Who fits in an FD?

I have been thinking about getting an FD3S RX-7 for a while now, but there is always one thought in my mind. Can I drive it? By that I mean can I physically fit into the seat. I am about 6'5" and 280lbs. Needless to say I am a big ass guy. Cars that I can't/don't like driving Porsche anything, Honda S2000, BMW Z3, and anything else about that size. I can fit into the Viper, Vette and anything American made...The FD looks pretty small to me but I could be wrong... So could you guys/gals tell me how big you are and you you like/dislke driving the car.. Thanks
Jeremy

mightyslash 05-02-02 01:19 AM

I'm 5'6". I fit perfectly.

Neon01 05-02-02 01:29 AM

To be honest, I doubt it. I'm about 6 foot and 170 lbs and I fit just right. If I was any taller however, it would be an ugly situation. Try one out sometime to get the feel for it. I certainly don't want to put someone off buying an RX7...

93TTRX7 05-02-02 01:43 AM

i'm 6'4 about 230 pounds...i just barely fit...but leg wise only. The wheel is so fuckin big that it really bothers my shifting...i think as long as you get the wheel extension and a race wheel you'll be fine

7-sins 05-02-02 03:30 AM

6'4" and I can fit. It is not always the easiest but it works.

zooq 05-02-02 03:43 AM

thank god i'm only 5'5 and 140 lbs. i just have a hard time reaching the clutch :D

RXTRA7 05-02-02 04:06 AM

I have a friend who is 6' 4" and with a NON sunroof car and a racing seat he fits perfectly.
Most racing seats will be 1 - 2 inches lower than stock seat.

redrotaryrock8 05-02-02 09:03 AM

yeah. i had a friend who was around 6'5", and he owned two rx7s (yellow R1 and a red R1-both 93s). But with the R1s its a little better, because the seats are lower and there is no sunroof. he said he fit just fine.
he had the rx7s for maybe 3 years.

he now drives the old model of the bmw M3.

why dont you go and test drive an rx7 before you make a decision.

i am 5'7" and i fit perfectly in the car, but sometimes when i go out for long drives my back starts to hurt big time. and the suspension is so stiff that the car will move up and down with all the bumps so you gotta watch your head.

warsaw 05-02-02 09:27 AM

I'm 6'0, 185 and I fit perfectly.

cavalon2001 05-02-02 09:38 AM

Good Fit

I am 5'7" and I fit in an FD just fine...but I would like to point out the larger you are, the more trouble you will have getting in and out of the car. So if you are going to drive this car every day, or every other day, you may get tired of it if you're much taller than 5'9".

After a long ride, I find it hard to get out of.

-Chris

1bad7 05-02-02 09:46 AM

5'11, 170lbs and its perfect
the only thing i dont like is going for long rides, the seats are really hard and my back starts to cramp up like hell

Flybye 05-02-02 09:57 AM

6' and the heaviest I've been with the FD was like 280lbs. It was tight, but was still able to fit comfy :)

Vintage Red Touring 05-02-02 10:08 AM

I'm 6'3", and 250lbs. I fit snugly, and have no head room issues even with a sunroof.

JONSKI 05-02-02 10:26 AM

It's been a month already!?

I'm 6'3", 155lbs.
Sunroof.
My knees rub the wheel, but otherwise I fit. Snugly!

I would imagine you'll have some fitting issues with an FD. It really depends on where all your height and weight are located as to how well you'll fit.

If you REALLY want an FD, you'll probably at least need to lower the stock seats to the floor or use aftermarket seats (sunroof or not) and an aftermarket steering wheel for comfort.

Kahren 05-02-02 11:49 AM

FD is very similar to an s2000 inside if u dotn liek s2k i really dont think u will like the FD i am about 6' and the only real problem i have is hittign teh steerign wheel with my legs a bit...same as teh s2k btw :)

r_ed_line53 05-02-02 11:59 AM

You know what they say, "If the shoe fits wear it, but if you like it that much and it doesn't, STRETCH IT OUT"

see ya,

jmo87 05-02-02 12:56 PM

5'10" 180 here. I fit great!

slug420 05-02-02 02:11 PM

I am 6'4/6'5 or somethin and im gonna be gettin a car in the next 6-9 months. I have been looking into everything from a sportscar M3/Supra/FD to a 4 door sedan like a Legacy/Protege/Sentra to a SUV like a Pathfinder. Whichever way I go im trying to optimistically assume I will have around a 30k budget (i see this as a 20k car with 10k mods or a 30k car etc...) and since I live in CT, if I went with one of the sports cars I would have to either have a second car for the winter, or keep my dying car I have now and be prepared to spend $$ on repairs. The biggest thing im looking for in a car is something I can mod to make it look badass, and a little hp to backup to look wouldnt hurt but im not speed crazy......

