Banzai Racing 93 BB Touring Automatic Project

We picked up a 93 brilliant black with tan interior Automatic trans FD that was in need of an engine rebuild due to a failed coolant seal retaining wall. The car is in overall very good condition. The car came to us with a new trans and torque converter as well as 4.30 diff. It also had a full exhaust, intake and upgraded SMIC.

We will be updating this thread and the project page as the car evolves. Banzai Racing Automatic FD Engine Installation

http://www.banzai-racing.com/Project...ai_auto_fd.jpg

We have now rebuilt and ported the motor, installed a set of 96-98 turbos we had laying around, which we had ported the WG.

The 20B will be getting an external make over this winter so this car will be seeing a lot of hand me downs, like the 18" wheels, Koni shocks, eibach springs, etc.

GoodfellaFD3S 12-06-13 09:20 AM

Looks like the car is coming along nicely Chris :icon_tup:

What are your plans for this FD? street/auto-x, or....?

Banzai-Racing 12-06-13 09:34 AM

Right now we are just building a street car, keeping the A/C, PS and sequential twins. Going for something around 350rwhp, since we already have the high powered 20b FD and 13b-re Vert.

Banzai-Racing 12-07-13 06:10 AM

The 20B FD got new Apexi coil overs so the Automatic got the Koni Sports and Eibach springs

http://www.banzai-racing.com/Project...ks_springs.jpg

Also installed a new shifter Panel, since the original was looking really crappy and some new hatch shocks

http://www.banzai-racing.com/Project...fter_cover.jpg

IAN 12-07-13 06:39 AM

I have that Rotary Revolution poster (2005) in my garage. Biggest rotary even I remember. Alot of vendors, track day, drag, and show. To bad the weather was not very good.
Have fun with the build!

Banzai-Racing 12-11-13 10:42 AM

Installed the HP Design wheels, changed the whole look

Where can one find a new shifter panel? I am also looking for one, all the letters have discoloured.

Banzai-Racing 12-20-13 04:33 AM

Mazda still has them.

island fd 01-30-14 10:14 AM

I am seriously considering the 4.3 gears, however they are a bit of an investment. I know you said it makes a difference, but I was wondering how much? is it worth the money? Also does it get rid of that 2-3 second lag off the line?

Banzai-Racing 01-30-14 10:33 AM

Put in the cheaper 4.10 and see if you like that.

island fd 01-30-14 12:19 PM

was hoping to just do it once, parts are hard to come by here and everything is expensive to ship. So if it makes a good difference I'll go for it. Sorry to badger you about it, I just have no one else to get any sort of feedback from. By the way did you have a chance to dyno your auto build yet?

Banzai-Racing 01-30-14 12:33 PM

It makes a noticeable difference in acceleration from a dead stop. However if you do not have the basic power adder mods done already, I would do those first, then upgrade the LSD unit and the gears at the same time. It sounds like you are concerned about budget, so you do not want to install gears, then break the Torsen.

It is the middle of winter, we have basically 0 miles on the engine, dyno probably will not happen until late spring or next fall.

island fd 01-30-14 01:10 PM

Budget is a concern, but I need to spend right the first time if I can. I have your adapter harness, power fc, and oled commander I just got from you. Also running a re amemiya smic, apexi intake and will be installing new fuel pump and injectors. feed downpipe, bonez mid pipe and fujitsubo catback. I will be pulling the turbos to port the waste gate and upgrade vacuum lines. I've installed boost, wideband and water temp gauges, already upgraded tires and wheels, looking at gears lastly. I have a line on a diff from japan out of an RZ model with the 4.3 gears obviously installed, but about 3 hundred to ship.

Banzai-Racing 01-30-14 05:21 PM

I would just buy the ring and pinion

I'll take hand-me-downs like that any day

Johnny Kommavongsa 12-02-15 05:10 PM

Nice looking for ward to more updates.

Banzai-Racing 12-02-15 06:16 PM

We also had an efini y-pipe laying around, so that was installed.

Love that BB paint.

Banzai-Racing 12-08-15 12:38 PM

Installed a single 25 row oil cooler and Mocal Thermostat while the nose was off. Buttoned up the nose install, just in time to put it away for winter :(

Hey Banzai,

I'm trying to run the same SMIC (SR Motorsports) and koyo radiator (well, it's a clone, I think. previous owner put it in) that you have on this car, but having trouble with fitting both (bottom front edge of IC hits radiator fan motors.. got a thread about it in 3G section). Did you have to do anything special to get these to fit? Are you using the normal stock radiator mount positions? Did you use the stock IC mount brackets or did you have to fab something up? Any input would be super helpful! Thanks!!

Banzai-Racing 02-29-16 06:42 AM

No alterations of any kind

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...263da8d7b9.jpg

TrialTurbo 04-25-16 01:26 AM

Hi Banzai,

I noticed that there are extra coolant lines from the automatic transmission that go to the radiator, so what do you do with those when upgrading to a Koyo? Please let me know, my stock radiator started leaking so figured it was time to upgrade. Thanks.

Banzai-Racing 04-25-16 06:16 AM

We bypass the radiator and run the lines directly to the trans cooler.

rotaryextreme 05-02-16 03:58 PM

subd because Im getting an auto FD too. I'll be getting your brace parts.

Bosozoku theme....lol

Love this thread

Banzai-Racing 05-01-17 03:26 PM

The Banzai Racing Auto FD got some love today. Swapped out the Pulleys for one of our Black Aluminum Kits and installed a PFS SMIC.

That PFS SMIC looks brand new :icon_tup:

Banzai-Racing 05-02-17 06:07 AM

It is in very good condition, just what this car needed. The PFS has always been one of my favorite SMICs for it's looks.

Banzai-Racing 10-09-17 08:45 AM

Finally got enough miles on the engine to do some dyno tuning. 346rwhp/257tq @ 13.4psi max

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...09c9179b8e.jpg

Molotovman 10-10-17 07:01 AM

Whats up with the weird lines at around 7K RPM? How does it feel compared to a manual trans car when punching it from a roll? How many miles were put on this since the engine rebuild over 4 years ago to just tune it now?! :)

Banzai-Racing 10-10-17 08:07 AM

I think the trans was getting hot, causing a slight slip at 7K, and then is would recover. I see those marks on dyno sheets when the tires spin or the straps have come loose, neither of which were the case here.

It is completely different from a manual trans, not having the boost blow off when shifting makes for very solid shifts. Played around with the hold button a little on the street after tuning was done. The car also has a 4:30 rear, so acceleration is rapid from a roll. Basically is it a 350hp FD that Grandma can drive. Slow from a standing start.

The car only has about 600miles on it, I actually let a friend of mine drive it around for the last month just to get those miles on it. It is not a primary car or even one of my primary RX-7s. It is a side project and we are a very busy shop, so there are months (years) that this sat in the corner of the dyno building.

cib24 10-10-17 08:24 AM

The answer is probably no as the auto FD was never really a car people focused on, but can you install a higher stall speed torque converter? Isn't the stock stall speed like 3,000-3,200 RPM? If a 4,000-4,5000 RPM converter could be installed that would help a lot with launches wouldn't it? Maybe hurt drive-ability a touch though.

Banzai-Racing 10-10-17 08:28 AM

The torque converter is not rotary specific and can be modified to any stall speed.

cib24 10-10-17 08:36 AM

Cool. I didn't mean rotary specific, just transmission specific as it might not be a transmission that was used in any other car? Anyway, cool to know it would be possible to increase the stall speed and launch it harder if you really wanted to make it an attractive drag car.

Picked up a spare torque converter, sending it out to level 10 for some upgrades.

MILOS7 01-07-19 11:06 PM

nice

rotaryextreme 01-08-19 12:52 AM

Love the pioneer head unit, nice color match. I also have a level 10 auto trans sitting in storage waiting until I get an auto FD...lol

thanks for making this project auto rx7 !!!!!!!!!!!!

TwinCharged RX7 01-16-19 02:54 AM

Can you post any details on the L10 modifications?

Did you ever add an upgraded trans cooler?

Search Level 10 Transmission. I am having the TC upgraded to the bulletproof TC, basically the equivalent of an upgraded clutch. This should eliminate the little slip in the high end of the rpm range. Cooler is stock, have not had a reason to change it yet.

rotaryextreme 03-08-19 07:52 AM

Chris,

Did you ever get that TC upgraded?

Ben

Banzai-Racing 03-08-19 08:39 AM

It is in the works. Super busy working on customers' cars, which always happens. One of the reasons that I have put less than 1000 miles on this car since I have owned it.

Today, the car will be getting the first of a brand new product that we will be releasing next week. Stay tuned for a sneak peak.

Banzai-Racing 03-08-19 12:28 PM

I got tired of looking at the S4 plastic filler neck used for the AST elimination, so I sat down and designed a billet aluminum part. It has a removable nipple with 1/8 npt threads. We will be offering it as a kit with a new viton o-ring and stainless hardware.
