1993 CYM R1 Street/Track/Time Attack Build

I started my love with Rx-7's when I turned 16 and picked up a 1981 that was in some bad shape. I rebuilt that car from the ground up to road race, but after joining the military I had to get rid of my FB. I knew I would get another and I knew I wanted a FD next time around. Seven years later and now 25 I found one! I picked her up in June from my buddy Rich. Fresh paint with no engine or transmission. I'm a little over a month out from my deployment being over, so I'm starting my build thread now to tie up any loose ends before I get back. I'm planning to build a streetable track/time attack car with full interior. I've been ordering parts since july and here is what I have so far.

My plan was to go Non-seq but after researching for months I'm going single instead. Looking for opinions on what turbo and port to go with. Thanks for looking!

I ordered a PT6266 today with a HKS manifold 50mm wastegate, and downpipe. I'm excited to try this puppy out!

theorie 01-12-12 07:52 PM

Awesome. I've always wanted a CYM myself. Looking forward to the build. Good luck!

RigoFD 01-12-12 08:16 PM

Nice car, looking forward to your completed build.

shetlen 01-15-12 06:16 AM

I orginally wanted a SSM or BB. This CYM has grown on me though. Plus with black accents it will pop!

turbodrx7 01-15-12 07:51 AM

Looks like it might be a Mazdaspeed hood chillin in the background there? Or a Knightsport?

-Austin

rx7rcer09 01-15-12 09:17 AM

is it a real CYM? im noticing the tan seat or is it just in there because it came with the shell.

shetlen 01-15-12 05:15 PM

It's original CYM. The seats were swapped out for a MB Rx-7 before i bought it. I'll get the black back in there, It might not be stock though lol. The engine bay is the original color, but the outside body is CYM with metallic mixed in! It looks amazing! The difference in original color and stock is just beautiful. I'm not sure what what hood it is. its fiberglass and I'll be replacing it here soon.

Narfle 01-15-12 05:38 PM

For time attack & street? You could go with anything from stock ports to an aggressive street port.

I probably wouldn't bridge it. But, that's just me.

shetlen 01-15-12 06:44 PM

I'm going to stick with stock ports for the time being. I want to see what kind of numbers and times I can make with stock ports first.

Narfle 01-15-12 07:59 PM

That would have been my recommendation, but some people say cucumbers taste better pickled.

shetlen 02-06-12 09:39 PM

Well I'm a week out from getting back to the states and getting this project started. I've been online researching like a mad man and always seem to end up on one of Howard Coleman's threads lol. I went with his suggestion of the Tein S Tech Springs (Front 436 Lbs/in Rear 324 Lbs/in 1.5in drop) and I'll be ditching the R1 struts here soon as well. I am going to be looping the PS as to get rid of the pump and tossing the A/C with it. I also decided to try my hand at no blow off valve. This is what I bought here lately. I can't wait to get back and get started!

OEM Fuel filter
FC Data Logit w/USB
NGK BUR9EQP plugs x4
Innovate MTX-L Wideband
Apexi Power FC Boost Control Kit
Rx7store Extreme Fuel system with 1680cc sec Injectors

My need/want to buy list never seems to stop growing!!!!

New oil pan
E-shaft plug
Motor mounts
Grounding wire kit
Water/Meth Injection
Seibon CF DS hood w/ struts
Wideffot Racing Swaybar Mounts
Banzai - Oil Pan Brace and PPf Brace
Engine torque arm (David Garfinkle's)
Tanabe Swaybar 30% Front 37% Rear
Tune Trapper Antenna since mine is shaved

sittinSideways 02-08-12 05:35 PM

I love time attack builds, looking forward to some updates!

shetlen 02-20-12 11:21 AM

Finally back to the states and am in the process of building a better garage/shop before I can begin. If the rain will stop I can clear everything out. I'll give a better update with pic once the garage is in order lol.

adracer 02-22-12 08:53 PM

Welcome home, and thank you for doing what you do on your deployments.:icon_tup:

I'm looking forward to following your build adventure. In mapping out your build and accumulating parts, you've done exactly what I'm hoping to do when I get home. It will be fun to watch your car come together!

