who daily drives their FD?

I tried a search for "daily driver", but yielded nothing. I'm sure there's a thread like this somewhere though. Anyways, yea like the title says, how many of you guys use your FD as a daily driver? And what set up are you running (ie completely stock, very minor engine mods)? I'd like to see how many owners on here are able to maintain their FD in good running condition to be able to drive to and from work daily. My guess would be these are closer to stock FD's than really modified (for engine purposes). Thanks guys.

Mine is a daily driver, but it just has the reliability mods..

Try searching again. There are a million threads on this.

Rebuilt, street ported, and reliability mods. Driven everyday of the week, no problems whatsoever. But then again, I don't really abuse/redline my car, so maybe that's why I have no problems :)

CarbonR1 10-18-07 01:09 PM

I daily drive my car now too. FD hasn't ever left me stranded in the 1.5 years I've driven her. Only reliability mods and ALL maintenance.

No, just for 6 months out of the year. I store it for winter :)

Oun 10-18-07 01:15 PM

I used to daily mine for about a year w/ reliability mods. no problems. i just bought me a Honda Fit tho. 17 dollars to fill it up.

RLaoFD 10-18-07 01:30 PM

I've DD my FD for 2 and a half years now. Mods in sig, but i wish i had a crx or something cuz now i go to college 200 miles away from home and i like to go home every other weekend, so thats at least 800 miles a month.

rotorsownu 10-18-07 02:25 PM

I DD mine daily wit 500hp

theorie 10-18-07 02:27 PM

i DD mine...when it's running. LOL

DDagman 10-18-07 02:30 PM

Ive had mine as a DD for 2 years, running a massive street port, efini twins at 12 PSI, ECU, full exhaust and intake.

rotorsownu 10-18-07 02:32 PM

Thats true also :)

grimple1 10-18-07 02:35 PM

DD here. Single turbo, dp, midpipe, stock cat (working on it), 1300cc injectors and PFC. I drive it every day and only had 1 problem that was non-rx7 related.

tragic00 10-18-07 02:37 PM

i daily drive mine. had it for 2 years reman engine with 3mm seals. 99 spec turbos, apexi pfc, 255 fuel pump, full bolt ons, intercooler.

meth is coming soon.

car is also fully gutted, and has full suspension with some nasty coilovers.

its my drift car, 8 pt cage is coming soon.

but i will still drive it everyday. even though i have to sit in a real tight race seat. i love it. and i refuse to drive anything else.

RX7 8U 10-18-07 02:43 PM

Carpool to work twice a week. I drive it a total about 100 miles per week. Its on jackstands this week though......installing new springs, shocks, pillow bearings, brakes and new tires/wheels from autornd. We'll see how she does at this weekends auto-x in Santa Maria, CA.

spaceman_spiff 10-18-07 02:46 PM

thanks guys. so i'm comin from a 2000 honda prelude that i did almost no modifications on (aside from a CAI and full catback exhaust), i think i will be pretty pleased with a stock FD's performance. it seems from reading other posts that keeping a FD at stock levels will avoid a majority of the reliability issues? I really think i'd be content using a FD as a daily driver and maybe slapping on some wheels...and a kit...call it a day.

spaceman_spiff 10-18-07 02:50 PM

oh and one more thing. people keep telling me the real issues with FD's arise from modifying the engine for increased performance because it indirectly puts strain on other engine components that were not designed for above-stock levels. for those using 99-spec turbos, did bolting these onto your 93-95 spec FD bring up new issues? seeing how the 99 turbos bump HP up to 280 or so, that is already well above the 255 stock level that the engine components are used to. i would imagine it would create extra stress on the engine and cause reliability issues.

RE-Amemiya 10-18-07 03:41 PM

I used to, car was basically stock with reliability mods.

Really only had to drive 15 miles round trip to and from work though.

pakitagn 10-18-07 05:41 PM

I drive mine as a daily driver and its pretty much all stock. I'm gonna start doin reliability stuff asap

dtn666 10-18-07 05:57 PM

Mine was a DD (mild streetport, 3mm, CBI, DP, CB, Pettit ECU) until I popped the front apex seals about a month ago. As soon as I get her back from Pineapple (Rob hasn't started yet, he's busy moving shop), she'll be a DD again.

I gotta say that maintenance was expensive. Now that we have 3 cars, the FD will only be a fair weather DD.

KaiFD3S 10-18-07 07:12 PM

I used to DD mine in Cali, but since I put all this stuff in I bought a Scion XB to drive, I had to anyway since my gas mileage was eating my wallet up..lol..

1QWIK7 10-18-07 08:20 PM

There was a time where i used the FD every single day. Not so much daily driving where im doing my errands but driving the FD at least once a day but i stopped. Its just more comfortable and convenient to just hoping in the DD and going. Dont have to worry about excessive warm up, idling problems, making sure kids wont steal your car when you park, dont have to worry about cops when you wanna gun it. Dont have to sit and wait for the car to cool down because heatsoak.

I dont see how anyone can DD their FD.

13Foxtrot 10-18-07 08:45 PM

I DD one of my FDs every day. Light mods... I have AutoX'd it once already too. Driving an FD every day puts a smile on my face every time I hop in it. These cars were meant to be driven. Now when it comes down to money and gas mileage; you just have to make the smart choice with that.

gabe[7] 10-18-07 08:53 PM

i do for the last 5 mothns ive onwed it...
M2 intake, ASP medium SMIC, RB exhaust, DP, Hi flow cat, PFC, Tokico shocks, Eibach springs...no problems yet except for the battery

Hitokiri_Gensai 10-18-07 09:23 PM

I daily my FD during the late spring to late fall months, ie, March to November, but thats it, winter months shes stored away in a nice warm (ish) garage.

u got it all wrong sunny go read some faqs

skir2222 10-18-07 10:27 PM

I use to DD my FD, rather drive it at night and on weekends. I love it, it's a blast just don't want to get tired of it.

