where to hook the chains
where to hook the chains
im about ready to pull my motor out. i did pretty good on getting everything else disconnected (about 8-10 hours of work) and i dont know exactly how or where to hook the chains to the block to pull it out. the service manual didn't really help.
all thats left is the 5 tranny bolts and however many bolts there are that secure the bolt the frame. i did a search and it said there is a hook on the UIM, which i found. and one near the alternator. i found one tiny *** one to the left which i wouldnt know how to hook a chain to..... and one to the right of the alternator, on the side of the block which is kinda shaped.
any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Either use the factory hangers (passenger side, rear of engine, at UIM, and drivers side between altenator and power steering, attached to WP I believe, or use the latter, mentioned above, and a location where the bellhousing bolts to on the passenger side, top, but use the location with the most metal around it, not the thin wall bolt hole. It's been awhile since I've been there, but if you look at it, it is easy to tell.
The trick is to get the engine balanced while on the hoist/chain, so you may have to "Play' around a little to get it right.
The factory hangers are plenty strong enough to pull the engine, although you may bend the one by the alternator a little, it will be no problem. Good luck!

to answer my own quesition, yes it does. its seperated but the flywheel isn't completely clearing the bellhousing, when i jack it to a certain point, the car starts coming with it, any tips?

Then gently pry the bellhousing from the motor with a large screw driver.
Also, whats probably happening here is you don't have the engine properly balanced on the chain, so you're putting to mutch stress on one or more of the alignment dowels, and possibly the tranny input shaft, that's why it's not coming apart.

PS, if you're jacking and the car comes off the ground, you're lifting to hard, something is bound up.

You need to put a floor jack under the tranny and lift it up a little while hoisting the engine up at the same time, at least until you clear the motor mount bolts.