Where do you plan to track the car? VIR? Road Atlanta? Summit Point? Roebling Road? Barber? All of the above? Just trying to build the anticipation for you.

carolinacat 02-22-12 10:37 PM

Let me know if you wanna sell that hood. Im looking for a fiberglass one to chop up.

shetlen 02-22-12 11:21 PM

Thanks I appreciate it , it's good to be home.

VIR is my first choice as it is only 2.5 hours away.

Today I cleaned up most of the garage, enough to get to started tomorrow.

Juan 02-23-12 01:52 AM

Car and work bench booth look great :icon_tup: Not sure if you've made contact with Widefoot about their sway bar mounts but if you do, please let me know. I've tried, as have others, without luck.

technomentor 02-28-12 12:23 AM

I have a pair of the original version Widefoot sway bar mounts in my parts bins. Not as nice as the 2nd generation versions he developed. Wish I had bought a pair of those when he had them available.

Juan 03-07-12 10:38 PM

I also have some Widefoot mounts on my FD but tried to contact them because some customers ask me about sway bar mounts. The widefoot mounts are/were a great product :icon_tup:

turbojeff 03-08-12 12:47 AM

Nice build, I have a hood just like that for my CYM, keep debating if I should put it on.

shetlen 03-19-12 12:25 AM

Well I finally had this last week home and not TDY or sick. I went ahead and stripped the interior for cleaning and quitcoat, De-powered the steering, Installed the HID's, Stripped the harness of the tape and non needed wires, and Cleaned up a bunch of parts.

The power steering was pretty straight foward and didnt take long at all. I couldn't find bolts to plug the holes but Lowes had automotive plugs to cap off the tube bolts and I used a vacuum cap to plug the big bolt. I also welded up the quill shaft.

All the tubes taken off!
http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...7/CIMG2172.jpg
I went to Lowes and grabbed a few automotive plugs for the holes
http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...7/CIMG2178.jpg
Waiting for the mounts to soak and I'm finished
http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...7/CIMG2177.jpg

Next was the wiring harness. This was a pain in the ass to get the damn tape off. after that it was not bad seperating the wires from the harness. I'm not going to tape it back up until she runs and I know where I want to put everything.

Before removing any wires

Awesome pic lol! If you make this I want one!

muibubbles 03-19-12 01:21 AM

zomg. that rotor eating that piston is the coolest thing i ever seen...did u make it? if not where did u find it!?!?

shetlen 03-19-12 02:44 PM

I was searching for rotary and found it, google rotor eating piston lol, It should be there. Someone should build a few of these so I can have one!

Standing Z 03-20-12 05:16 PM

love this car! Keep up the good work!!

muibubbles 03-20-12 10:12 PM

haha i wonder who origianlly thought of it... where do you find a piston that small!

Ride_drz 03-21-12 12:48 AM

Got to have one of those piston eating rotor monsters haha

shetlen 03-21-12 01:13 AM

I could pull a piston that small out of my weedeater that is broke or any small engine repair shop should have a few busted ones. Well shit it looks like I might have to start building some of these lil guys! I wish I still had all those dam rotors from my FB.

Takumi Trueno 03-29-12 03:27 PM

CYM is the best color. Keep giving updates.

rx71220 04-04-12 10:45 AM

nice car and build had a yellow rx7 identical to that 1 and sold it about 6 yrs ago MISTAKE!!!

kyoo 04-13-12 04:51 PM

awesome, what year is the jdm motor from?

Flying_solo 04-23-12 02:00 PM

Gorgeous CYM man and thank you for your service. I just picked a CYM R1 up myself a few weeks ago and have begun some work. Mine will be a slower drawn out rebuild. I'll be following your progress!

shetlen 08-06-12 11:10 AM

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, after DGRR I got deployed for two months came home and went on leave for two weeks to see family. Went TDY shortly after getting back to work and now I'm on the road for another month, but before going on leave I dropped engine of to Rotorsports and picked her up shortly before leaving this time. So I have a brand new engine in the garage and will hopefully be able to get back to it once I get home!

shetlen 08-06-12 11:11 AM

The JDM is a 94

technomentor 09-29-13 11:30 PM

This build thread needs updates....

