 608987 Attachment 608988 the next big task was installing all the extra accessories: gauges, the navigation and the new antenna for the radio. the kenwood double din im using has attachments for a garmin based gps unit. i found one on ebay coupled with a "non working unit" for super cheap and jumped on the deal. come to find out that the issue was just a real poorly put together wire harness. got another one and all was well. i opted to mount the gps box under the main armrest thing all the way in the back. its attached with some velcro to the carpet so it doesnt bounce around. and i put the antenna for it just in front of the rear view mirror with the wire tucked into the headliner. the double din has options for a rear view camera as well. i ran the wire for it to the rear and left it there just in case down the line i get froggy and want to install that. since i got the stock antenna shaved, i went with one of those hidden amplified antennas that no one is really sure of and it works very well. this is the one i went with Metra Part # 44-UA20 | Aftermarket Antenna | Metra Online i didnt choose it for any specific reason honestly. theres 100s of options for antennas like this and i just didnt know what to pick. i just went with the name brand one that wasnt too cheap or too expensive and ended up with this one. it works very well. Attachment 608989 Attachment 608990 Attachment 608991 Attachment 608992 after getting all the wiring behind the ac panel sorted, the panel could be installed. pretty happy with the end product. Attachment 608993 Attachment 608994 then with everything done on the passenger side footwell, theres no reason to have it all apart. got that all assembled and looking good. my glove box had broken internally so i had to take it apart and use some epoxy to reattach the latch mechanism. unfortunately i didnt take any pictures. but once you get it apart, its clear what needs to be done for it to be repaired. Attachment 608995 |
9 Attachment(s)
i did the fuel pump rewire but ended up undoing it. i left all the attachments in the trunk and the wire on the battery so it can be reattached in a few minutes. i undid because at the time i was having a really nasty flooding issue and i thought some how the two were connected.
Attachment 608976 Attachment 608977 Attachment 608978 taking a break from the inside since there were quite a few panels i still hadnt restored yet. i got as far as i could. one of the bigger jobs i had to do was bleed the brakes and slave. i got myself a mightyvac and the whole bleed process was super simple. greatest tool ever made. Attachment 608979 Attachment 608980 Attachment 608981 by this time i also received the oil lines for the coolers. i was able to put the right side of the bay back together. the coil pack bracket thing worked out great. the one thing i didnt like was that it was only mounted on one corner with all the weight of the coil packs kind of making it pivot on the other end. oddly enough, it worked out. with the mount bolt tight, the assembly didnt move. in this location and orientation, the stock length wires reached all 3 with more than enough slack. the coil packs have since been put back in the stock location. part of my troubleshooting lead me to believe i was having spark issues from a poor ground through the bracket.... which ended up not being the case. Attachment 608982 Attachment 608983 that night, this was my engine bay. the tensioner for the ac/ps broke so i had to deal with that. Attachment 608984 |
10 Attachment(s)
moving forward, i got into gear and got to work on the interior panels and did the rear bins since everything mounts on top of that. that allowed me to position the battery and the power cable. i also did the rear trunk side panels and just got the trunk squared away.
Attachment 608966 Attachment 608967 Attachment 608968 some time later during troubleshooting i replaced the fuel pump with a denso tt supra pump. i was saving it for my blue fd but i needed to use it now =( Attachment 608969 Attachment 608970 at this point, the trunk was together and the car was running well enough to say its running and i had been troubleshooting for a while. this was the point where i made that video. more time passes and my trip to okinawa is approaching. the car needed to go BACK to the body shop for more finishings and to get the front installed and aligned. so i dropped it off there so while i was gone they would work on and when i got back i would pick it up. that was plan but thats not how it went. to summarize, insurance work takes priority. so much so, that it took 8 weeks to get a front bumper installed. explain that shit. Attachment 608971 anyway, i went to japan to get my blue fd ( https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...ility-1048550/ )ready to be shipped home next year. overall the trip was great. it was sad since i should have never left to begin with but whatever.... life goes on. due to some great friends, my car is ready to come on over. it will be on a boat in december to go to mainland japan then shortly after, another boat headed to america. also on my trip i had to deal with my old 99 ( https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...japan-1079708/ ). the person i sold it blew the motor. long story short, i bought it back and parted it out. i kept all the parts of course but still..... i had to tear it apart. Attachment 608972 Attachment 608973 Attachment 608974 Attachment 608975 |

so that was over and done with. back in america after and time to get back to work. i had to wait 3 weeks for them to finish my car at the body shop since when i got back and checked in, the car hadnt been touched the whole time i was gone. it got pushed into a corner and forgotten. fast forward and i have it back with the bumper and everything on. then i really buckled down and put the interior back together since i was getting tired of the months of trouble shooting and getting no where. i had to move on. keep in mind up to this point the inside was only put together in the trunk and the rear bins. the interior is basically done. i managed to break my cluster so i cant put that whole section of the dash on yet.
Attachment 608954 Attachment 608955 Attachment 608956 Attachment 608957 Attachment 608958 moving on to the outside, this is how the car looks now. Looks great! For the heat wrap, did you soak it in water first? Makes it much easier to wrap, and tighten up more once it is dry.
|
thanks man... no i didnt soak it first. i thought about it since ive heard of people doing that but i really didnt want to deal with all that water. the dei wrap was pretty easy to handle. it was like handling a scarf made of........... wool(?) or something like that. really easy to handle....

