Under pan?
 

Anyone got any pics of right up under their car from the front? I need the under belly pan that goes to the radiator to help flow air to the radiator. My car was overheating and I was told that could be a reason for it. I called Ray at Malloy today and he said that was an expensive part, $139. Can I make a home made one somehow? $139 is a lot for a pan!

Just buy the pan from Ray. $139 is cheap to keep your motor form dieing(sp?) On second thought, you should drop by your local Rotary shops and poke around they may have some of these Underbelly pans laying around. People either forget to reinstall them or just remove them when they install new front bumpers that don't bolt-up.

Search for "underbelly" pan there are a couple of pics on the board

just buy it. making one will be hard and prob not fit as well.

$139 is a lot? It's worth every penny IMO. Try overheating your engine and compare the price of a rebuild to what that tray costs. :)

$139 is not expensive for a necessary part. Don't be such a cheapo. :rolleyes:

You own the wrong car if you think an important item like the underpan is expensive at $140. I know of several people who were running hot until they replaced the pan -- and solved their heating issues. I strongly suggest you get a pan, either used from the forum or new from Malloy or Mazdaformance.

Are there any other sections of ducking under the car that may be needed to aid cooling? like things that mech may have left off over the years?

I know I am missing one of my oil cooler ducting (R1) and the under pan. But could I be missing more?

A used one will be fine. Probably not too dificult to find on the parts forum. Don't try to make one. That would take way too long, and it will never fit right.

check the part sales section sometimes people have them for sale and also people parting out FDs may have one laying around. You could also contact Fritz flynn he has ALOT of FD parts....

my car hasn't had one in two years. with a cheap napa thermostat, it never hit more than 98*C and with the mazda oem thermo, it's never gone above 87*C

Well I made my own. It took a few hours. I could have bought a new one but the stock one never seals up tight w/o foam and additional ducting. The one I made seals perfectly and my temps dropped by about 5 deg F at least. Cheap too, only about $5-$10 in parts.

Next time I have my car up on a lift I'll try to remember to take a few pics.

Is that temp drop compared to not having one at all, or compared to the factory pan?

Compared to the factory pan without extra foam and stuff to make it air tight. Most of the locals around here have theirs sealed up with the same results as me, except theirs look better. I went this way because I figured it would take just as much time making ducting for the stock underpan as making an all new one. Saving money is nice too but it wasn't the main reason I did this to my car. The original one on my car was destroyed.

personnaly, i have seen temp drops from about 15-20 degrees f. with the type of airduct shown in the thread above. i made mines using a stock pan and sheet metal. cost me about... 2 bucks i think :)

BTW: 139 is not that bad although you gotta question, where the heck did yours go??? I mean all FD's did come with them and they did come with the car for a reason :)
