Your Favorite FD Trim Level and Why
Hey guys,
I'm looking to get into the FD game within the next year or so and I'm curious what your favorite trim level in the FD is and why? As far as I know there's these 3 trim levels: Base Touring R (1/2 depending on 93 or 94-95) Just wondering what the benefits are of each one and if there's a general favorite among you. I've been big into the FB scene but think I'll be leaving that for a long time to join you fellas in an FD. Too many cool kids around here have 3rd Gens and I've always wanted one. If you can't beat 'em join 'em right?! Thanks for your time, I appreciate it! |
Personally, in this order...
*Dual oil coolers *No BOSE *Cloth Seats *No sunroof/better head-room |
Touring
Because of the sunroof and leather. I first wanted a R1 because of the duel oil coolers and it's the lightest.I then said to myself, leather I can add,but wait sunroof NO well you can but the aftermarket ones don't look like a clean install and most leak. Now the Touring you can add the oil coolers Oem or upgrades which I'm doing..I can always put it on a diet. The stiffer suspension of the r1 I didn't care about either since I planed on getting coilovers . |
R2 for the street. Quieter better made interior along with lots of cool improvements
R1 or Base for the track. Just a little lighter, no passenger airbag etc..... The only things I don't like about these cars is the sunroof and bose system. They are two things that add weight and mess up the clean look. Today you can buy a really nice aftermarket head unit and speakers for 500. The sunroof weighs about 30lbs and it's up high on the chassis which isn't a great place to add fat and I never use them anyway. |
R1 for dual oil cooler and lighter weight. I don't like sunroof because it is just another potential water leakage.
|
I love the sunroof about my touring, everything else on it didn't matter to me much.
|
I voted R1/2 because they had the common sense to never make one with an automatic.
|
I voted Touring because that's what I have and I couldn't be happier. I use my sunroof a lot, and the Bose system sounds great with a JL speaker stuffed in there. I already did the dual oil cooler swap, which is the only REAL desirable thing about the R1/2...for me anyway.
I get at ton of compliments on the Montego Blue color, too, which is Touring/PEP only. :) |
I like the R1 and Base b/c I don't like leather seats. Beyond that, it's all whatever floats your boat. They are all good. The sunroof is even pretty nice for street driving if it doesn't interfere with your headroom.
|
R2.
A manual transmission is probably the most important feature for FD enthusiasts. If you're modifying, it won't matter too much, especially if you're prepping for the track. The previous owner added the second oil cooler and some other parts to mine. I like my base model because it doesn't have the Bose system or the rear window wiper (better aero, less rust) and ditto on leather seats. I'm not a fan of sunroofs on my own cars, either. |
mine is 93 touring just because I wanted black with red interior and sun roof.
I added aftermarket twin oil coolers along with many other mods :) |
I love my touring with the glass sunroof (moonroof) ?? ... For track I'd want the lightest thing so R1/2...
|
Spirit R would be my favorite trim if only we could have had it here
I have my R1 and I love it not crazy about the sunroof on these cars and the R1 is the lightest so I went with it. |
Touring! I love my goofy Bose sound system, sun roof is awesome as well!
|
R1/2 or base, i own a touring with sunroof but would much prefer the extra head room and the double bubble roof lines look so much better without a sunroof breaking up the subtle curves.
|
Touring or PEP, sunroof is a must when I go cruise, and has to be black with tan leather. I love my tan interior, got that classic look and I get lots of compliment at car show/meet.
|
While I always wanted an R1, I found and bought a great Touring model. And before I never really cared or put any thought about sunroofs, but now that I have one...I noticed I use it A LOT. Love the leather seats too.
Oh and yeah...got rid of the damn BOSE snake :D |
Touring- its all about the leather and sunroof to me. Especially the sunroof.
|
My car is a 94 PEG (performance equipment group). I'm pretty happy with it. I dont miss the bose or rear wiper that comes with the touring package.
|
Atta boy Austin! Come to the dark side.
All I have to say is, rear wiper looks like trash. |

Lol really a wiper? That's what we are focusing on...
I should clarify that my car is also a PEP so it's missing the wiper but I do not dislike them. Now the only thing I mind is the 93's two tone interior. |

All I have to say is, rear wiper looks like trash. Thanks guys for all the awesome reviews, posts and votes! I guess the main two I'm contending with is the Touring and R1/2. Will have to see whether the fiance wants a sunroof or not. I like having one so I'd probably prefer it. I'm short (5' 7" - but 5' 8" with boots on is what I always say!) so headroom doesn't bother me at all. |
I prefer my UK car, we got a touring-r1 hybrid ;).
If I had to choose a US trim level though, I'd go touring for the sunroof. |
base
In my opinion it is the 'cleanest' looking as far as the lines of the car are concerned. The base model reminds me most of one of my all-time favorite cars, the Jaguar E-Type from 1961. |