Selling your car?

yes... this red one will be for sale after its all the way sorted.

spent a while in the garage today. i got majority of the odds and ends done. there are a couple super minor things left and i'll get to them at some point but theyre not incredibly important. i got the fuel filter changed most important. luckily the previous owner relocated it and swapped the clamps out. this job took all of 5 minutes.
Attachment 608895 Attachment 608896 i got the belts and the tensioner pulley on. the belt i was using with the alternator was a 4 rib instead of 5 rib. i was having a hard time finding a 5 rib in the correct length for these pulleys but thats all figured out now. same situation with the ac/ps belt. Attachment 608897 the coil packs are finally mounted permanently. ive had them just sort of hanging out for some time now. i found these super cool plug wires with an additional ground wire on them. only 2 of them have it so i decided to put them on the leadings. with that, my engine bay is fully assembled. only thing left now is a lot of cleaning.... a lot. i got the fender liners on too but didnt get any pictures. Attachment 608898 Attachment 608899 Attachment 608900 i just wanted to show how cool this bumper is with the ducting. with the mocal 19 row coolers the duct sits perfect on them as if they were designed together. Attachment 608901 Attachment 608902 im gonna wash the car tomorrow and take a few more pictures of everything. the plan is to get it back to the body shop monday so that they can finally finish it and i can be happy. :egrin: now that the car is as sorted as its gonna be, theres nothing more i can do to it until i get my other cluster and get to florida. so honestly, the body shop is in a position to take their time although i wish they wouldnt. one thing that i noticed that i need to figure out is why the power fc isnt registering speed. it just stays at 0. hopefully the sensor didnt go bad. i checked the plugs and the sensor itself but i am going to go searching to see if maybe theres a fuse or something that would cause no speed input. |
Looks nice.
Probably gonna wanna run some wider tires in the back. Shouldn't run square tires on staggered wheels. Sidewall stretch. Blah blah. |
2 Attachment(s)
yea... i understand. the tire fills the wheel out just fine really. also, these tires were on the wheels when i bought them.
i took the car to the alignment rack on monday. pretty cool watching them get the car onto the rack especially with the twin plate. they did a good job with everything. i didnt request any specific numbers for the alignment. this is a street car so any kind of "performance" specs would be pretty useless. i also dropped the car back off at the body shop yesterday for the 4th time. something ive never heard before was that the finishing steps of the paint job was an "extra service". i asked what steps were taken after a car is taken out the of paint booth and was told...... nothing. they went on to explain that buffing and all that is only done if its requested ahead of time and of course paid for. they agreed to do it anyway. is that something that anyone else has ever heard of? Attachment 608831 Attachment 608832 |
Pretty common for most body shops in my opinion. Only the really high end shops will include color sanding etc
|
hmmm.... interesting. i assumed it was part of the process. i guess ive been spoiled in japan.

so a its been a while, a little bit has happened since the last update. i dont remember everything but i'll cover what i can recall.
in a series of modifications, i ended up with a plug and play ignition amp that isnt a twin power. other models exist... go figure. it works great. it leaned out my idle quite a bit and driving it so much more smooth now. night and day difference. im also very proud of myself for the super sleek install as well. pat myself on the back for this one... then the street tune happened in va at angel motorsports. it was a lot of back and forth on that road. the car ran great afterwards. i later went back to finish up on the dyno and a little more tuning on the street to get it just right. Facebook Post then it was a whole lot of nothing going on. jan 17 we went back to va to get on the dyno and put down 350 to the wheels maxing out the injectors. we used the dyno at a shop called ramey built if you ever heard of it. i have no explanation for the graph. the tq number is obviously incorrect. they were saying something about the dyno being set up for something else... idk. either way its wrong. the hp number is correct though. so the 17th we went to the dyno and the 19th we moved from north carolina to florida. i wasnt going to drive the fd back i so got it trailed. it only took 2 days to get to me. unfortunately, it was damaged while being loaded. i wasnt mad about it. i left the car with a friend of mine and he wasnt really up to the twin plate. i was going to get the bumper repainted when it arrived anyway so... nothing to really be upset about. the pictures make the damage look worse than it really was.
Attachment 604417 Attachment 604418 Attachment 604419 Attachment 604420 Attachment 604421 Attachment 604422 getting that repaired was no big deal. i went with a black for the front "lip" of the bumper and it makes a world of difference. i didnt realize just how much red was on the car until this happened. i think theres a much better balance now. theres a small one man shop in orlando called justins custom auto. the guy (justin) is super cool and does outstanding work. hes my body man moving forward for the rest of forever. he also hooked it up with the diffuser install. he lined it up for me and made an outline so all i had to do was drill the holes. i was worried about doing it myself for fear of making it uneven. the goal was to install the diffuser and trim slits in the stock rear lip thing for the diffuser to sit in. well i messed that up big time. it looks terrible. im on the hunt for another so i can try again. Facebook Post Attachment 604424 Attachment 604425 Attachment 604426 Attachment 604427 Attachment 604428 and thats basically it.... not much has really been going on with this car. ive just been driving it around and enjoying it. ive fixed a few little things that ive been putting off and will be deleting power steering and upgrading the brakes soon. now that my other one has arrived, this car is going to be taking a back seat to life for quite some time. which is ok. i think it needs a break. |
The car looks great dude! Where in Florida did you move to??
