Where to place Fire extinguisher??
 

Sorry Posted this in NE forum, but I kinda
want Everyones opinions.

After reading about what happend to
Anthony's RX7 "Burning down to the ground".
I thought to myself.. " Helll I got to much
time, money, effort and tears in my FD3S,
not to be careful."

I don't mind having to fix something and such and
such, But I don't have the $$ or the time to
rebuild a whole FD3S.

SO I went out and bought a FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

BUT where to PUT it??????

Would it be considered " RICEY " " RIKKI" " Hurting"
" Trifling" " tring to hard" " HOnda wannabe "
To mount the Fire extinguisher on the Passenger
side A piller??

Any suggestions on where to mount it?? Or should
I just keep it in the hatch???

I keep mine in the bin behind the driver's side seat.

Bought it before I got the car. Always carry one. Always will.

Although I haven't had to use one yet. Thank goodness.

I have a full size one from a while back ... pressure is still good on it ... but it sure as shit won't fit in the bins ... hahah I wonder if these things would explode if they got too hot ... hmmm.

Here's a tip that could've saved Anthony ... check the gauge every little while. make sure there's still pressure in it. If it doesn't have a gauge ... then either get one or test it every once in a while.

If you bought one with a plastic neck take it back.

They are totally worthless. You get what you pay for.....

what size should you get/ the ones i see put on the A-pillar seem to be pretty small. I figure a good 10 pound bottle would be good?

No doubt ... i got one from an old building we were closing down. It's the heavy duty one that weighs about 20 lbs. hehe

A few suggestions:

(1) Spend the $$ for a halon extinguisher-- at least 5 lbs. size. Get one with a metal nozzle and metal mounting bracket. Try Pegasus (got mine there) or Truechoice or some other race shop.

(2) Make a bracket from plate steel or aluminum, and bolt it to the floor in front of the passenger seat, using the front seat rail mounting bolts. You can bolt the metal bracket that comes with the extinguisher to the new bracket that you have made. You may need to get longer bolts, but make sure that you get high strength bolts.

(3) The A-pillar is not a good choice, since it's in the path that someone's head might take in an accident. Back in the hatch is not readily accessible. Behind you in the bins may or may not be readily accessible when the time comes. The floor in front of the passenger seat is usually accessible without putting the canister in the proximity of your head or your passenger's.

All of the above assumes that you've got a street car. If you're building a track car with a roll cage, then invest in the $$ for a plumbed-in system with a big bottle. Again, see Pegasus or a race shop for systems.

ya the pillar is ricey and dangerous, artowar2 had some very good suggestions, i'd probably keep mine in the bin behind me, but then again, i'm not worried about fire.. (though i know it can happen)... but hey! thats what insurance is for! lol j/k

last week my friends and i where at a parking lot doing burnouts and trying to drift in my friends 240sx and my other friend had a 96 camaro, so what happened was that my friend with the camaro was doing a donut for about a minute when his power steering pump got hot and poped a hose or something but his car got on fire and my friend with the 240sx had a Fire extinguisher a little bigger than those that go on the pillars and sprayed the entire bottle and it still wasnt enough so we ran to a broken water sprinkler (spell check) and filled up a cardboard box with water and put out the fire that shit was crazy.

He should've had one on each A-pillar. Seriously two might not be a bad idea. Bolt one down on the passenger side, and maybe one in the trunk? I've got an extingisher but I havne't decided where to put it. I've got a box full of emergency supplies in the trunk... might try there.

Just please don’t turn rice and put it on the A-pillar. Also get a real fire extinguisher and not some chromed out rice piece.

On my rollcage, between passenger and driver
seat... Fits nice and easy to grab...

go to homedepot and buy 2-10lb bottles and put them in the back of your seats.

But think about the bonus points he'd score with the honda crowd. ;) I'm surprised nobody is marketing "custom" extinguishers for the kids.

Hey Jason, You have a full 7 point roll cage? Custom build or was it a "kit". I'll need one eventually since my car doesn't have ANY luxuries except for a cd player and 2 alpine speakers.:p:

Don't drive it on 90+ degree days..

But yea I got like a 12" chrome BDX fireextinguisher.
Cost me like 40 bucks. not sure how much weight.

I think I gonna mount it in the middle, behind both
seats, on the plastic divider. Dividing the rear hatch
area and the cabin.

Does anyone if High Heat affects fire extinguishers??
Obviously its gonna be left inside the car, and days like
today. it probably 200degree's in the car..

Was thinking of the Apiller, but didn' tthink of the safety
issue.. Would hate myself if my GF had a fireextinguisher imprint on her head.. Passenger
floorboard infront of the seat not good for me.
Cause the MISS's like to scoot UP..

Yea, I was thinking the same thing about mounting it on the cabin/hatch divider. I also thought about mounting it between the storage bins but i dont know if there is enough room.

I dont want to extinguishers so what is a decent size that will but out a fire if its cought early?

Are any good fire extinguishers that look nice like a good chrome one. I've seen alot of chrome ones that done even say what weight they are!!!! Whats a good brand that will actually be of use and have a nice chrome finish with a gauge?

I picked up one from a local automotive store. I didn't mount it, it sits in the passenger side storage bin.

It was too big to mount on the passenger side floor (didn't want my wife kicking/tripping on it), and I felt putting it on the floor behind seats or in the trunk wasn't too accessible.

I would not place on passenger side A pillar. I would put it somwhere where i can actually reach it in a pinch like behind passenger seat.

engine fires suck

if you have the time and the money like you say, you can get a fire system, where all you will really see is the cord you pull incase of a fire, and i think a tank that gets mounted in the trunk. But nozzles get places either through out the cabin or the engine compartment, im not sure. I think there around 500 bucks or so, but if you want to be extra safe thats the ticket. Or you could ghetto rig your windshield sqirters so they can be fire extinguishers :)

I would definitely advise against mounting the extinguisher on the plastic cabin/trunk divider. Take a closer look at how that thing is held in place, two plastic tabs on the upper corners.. now imagine adding the weight of an extinguisher onto it and slamming on the brakes. I know I have gotten that thing to come loose with no extra weight on it by slamming on the brakes hard, it is a cheap plastic piece of junk. Mounting it on a roll cage of on the floor is the best idea for safety and accessibility.

Fire extinguisher system is a good buy. I think it has two nozzles that you can mount in the back and front of the engine bay.
It's like a roll cage that is worth the extra measure of safety.
