what to do with 10,000 dollars
 

ok i have ten grand to put in to my 94. I'm wondering what would be the best way to spend it. i am getting exaust in my cooling system.i have a power fc computer,msd ignitions,gretty intercooler,blitz nurspec exaust,already .i am looking to do the work myself also.

If you can do it yourself, then do a 20b swap. Thats what I would do.

I think the main question should be what do you want to do with the car? I'd determine a goal before throwing 10k at it. :nod:

I'd say that part of the plan depends on the existing state of the other parts under the hood.

How is the wiring harness? Crispy or still usable? replace if original.
What is the state of the turbo system? Is boost functioning normally? Are the turbos working OK? If not, then maybe consider a single turbo from A-Spec (assuming your State's smog regulations allow this) or refresh what you have.

You will need new coolant hoses, fuel line recall kit, have the injectors cleaned, possibly larger secondary injectors depending on your goals, gaskets, motor mounts, oil pan brace, crush washers, hose clamps etc etc.

$10k goes quickly

Honestly if I was the OP I would draw out everything I want to do with the car then see which one is the most feasible. Audio system, Engine/Performance, looks. Those are the 3 main aspects of any car.

Install a single turbo, upgrade your fuel system, install some water injection. If you still have money left over, suspension, Stoptech BBK are some options.

I'm suprised you are giving contrary advise to where you are.

Obveously, this is a car forum, not an investing forum. Meaning this fellow has already made up his mind to spend his money on his car.

YOUR general lack of understanding of this thread speaks volumes about you (not you generation) and the condesending comment "blanketing everyone in our generation as if we are the downfall to come" isn't much appreciated.

If you can't contribute anything but negitivity, then keep it to yourself.

Besides, the youth are a product of decisions made & actions (or lack there of) made by our forgoers in times past, so you have nobody to blame but yourself.

To the OP:

We need to know more about your car's current state of being.

Vehicle application is also important; street, track (what kind of track app.) show, etc.

Is 10K everything you have? (as all FD owners can tell you, have an Oh Shit! Fund)

How mechanically inclined are you?

Do you have tools (tons of nice parts and not tools to mount them with is a bummer)

do younhave a factory service manual? (FSM) that is the first thing you should grab up.

There is a lot you need to tell us, in order to give you good advise on what to spend your money on.

Considering your stated goals and the fact that you are getting exhaust in your cooling system it sounds like its time for a new engine. If your current engine has high miles and you want to get the "best" I would recommend a brand new one from Malloy. If it has lower miles (say under 40k), then you can rebuild it instead or get a reman. From what I've seen though, rebuilds and remans don't last as long as new ones.

You'll be looking at about $5-6k for the new engine, then if you are looking for lots of power, you can go single. You already have most of what you need to support the single upgrade, and you can definitely complete the job for under $4k if you do it yourself. The turbo and manifold will run about $2500, then you'll need injectors, intake, and new intercooler piping. With good tuning you can have 400rwhp at reasonable boost and with decent reliability.

All that said, there is more to your car than just power. Personally if I had that much to spend I'd shoot for 300hp on stock twins (already achievable with your mods) and maybe just get a reman and a good tune. Then instead pour money into all the little things that make the car look and feel old (ball joints, engine mounts, bushings, interior parts, seating surfaces, weather sealing, fixing rattles, performing service bulletins, paint, etc). If you like doing work yourself, sound proofing the car is also a nice project. There are also a lot of "age related" issues that can subtley affect driveability even if they aren't completely bad like grounding wires, wiring harnesses, tired fuel injectors, lazy solenoids, etc. If you address those types of things I think you'll have a much more satisfying car to drive overall than simply adding more power. Just my 2 cents.

Since we know nothing about the OP other than "I wanna go fast".

We know nothing about the status of the car's current condition and/or whether or not he's doing the mechanic work himself.

So until we know any of that, I'll say it too "don't spend any of it on the car" .... and I'll add "yet"

Too often I see broke kids pissing away all their money on a car. Some go into debt so they can have a cool car. Then they loose their job or something happens and they are screwed. Or the credit card balances accumulate for years and the $5k in parts you bought becomes $15k in credit card fees over time.