Larz 10-18-07 10:40 PM

I did for a short time. I don't like putting miles on her for stupid BS errands. not to mention the horrific gas mileage. I found an old honda and have been using that since.

TK7 10-18-07 10:52 PM

I semi DD mine. If i wake up and feel like driving it, i drive it. If i dont, my wife takes me to work, cause its pretty much on her way.

What do you guys consider "DD" how many miles are we talking about. If i drive mine to work and back, its only about 10miles.

prew 10-18-07 10:55 PM

I used to DD mine but my family has always had 2x the amount of cars per drivers so I always had a backup. It really depends on your situation and what you need a DD for.

If you are a kid and can bum rides, show up places late or not at all then you could prolly DD any FD. If you have a job or other important places to be I would find something reliable.

rexhvn 10-18-07 10:59 PM

I daily drive mine everrryyy day :) no trouble as of it! But I do tend to work on it, putting it out for a couple of days, and use my other car just for back up. My FD is stock.

2wheelsmoker 10-18-07 11:11 PM

I've put 3000 miles in the past 1 month alone. My car burns no oil, runs on a single turbo, and has a huge VMIC. The killer is that it gets 13-17mpg.

I have no reservations commuting in my car whatsoever. I would drive from SF to LA or SD with no hesitation (aside from lack of AC, can't have it all).

the_saint 10-18-07 11:18 PM

DD in the summer.

Mods listed below.

It 'hibernates' from November-March/April due to SNOW and SALT :(

JTurtonRX_7 10-18-07 11:25 PM

my question is who doesnt DD their fd? Ive been daily driving mine for 5 years, its just a car....

Hitokiri_Gensai 10-19-07 12:14 AM

JUST a car? wow your gonna get flamed xD

FD3S2005 10-19-07 12:30 AM

it is just a car but its not a car you want to take to a mall parking lot or anything. i bet you would feel like crap if you walk back to your car and find a nice dent or key mark..etc.. i would know it happen to me on the third month i had the car, came out of a best buy, parked away from everyone and still ended up getting backed into i think.. (hit and run) and had a lil dent on the front right bumper. didnt notice till i got home... and all i thought was i wish i had my dodge neon that got hit..

jacobcartmill 10-19-07 12:56 AM

i DD my FD.

i've owned it for a year now; i autocrossed it 4 times over the summer in 100 degree heat, i've made 40+ 1/4 mile passes in it.

the key to DD'ing a high performance car is to make SURE everything is sorted out on it (ie, no boost leaks, bad tuning, etc.) and everything is kept up with (meticulous oil changes, coolant flushes, spark plugs). and on the FD this is of course assuming that all the reliability mods have been done (downpipe, radiator, ast, etc)

rotaries -even turbo ones!- can be as reliable as any other car out there if you take care of them. as to whether or not you should or shouldn't daily-drive an FD, its all about your lifestyle and how you take care of the car.

PowerStripe 10-19-07 01:42 AM

^well said. I just got my FD about 6 months ago and its been my DD ever since. It has all the reliability mods done and i baby it close to an obsession......ok it is an obsession haha. But i do have a back up that i drive when i need to get some where in a hurry (that way i dont have to wait for warm up etc...) or save some gas/not put unecessary miles on it.

It brings a smile to my face just looking at it....shit actually just thinking about it, how could you not want to drive it as much as possible? I love my car and as long as i keep it well maintained, i will continue to drive it daily

Goukid2 10-19-07 02:37 AM

I daily drove mine up until 2 days ago. Found a sweet ass 96 Nissan Sentra for 1200 bucks and 92XXX miles that i daily drive now. Bought it from some old lady. Rx-7 will be strictly for nice days now.

sm0keyii 10-19-07 04:15 AM

I DD mine with having to top off coolant every 50 miles and bad oil seals on teh twins. Just a few more parts to aquire before my rebuild =) I'm trying to find a DD myself looking for a cheapo 4 cyl pick-up or Miata

rash_rvg 10-19-07 07:26 AM

DD for almoust a year now. PFC, downpipe, cat-back and intake.
Only had 1 problem that was when the water-pump failed (detected it on time, no dmg done)

purerx7 10-19-07 12:00 PM

drove mine everyday for the past 4 years, only have cb, dp, and intake.

Specter328 10-19-07 12:13 PM

I'm coming up on a year now, the only thing that would stop me is if it was not running, a bad storm, or snow.

DrunkenBowler 10-19-07 12:26 PM

I DD mine all last winter because my honda DD went under, and I didn't have time to fix it. Sadly, the FD went under and my honda works great. I can never seem to keep both cars running at the same time.

AzEKnightz 10-19-07 12:29 PM

DD for past 2 years. Not much problems until i messed things up =) Dont redline often, car treats me well other than gas =)

theorie 10-19-07 12:34 PM

here's my current DD:

https://img514.imageshack.us/img514/2712/bikevr7.jpg

fixed gear, no brakes, hell yes

well, in that case... Id shoot the honda in the face!

spaceman_spiff 10-19-07 02:47 PM

seems like a lot of guys here run their FD's as DD's. This is encouraging to me, because a lot of other times I've read people say to not use it as a DD and to have a back-up car. Just more reason for me to pull the trigger on getting one...
