300ZX Z32 brakes on an FC

Does anybody know what's involved in getting to 300zx brakes on the front of the FC? I know some Japanese tuners have done this but I'm not too sure how extensive it is to modify them to fit.

Seems like a very worthwhile brake upgrade for the price if not too much modification/fabrication is required.

I know that the FEED FC has these installed.

I want to get them also. I once saw a fd at alex lopez shop that had porsche brakes on it.. ITs nasty looking, I wonder how much fabrication it takes to get them on.

The 300ZX brake rotors would be a little easier to get on, as the 300ZX shares the RX-7's bolt pattern. Porsches have 5x130 I believe, whereas we have 5x114.3, so there would be significantly more fabrication involved. I believe I read somewhere that the 300ZXTT brake upgrade was popular among rx7s, and that it simply involved fabricating new brackets for brake lines, and a few other minor things, but I could be wrong. It certainly would be cheaper to do this upgrade than it would be to buy a big brake kit.

But then again, ask yourself what you're trying to achieve with your car. If you're on the track a lot and you've noticed serious problems with brake fade, even with upgraded pads/rotors, then this would be a good mod to perform (it would be like the 1st gen guys swapping in the "big brakes" from FCs - brakes meant for a much heavier car in a very light chassis). If you want to fill up yo 18'z mad fatt yo so u kan get da laydeez at da impoat kar shoewz, I guess you could do it to fill up your wheels a bit more (make sure to file off the NISSAN stenciling on the calipers, though, and paint the calipers neon green while you're at it). But, if you drive the car every day and just want better braking power, this may not be the most benificial thing to do. The 300ZXTT brake system is heavier, and also may not even imrove your stopping distances much more than upgrading your pads and rotors on your existing brake setup.

Although neither of us have any evidence as to whether or not they will improve braking distance I am confident that companies such as FEED have made the Z32 brakes work on the FC rather than going with a BBK. I mean for the price of a set of Z32 brakes, which I recall being about $400 or so (rotors and calipers) it isnt that bad. If I cant get them to work oh well I'll just sell them to someone with a 240. If I count what I could sell my brake parts for it seems like an even better investment.

We're working on a kit for putting the 99spec brakes on the front of the FC to go along with our rear brake upgrade. It's a much bigger rotor than the FC. Plus it isn't going to cost a ton. It's the same upgrade FEED did on their FC.

I know you guys are making a 99 spec upgrade but how much is it gonna cost rougly? Also the FEED FC I have seen definately has 300zx brakes and not 99 specs. I can tell because of the big glaring Nissan stenceling. The Option 2 vid I have actually had an entire section on that FC and they spent a few minutes talking about the brakes but it wasnt subbed and I dont know japanese. But then again I'm sure FEED has more than one FC.

btw, weight wise the rx7 is more similar to a 240sx then a 300zx

as a result, you guys might want to go with the stock brake setup on japanese silvia K's.

300zx z32 30mm front brakes
240sx s14 stock rear brakes
15/16 master cylinder

what's wrong with our brakes? those don't seem much better, certainly not enough to justify the work.

Nothing is wrong with our brakes. I just want more braking power. As said above the FC and 240 are similar in weight. Have you driven a 240 with Z brakes before?

Aren't the rx7 turbo model front brakes over 12 inches?...or close to it. Are the Z brake rotors just wider and the pads larger?

Youre talking about the 4pot 5lug brakes right?

Wouldnt the 'power' come from better pads? The only reason to swap anything out is if they couldnt handle the HEAT.

Get some slotted rotors and really good brake pads... that should to the trick.

Like I havent upgraded everything I could already. Check my sig for mods.

It's not all about pads. Piston size also makes a difference but I dont have all the details about the Z brakes. I'll have to ask some of my 240 buddies to get the facts.

to a point

BUT

stock 240sx brakes are fine for most amateur racing. people run stock brakes with aggressive high temperature pads and experience zero fade and have plenty of stopping power, even on a road course.

in other words, 300zx brakes are cool and bling and probably 'feel' like they stop you better, but in reality they don't stop you quicker then stock. for that, high temperature pads and a good set of grippy tires is more then enough.

they do look nice, however.

TII 4pot brakes: 10.9" by 22mm rotor (from FC3Spro.com)
Z32 brakes: 11.02" by 26-30mm rotor

So there is a little bit extra width on the Z brakes. I don't see it really being worth the upgrade though, IMHO.

Also, for anyone who is dead set on this mod, buy reman'd calipers from Pep Boys/Kragens/whoever. My friend did the swap for under $300 on his S13 by doing this.

i would love to get 4 pot brakes in my GX ... ive done the 5 lug swap already so it would match my front brakes.

yea i know "match" ... im very picky about my mods. i want everything to seem like the fit together. if its not stupidly expensive i might look into it, for just the rear. I like my front brakes the way they are.

that would be silly...

especially since you're talking about 'matching' components

changing the rear caliper and crap for no reason

you're going to have to start tweaking brake bias

the reason the 300zx swap is popular on 240sx's is because nissan of japan already figured all that out for us s-chassis owners.

I can guarantee that bigger rotors and calipers = better stopping... better brakes decipate heat better, and also have more surface area for the pad to grab..
I had brmbo on my old ride and let me tell you, the overall stopping was really improved. It was nice and crisp. The only downside was that more force had to be applied to the braking... But once you did it was day and night difference....
