Visual differences between S8, S7 and S6 engine
 

Hi!

I ordered new FD engine core and it is supposed to be S8 engine, but there isn't any serial number or year of production written on it. So I would like to know, to reliably recognize S8 engine on visual inspection. Also, some clean S8 engine pictures are welcome.

So far, the only difference I've found is a bit different thermostat housing. At least I suspect it is. Anyway, I find the thermostat housing, right under the cap, a bit different on S6 engines. Anyway, my car had now second engine (broken seals and overheated), and I don't know when was it installed, but it was probably in 97 or 98, so it is probably S7 engine. But this kindof thermostat in also on S8 engines:

As you can see, it has black underbody under the cap. I don't know if this is true, so if I'm wrong please someone correct me.

Is there any sort of marking (plate etc) on the engine at all? If you don't know already, the Japanese often use their own dating system, as opposed to the western system - 1999, 2000, etc. Using the Japanese system, this year is Heisei 15 (Hesei 1 was in 1989).

I've looked all over the engine, and I've found few markings, but don't know what they mean. I can post pictures when I get to the camera...

The only marking that looked like a serial number was on the front side housing: "E097363". Then there was something handwritten on few places: "R13-F23". Also, there is something engraved on various engine parts (housings): "N3-A1".
And then I also found this on the waterpump: "W6R0868". That's all I could find and it is probably everything that's there. The only thing I didn't thorougly checked was the oil pan...

For everyone else's info - this engine is for the OTHER FD (yes there are only 2 in the country) :)

There was a pretty good comparison on this forum a very long time ago, unfortunately I don't believe it's still around. :(

All I know/read is that the later 13B-REW engines had better oil and watter passages or something like that. How to tell from the outside I wouldn't know...

the differences are as follows
94: ic pipes are now black instead of silver painted.

95: fuel recall done on us models from the factory, filler cap adaptor standard in metal (this was a coolant recall part so all usa cars should now be metal, non-usa had no recalls). oil metering lines do not have braided covering any longer.

96: updated thermostat housing, its 1 peice, they got rid of the cap adaptor thing, metal lower intake gasket. efini y pipe

99: one peice vacuum rail, repositioned coils. the 280hp spec has turbos with bolt on compressor housings.

the actual engine blocks are the same from 92-02 with the exception of revised rotor housings for 99. they made changes to the metering oil nozzles

So, j9fd3s' indication about thermostat housing confirmed my observation. So it seems my '94 fd has S7 engine with broken seals, and I got new engine which is at least S7 or S8 - according to this information.

IC pipes, rails and other stuff I cannot use to recognize the engine series, because the engine core I got only includes engine block without intake manifold, with w.pump, thermostat, oil pan and flywheel.

You mean EGR or PCV ?

Euro FDs don't have EGR.
