Whats up w/ my a/f guage?

I few days ago my A/f gauge ( have an autometer by the way) starting acting funny.

Before, at idle it would show nothing. but now at idle it it will show almost full rich. Any idea whats going on?

cash money 03-24-02 08:52 PM

those things are known for not being very accurate, so its probably doing what its known for

Zoomspeed 03-24-02 09:26 PM

why would it all the suddenly read something completely differnt at idle? Isn't it not suppose to read anything at idle?

legendr35 03-24-02 09:44 PM

mine did that when my air pump when out.

now that I think of it, I just installed an apex intake, and instead of routing the airpump to the intake I just put one of those little filter on it. could that have something to do with it?

Are you still on a stock or non-programmable ECU?

Zoomspeed 03-24-02 11:00 PM

I'm running a g-force

From what I understand, if you remove the function of the air pump without a programmable ECU like the PowerFC, then the car runs really rich at idle (since the normal stock and reprogrammed ECU's think the air pump is still there).

but the airpump is still there and functioning. I just has a little filter on it instead of it going to the big intake filter.

it is normal for the car to idle rich. If I saw no LEDs when the car was idling, I would think something is very wrong. My car has always idled in the green LEDs.

Call 911 03-25-02 06:16 PM

My car reads 2nd led from full rich and idles great which is the same at WOT. With no air pump. I thought thats normal. In fact I thought thats how you knew what your a/f ratio should be at WOT. O well im not changing nothing.

Zoomspeed 03-25-02 06:32 PM

I thought the a/f gauge is only suppose to give a reading when on the throttle. So, was something wrong earlier or is soemthing wrong now?

jmo87 03-25-02 06:47 PM

mine idles fairly rich according to my autometer a/f gauge

SoulPyr0 04-21-02 09:43 PM

Do you have a 3 wire or a 1 wire o2 sensor ?
I have the problem with it not showing up at idle or while i have my foot off the gas... i need help figuring this one out i have it hooke up to a Sport Comp Autometer A/F gauge and a 1 wire o2 sensor and it works fine while driving and idles fine but, what else is wront help help help !

allrotor93 04-21-02 10:03 PM

a/f guage

i have the same problem. my a/f guage shows nothing at idle. it only shows signs of life when i am at throttle. hould i hook it up to the o2 sensor or directly to the computer? thanks.

SoulPyr0 04-21-02 10:11 PM

i have no clue man, i with you on this man... i have the same prob. someone said that the o2 sensor could be bad and get a new one... do you have a 1 wire or 3 wire o2 sensor ?.... i need to get that fixed... it makes me look dumb... oh yeah... will your guage go all the way to Rich at max throttle ?

allrotor93 04-21-02 10:35 PM

a/f

SoulPyr0,
i think we have the same setup and the same problem. my uage always reads rich at full throttle.

GsrSol 04-21-02 10:57 PM

An a/f ratio gauge reads off of the O2, therefore it will read anytime the car is running and the O2 is warmed up. Doesn't matter if it's reading off the O2 or ecu.

I am all the way lean at idle but at the blip of the throttle, it goes up. I do still have my airpump but I think my readings are fine. Lean at idle, perfect at 1/4 throttle, and rich at anything above 1/2 throttle (more rich at full throttle).

SoulPyr0 04-21-02 11:11 PM

See, i have the 1 wire set up and i dont read anything at idle but, works fine at 1/4 throttle and at full throttle i read 2 green and no more and it will never reach full rich... not even while at 1/4 throttle... i dont know what's up... I mean i think i need a new o2 sensor !

gzon 04-22-02 05:13 AM

My A/F shown also nothing at idle, moves like a disco on easy throttle and goes really rich on full.

SoulPyr0 04-22-02 06:03 AM

See, mine wolnt go all the way rich on full !

gzon 04-22-02 06:08 AM

mine isnt going all the way on rich, its got 2-3 leds left.

SoulPyr0 04-23-02 06:41 PM

Same here !

Nathan Kwok 04-23-02 10:34 PM

Mine idles off the scale lean on my A/F gauge. Even at light throttle its off the scale. Only when I give it gas does it go onto the scale, and WOT its 1 or 2 LEDs full rich. I have a J&S readout though so it may be different. As long as you're passing smog then your idle mixture should be ok, at least here in CA where it has to be pretty spot on or you'll throw out too many HCs.

SoulPyr0 04-25-02 09:44 PM

Hey, i figured it out... there is something called a PORT AIR and there is a BLUE releif sylonid on the driver's side of the engine beside the alternat. and just pull it out and you should get a constant reading of what your car is truly reading... i'm not sure if it will mess up anything if anyone knows, please inform me, i will plug it back in...haha... but, if you have questions where it's at just ask