Well I haven't had much time home in the past two years, but it looks like I'm getting a break for a few months!!! Here is some of what I've done since my last post, not much but better than nothing!

Sub frame was stripped and repainted with high-temp paint and is installed with the manual steering rack.

My old brake lines were busted so I replace them with braided ones. does it really help.?.... probably not, but it looks good and they are new.

More updates to come!

So since my last post, I got busy! First I grabbed a cherry picked and put the engine in.

Attachment 636638
Attachment 636639
Then I ditched the JDM harness and grabbed the USD I had hanging out. This one was ten times easier to strip down, the tape rolled right off.
Attachment 636640
After stripping, I test fitted over and over till just right.
Attachment 636641
All finished and ready to go in!
Attachment 636642
Drilled and tapped a spot for my boost control kit valve and got her all hooked up.

Flying_solo 10-16-14 10:26 PM

Nice to see she's moving along, looking good!

ppritchard 10-23-14 06:05 PM

Very Nice!

The more pics the Better!

04G35S 10-24-14 11:11 AM

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the front port that you have plugged on your boost controller supposed to be vented to the atmosphere? Mine has a small filter on it.

shetlen 10-24-14 09:21 PM

From what i understand for single turbo operation, the NC and COM are connected and the NO is to the atmosphere. For twin operations the NC is open and the NO side is connected.

jacobcartmill 11-06-14 12:48 PM

shetlen, i would double check that. i've had that same boost control solenoid on several cars and i've never seen the vac lines hooked up like that. i can't visualize how the air has anywhere to vent with your vent port plugged like that.

can you post pics of the rest of the wastegate and vac lines setup?

+1 the center port does go to atmosphere. thats how its setup on my fd as well. I use a Eboost 2 instead.

shetlen 11-06-14 03:59 PM

It is vented, the plug has a hole in it. I'll check to see if it's fine there or I will just take it out. Thanks!

silver_7 11-07-14 09:07 AM

Im glad ur still working on her....very nice car. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build. Not sure if I missed it, but what was the reason you decided to go single vs staying with the twins?

gavbey 11-15-14 08:35 PM

thats cleeeeeeen

shetlen 11-15-14 10:55 PM

The reason for going single was to just accept the inevitable, knowing I would have wished to do it in the first place.

waz_05 12-09-14 08:33 AM

Very nice build man

Engine looks soo clean!! Do you know which set of wheels you gonna run yet?

shetlen 01-08-15 04:24 PM

6 Attachment(s)
Thanks guys! I do not know which wheels I'm going to run yet, probably the ones that are on there until I find a better set later on.

Well been busy TDY and home with the family as usual but I'm back in NC. I got in some CXracing coilovers due to all of mine being blown. I heard good things from them on other car forums so I will give them a shot.

Attachment 633023

Not sure why only the left fender well was painted and the right was not? Either way I will be putting truck bed roll on lining on both sides. bad thing is, it is hard to get my garage up to painting temps with the outside temp 18 degrees.

Attachment 633024

Attachment 633025

Caliper paint to match the car.

Attachment 633026

They were really dirty!

Attachment 633027

Just a cool pic I found! enjoy.

Attachment 633028

More to come here shortly!

shetlen 01-16-15 09:15 PM

Well I got the garage barely warm enough to roll on some truck bed lining and I will not do that again, it looks like crap with the brush strokes in it. When it gets warm enough I will get the spray on to finish it.

Attachment 632515

It may look good from far but not up close

http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...F3536E2565.jpg

All the brakes are off now! They will be yellow once the temps warm up.

Attachment 632516

These things are dirty, rebuild kits on the way!

http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...296CE8F4E2.jpg

Time for coilovers to go on! More to come.