That having been said, in addition to my love for the fd (looks, power, uniqueness) I had counted in as a big pro the headroom/legroom they have, although I have not sat in one and when I stand next to them they look like go-carts, the measurements were impressive. here is a little spreadsheet I put together of the headroom legroom and combined head and legroom of some of the cars I was considering........ http://www.rit.edu/~cjd6114/rx/carz.htm
the 91 mx6 is in there cuz its what I drive now.....
I HATE BEING SO TALL!!

That kinda sucks, because when I sit in an S2K my legs hit the wheel too, more so when I try to work the clutch though. All in all though I can fit if I try, but it isn't comfortable at all. If I get an FD like I plan on getting one, it won't be daily driven, so I guess I'll have to try one on, and if I like it, I'll make it fit. Thanks for your imput everyone.
Peace
Jeremy

Bluem 06-22-02 05:05 PM

I think all the fd need is a stearing weel tilt,a suport for the left arm,a smaller stearing weel, and lower seating position. or you can buy a removable stearing weel.

kkk93rex 06-22-02 05:17 PM

One of my good friends is 6'6" 295 he is very tight in it has to have the sunroof open in my 93 Rex. His only Bitch is the size of the sterring wheel messes with his shifting. Hes pusing me to get a sparch sterring wheel cuz he said he drove one and it was quite comfortable.
im not planning on it .keep him from takin my car. :)

waysho 06-22-02 07:18 PM

I'm about 5'2" so the car was pretty much made for me.. I can stretch out and still have room behind the seat for a bag. But my friend that is 6'2" sat in there and looked pretty squashed. He didnt complain too much but he just looked silly. His knees were on the sides of the steering wheel. You never know.. try one on before you make a decision.

red 7 06-22-02 07:22 PM

6'2" 195 and i dont even put the seat all the way back
only head room prob is when imat the autoX and i have the seat up and forward w/helment on it barely rubs the headliner no sunroof

How the hell do you NOT put the seat back all the way? I have two friends, 1 6'4" and the other is 6'0" and both of them put the seat back...I thought that I was the only guy on the forum who put their seat FORWARD...

...being that I'm 5'4"...and 140 lbs of pure muscle...

....and 20 lbs of fat on top:p:

TYSON 06-22-02 09:03 PM

I can't believe some of you guys fit in this car. I'm 5'8" and a fit 160 lbs. My knee just touches the wheel when I let out the clutch, and I have the seat right to put the clutch to the floor. It is perfect for me, but I feel cramped in the seat with a leather jacket on. It must be quite a fight to get in and out of the car for some of you. :)
I've heard the C5 Corvette is great for big guys, but when some of my friends and I tried the Viper, if they were 6' or taller they had to slouch to see out the windshield!

Johnny 06-22-02 09:14 PM

I'm 5'8" and 180...

have a sparco supersport racing seat..my legs are pretty short..so I scoot the seat pretty much all the way up ! The steering wheel is too big...I have a mazdaspeed D-cut wheel(uninstalled)..which I think will solve my issues

Rogue 06-22-02 09:28 PM

I'm 6'1" 165 when I test drove an FD I had no problems with leg room. Hell I valet I've driven Del Sols(manuals) and had no problems, so I wouldn't say an FD is smaller than an Del Sol.

I've always wondered this(never asked before though), if you install an aftermarket steering wheel won't you lose your horn? I really need a horn around here since there are sooooooo many morons pulling out in front of me.

fd3virgin 06-22-02 11:23 PM

i am five six, about 175 fits ok. if you are six five and 280 it won't be comfortable for long rides. the steering sucks(doesn't tilt) so you might have a hard time trying to squeeze those knees under the steering. best thing find a fd and try to get in. good luck !!! if not rip the
fu@#$#@ seats out and sit in the trunk :) it's still worth it.

elizer 06-22-02 11:27 PM

5'11

5'11 140 lbs. my seat is not all the way back, and i sit pretty close to the wheel. lots of room for me though, just a bitch getting in and out of hte car

RedR1 06-22-02 11:57 PM

5'7'' 140. i fit juuuust right :) Man im probably the shortest FD driver/owner out there. When i met Twin Turbo Pete (fello Jax FD owner) i felt like a frikkin shrimp!

drewroman 06-23-02 07:14 AM

6' 3" 235 lbs. and I fit fine with 2-3 inches headroom and legroom is just right. Dunno what it would be like with a sunroof though.

At 5'10" and 200lbs I'ts a tight fit for my hips and my legs touch the wheel but I have enough headroom for a helmet even with a sunroof - I sit with the seat about 3" -4" forword but have to slide it all the way back to get in/out easily - My gf is 5'4" and thinks the seat is TOO LOW! oh well

209_rx7 06-23-02 03:38 PM

5'11 and 160. I fit pretty good, gotta do a little manuvering to get out, but who doesnt

I've had problems with people saying my car is hard to get into, people of all heights and weights.... but know damn well they are talking about the passenger side, aint nobody driving my car :D

i am the same weight/hegith and i fit great. although i guess i could use just a tad more legroom. Hell, even my 6'2 285 dad fits, although not that comfortably :D
