Bad transaction with andre sinclair

Bought a set of rotor housings from andre sinclair in this thread... https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...using-1050408/

The rear housing has flaking that is 3 inches long and was spoken of or even shown in the pictures for me to see.

The front housing doesn't pass the spec for heat warp. Andre specifies in the thread that the "housing's are good for a rebuild."

Furthermore, the pictures also didn't really show the extent to the cracking. There's a ton of stress that nearly extends the whole length across the leading support bridge for both housings. There is also trailing cracking.

I contacted Andre and told him about the situation. He wanted to negotiate a deal for the housings but the housings are unfortunately display items aka paper weights. I asked for a full refund, told him that I felt not responsible at all for the confusion asked him to cover the return shipping. His response to that was

"The housing were sold and shipped as is. Please disregard my previous PM message as no refund will be offered."

I replied giving him one more chance to work things out and I have not heard back from him since.

Don't trust his descriptions and expect him to not be accountable for his deceptive "easy to work with" front.

Here's pictures of the completely flaked off area on the one housing. It's very easy to spot...

FORUM CORRESPONDENCE

Andre, we got the housings but there's unfortunately a couple problems. The rear housing has flaking that is 3 inches long and the front housing doesn't pass the spec for heat warp.

Furthermore, the pictures also didn't really show the extent to the cracking. There's a ton of stress that nearly extends the whole length across the leading support bridge.

The housings are in reality shelf decorations. We really won't be able to justify resurfacing these housings and selling them. I'm not really sure if you were aware of all these details, so I'm just bringing it all to your attention right now. How should we proceed from here?

Sell me the shelf decorations for fiddy bucks please.

jamespond24 11-19-13 08:28 AM

Goopy seals would work with that housing or turn the apex seals the other way would work too.

^^^ Shhhh. I'm trying to get some good housings on the cheap. :D

RotaryResurrection 11-19-13 11:32 AM

I don't know man, that chrome flaking is minimal at worst IMO. I routinely use MUCH worse than that with great success. Asking for housings in better condition than that is basically asking for perfection. Finding housings in such condition is about a 1 in 100 shot, in my experience. Also IMO, as builders, it is our responsibility to have realistic expecations based on the experience of seeing hundreds of housings...and assume that what we are buying is not perfect or like new.

As far as warpage and other specs, it would be good to have all sellers of housings be engine builders and be able to accurately spec the housings, but that's not really realistic. The very reason we are able to buy these housings at low prices is BECAUSE they are being sold by people who are not engine builders. If you or I have a perfect condition set of housings that fully spec out for reuse, and we sell them to a buyer or put them into a customer engine, we are going to get top dollar for them...because we are builders and have inspected them, and will likely warranty them.

On the other hand, buying from Joe Blow here on the forum is always a risk. These people do not always know what they actually have it what condition it is REALLY in, and we as buyers can only tell so much from pics. But, that is part of buying used housings on the internet from random sellers. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. You can't necessarily turn around and blame the seller for minor issues that you later find and they were 1) not aware of due to lack of experience or 2) unable to check for. Unless there are glaring discrepancies, I chalk it up to the risk we take by buying online...and that's why I always try to negotiate the price as low as possible, to help cover for the very real possibility that the parts have hidden issues that won't come to light until I do a builder-level inspection on them.

IF all sellers of used engine internals were builders and could fully and thoroughly inspect parts for perfection, there would be no used parts on the market that we could afford.
