Why haven't you done the "fan mod"?

I have seen a number of threads regarding keeping engine temps down. It seems that so few people have done the "fan mod". It was one of the first things I did on my car. It's easy. It's cheap. It works great.

Why haven't you done it?? If you have, lets hear about it!

I haven't done it because it's number 4-f*cking-hundred on my list of things to do to my car.

LAracer 02-27-03 02:53 PM

Did it. Like you said, easy, cheap.

I haven't done becuase I hate wiring and I am waiting for someone to help me do it.

Ward 02-27-03 03:07 PM

i did the miata thermo-switch instead

insomniac 02-27-03 03:13 PM

one of the most easiest mod I've ever done to my car.

Ditto

SPOautos 02-27-03 03:33 PM

I didnt do it cause I've got a Power FC with datalogit and can control when the fans kick on. Mine kick on at 88C and my temps never get over 90C.

Excatly.

I did the mod in the driveway of the house where I got the car... Takes about 11 seconds. :)

apneablue 02-27-03 03:38 PM

I did it and with stock IC and radiator it brings the temps down...I also have the PFC that kicks the fans on at a lower temp..but I can kick the fans on even earlier and bring the temps down about 5°C and more in cooler weather. Damn thing really works...I did the Dave Disney version where you splice into the two fan relays and then mounted a switch in the cockpit. (haha I said cockpit! :D ) anyway, you can see a pic of the small switch I mounted...click on the turbotimer link in my sig.

I haven't done it because the Miata thermoswitch works better and does not require hacking into the wiring harness. The fan mod is SO old fashioned and dated :p:

You DON'T have to hack into the wiring harness. There is a wire behind the ECU just waiting for you to put a spade connector in it. It's hanging there with nothing connected to it. A black wire with a yellow stripe, and a plug on the end. Connect it to a switch ($4 at any parts store). Run the other side of the switch to a ground, and it's done.

Sometimes old fashioned and dated is smart.

This is the easiest mod you will ever do for your car!!

ttb 02-27-03 04:15 PM

i'm stilling questioning whether it is necessary....

Then you have to pull wire to mount the switch somewhere. Then you have to drill a hole in your console or dash. Then you have a switch you don't need in the car. Then you have to turn the damned thing on and off when you want to use it.

Miata thermoswitch: Screws in place of original sensor in coolant neck. Connects with one wire. :D Easy. Stock. Simple. Elegant. Works without you having to instruct it to work. Won't forget to work. Won't forget to turn on or off. Does not require you to modify your interior. When coolant hits 205, it turns the fans on high without you ever knowing.

Miata thermoswitch: It's just more better.

Maybe someone can fill in the "slow" people here. What is the Miata thermoswitch mod? I assume you replace the thermoswitch with a Miata one obviously, but doesn't this have any disadvantages for other things in the car? Also, where's the write-up for this? (I searched)

paw140 02-27-03 04:33 PM

It keeps the coolant cooler. Is this a disadvantage? I can't think of one. As far as a writeup, go to the Mazda dealer, buy a Miata thermoswitch, and install it in the FD. I believe you have to modify the plug?, but it is pretty much plug and play.

Replacing the stock coolant thermoswitch that triggers high speed at 217F with the Miata one that triggers it at 205F.

Nope. This has nothing to do with the temp gauge or anything else, it is merely a switch that instructs the ecu to engage high speed on the fans.

Must not have searched hard. :p: Try:

I did it and love it. A must do for you guys that run the piss out of your car. IMO

skunks 02-27-03 04:41 PM

that was one thing i did the first day i got my fd!

paw140 02-27-03 04:43 PM

Here's some info. The result of a search for 'miata thermoswitch' :)

4. Change the thermoswitch that turns on the radiator fans to a Miata thermoswitch that will turn on the fans at a lower temperature. The Miata thermoswitch is available from aftermarket parts places. You also have to change the existing connector. Get the connector from a 90's something Ford Probe (Mazda engine) at your Pull-It-Yourself wrecking yard.

Miata thermoswitch:

1. Can you turn on the fans anytime you want.....NO
2. Will the fans continue to run for 10 minutes after you shut down the car, to cool the engine compartment.....NO.

The fan mod is lots way more just better!

That's why I did the fan mod. Didn't drill any holes in anything. Found a switch that fits where the dummy switches are. $5. Took 15 minutes.

That's true. Why do I need them on except when the coolant is hot?

That's also true. Blowing hot air from the radiator into the engine compartment ain't gonna help. Pop the hood if you want to cool off after shutdown, it will cool faster and you won't have to run the fans at all.

Nope. You still don't get it. :p:
