Tone Behind Kick Panel
Tone Behind Kick Panel
When I start my 93 FD, shortly after, I will start to get a soft tone coming from the driver's kick panel. If I turn on the lights, the tone starts immediately. So a draw on the system causes the sound. Some research I've done leads me to believe it's a bad ground. I've poked around the wiring in the kick panel and behind the radio hoping the tone would react, but nothing. I had the dash and center console out to refinish the plastic, replaced the ignition switch, installed a starter relay to deal with the Click-Start problem , tried to fix the odometer with new capacitors, but that worked for a while, then went blank again. Sorry for the rambling, I did most of this last fall when the tone started and the car his been garaged since then, so wondering if any of the repairs could have caused the bad ground or whatever it is.
Thanks in advance,
Thanks in advance,
Search for and download a copy of the wiring diagram book for your model year. Look at the pages that identify ground point locations and confirm the ones you disturbed during your dash R&R are in the proper locations.
I rarely drive the car and in going through this process I realized that I have no door chime/buzzer when the interior lights or headlights are left on. I'd just as soon disconnect the chime, any description of it would be great. Chat GPT says it's behind the driver's side kick panel. Poking around with a stethoscope I wasn't able to find the source of the sound, now I'm thinking it might be nearer the steering wheel, I'm stumped.
Is there any evidence that some sort of aftermarket security device was installed?
Check the engine bay side of the firewall to see if there is a random speaker anywhere there.
I believe the black CPU 2 unit may have a speaker in it, or one of the little black boxes in that area.
If you have the CPU 2 out, perhaps open it up to see if any part of the circuit board is corrupted.

After more research, I'm thinking that it's the CPU 2 board that contains the buzzer/chime. Apparently the capacitors leak and cause a number of gremlins with the chime, alarm system, low coolant warning etc. It's located behind the driver's foot panel. Just wondering if I can drive the car without the board to pu it back in the barn while I repair the board.

It may look expensive, but they are always in demand. Get this one, and sell yours after it is fixed.
