Where'd you get your rx7 from???
 

Hi, I've got about 8 grand saved up right now, anyways, I am looking to save about 7 more and get a third generation rx7.

What I'm wondering is where did you guys find your rx7 at? There are not alot in this area (Nebraska), and i havent even seen one in person yet.

Currently, Im looking around on Ebay, and sites like wheelsforyou.com and cars.com.

COuld u give me some ideas on where i should get an rx7 once i have the money, and also, how much time did u spend researching about rx7's before you bought one?

read the stickies completely and make sure you have enough funds for it first
then take the time to look for one. dont just buy it on ebay and have it shipped
a lot of scams these days too, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

I found mine here in town. I would not buy one off ebay for the fact that a lot of guys on the board have sold there car and found them on ebay or autotrader. Just look into the seller and make sure you dont get scammed.

I kind of found mine on ebay. The owner was in NM right next door to TX. So, I got to see it before I bought it for 14k with 35k org. miles in excellent condition (no mods). I would check on cars.com and ebay. But limit the search to miles on ebay to your area. When I was shopping there were a ton in Phoenix.

I found mine off a member of this forum. Check the for sale section and your regional sections for great results.

I've noticed that the rx7's i've seen for sale on the forum are generally always in great condition compared to others found elsewhere.

Also, if the seller is well known and respected across this forum, you know a little bit more about who your buying the car from and possibly how they have taken care of their car, instead of knowing nothing about the seller and how they treat their car.

The key is to be patient for the right one to come along, I would fall in line with others who warn of ebay. NEVER buy a 7 off ebay site unseen. I had bought mine a while back and have a long road ahead to fix many of the things that were done wrong on it. Ebay tends to be the place people sell them when they cant get rid of them elsewhere. Found mine on this forum. Talk to the seller, got as much info as possible, pics, talked to the shop that had been working on the car for years, few out to Memphis, picked her up and drove her home.

Saw mine on Ebay and it was about 500 miles away. I contacted him prior to the end of auction to get more info on the car. I asked if for some reason his buyer backed out and he had to relist the car if he would give me a call to set something up. The buyer backed out and I drove down with a trailer, checked it out and bought it!. Towed it home that day. I would NEVER buy something that big off of EBAY unless it was within driving distance. There are way too many scams out there, especially with the 3rd generation RX-7.

I flagged down the owners and told them to call me if they wanted to sell. 2 years later they called out of the blue. COMPLETELY BLINDSIDED ME

The For Sale section here is a good start. I bought mine from www.lamotorcars.com. They sell many FD's.

if you really want to score, then wait and find a personal owner that hopefully is older and has not modified the car, only routine scheduled maintenance and low mileage. The only problem there is not a lot of these cases out there. You have time so you have an advantage. this is exactly the case I was in and I found a gem. $18,000 - mint/showroom condition, 39,000 original. 2nd owner, was over 50 and meticulously cared and serviced the car. Only downfall, if you see it that way, was I had to drive it home 1000 miles, most fun drive I have ever had. I know I took a big chance driving that far, not really, I had them do a diagnostic and compression and had them prepare the car for a long trip. The car performed like I was on a 48 hour lemans or something, also got good gas mileage for the FD. Never looked back since and would have not done it different, you will have to modify for reliability unless its already been taken care of. goodluck

Living on the east coast, they're pretty easy to find, but finding one in good condition proves more difficult- patience is vital. I myself researched 7s for about a year before buying mine, and continue to learn/research from that point to present.

Quick question though, while buying a 7 may be a bit tricky now, do you plan on working on it yourself? You say there aren't many 7s in your area and that you haven't seen one yourself...does this also hold true for shops in your area that may be able to service the vehicle should it need work?

I'd check your regional section for some information on buying one within your area, and also pay some attention to how you're going to maintain the car. :)

I got my first one when I was station in Peurto Rico. Then it got stolen 3 weeks later.Then it was a total lost including the death of 2 teens (long story). My second one, I got it from a guy that live in Virginia on my way back from the states, I found it in Autotrader. Mechanically it was pefect but the body needed a little bit of work, but I was happy. I sold it to a guy in Ohio when the car was in Ca (I was deplyed). I sold it for $8k. I waitied a bit longer so I could get finacialy stable again and then I got my second one. I found it on Autotrader also but I got lucky. I was planning to drive from SC to TN to get a balck one. The day I was going to take the drive I found my third FD localy. So I drove 6 miles to his house and picked my second one, red completly stock and in near show room condition. I got it for $13k with 86k miles on the chassis. I was the third owner. I had it for a little bit of a year when I realize that $16k that put into it in just one year was enought + the other $6k that i needed to do a single turbo. but in that year I brought the car back to showroom conditions. I was flawless. Not a single ding or scratch. Paint was perfect the interior looked new. People didn't believe me when I told them it was a 93. But I couldn't see myself putting more money in it so I sold it to the previous owner for $18k. I miss it from time to time but the day he came here and told me that he just put $2k in just upkeeping and some minor upgrades in a month... I said no more for me.

I am planning on owning another FD some day (if Mazda doesn't release a 4th gen RX-7 but not holding my breath) But I won't go as far as I did.

My recommendation is to save as much as possible so you can get what you really want. I would recommend a 94+ with very low miles, because they have some less headaches (interior for one of them). Don't buy a modded one and take it easy. It took me 6 years to save up for my FD's, so just be patient. If you have to fly to see one then do it. I had people flying here to see my FD.

I looked in autotrader, cars.com, ebay, and many other online places for about 6 months and finally found the perfect one for me in Dallas, Texas. Flew from Michigan and drove it back.

I found mine off the Autotrader online. If I were to do it again, I would pick one up on the F/S section on this board.

Mine came from a guy that moved here from texas that purchased it in late 2001 from l.a. motorcars, 22k then... 4500$ now :) w00t

Well...in 1994 I bought a crystal white Cobra while the little brother bought a 7 from Houston, TX...first 2 yrs it was sitting in our parents garage while little brother practicing medicine with the Cleveland Indians...the 7 was hardly driven, barely 20K miles in 2000...

In 2004 little brother moved up north...left behind a mint 7 with less than 48K miles...bought it back for less than $10K.

Bought mine off of autotrader from alan christian motorcars in michigan. Said it was perfect, had perfect compression blah blah blah. Had it shipped to Kansas, whereupon it did not start, has crappy compression and won't hotstart. It also dies if left in drive (automatic) while stopped when car is warm, turbos are bad. Yeah I got screwed. Had it since last feb. currently saving money to fix it all.

I searched for a year or maybe two. Be careful there is a ton of scammers. I mean alot. Never make a transaction without transfer of title and seeing the car in person. End of story..No exceptions on this...

I have tried to buy literally 5 different cars, all of which didn't exist. Be strong with the sellers and get the details up front. Be willing to drive a ways and get the opinions of the people on the board. Don't post general comments or you WILL get flamed. Post details and people will be glad to help. Don't get in a hurry. This can loose you a lot of money in a hurry and some owners think their junk is worth alot because it is badged RX7. Most cars are boogered. You should learn as much as you can in the mean time while you are waiting.
