Thunk/Thud Noise : Diff ???

Looked at a 93 RX7 2 weeks ago and when we pulled out for the test drive we heard a "clunk" from what seemed the rear end

Went back tonight and the noise is now "clutch controlled"

As in when the clutch is in the noise goes away but once release its back, not as loud as the first drive but still there. When we pulled out to load it onto a trailer the noise was horrible. It felt like it was drivetrain, clutch or diff related.

The car is going to my shop to go up on the lift, I have worked on many models of vehicles including the vehicle Im looking at buying but never the drivetrain.

Any pointers?? I would love to buy the car for the price considering the price even If I parted it out I would make out ahead. But I would prefer to fix what ever the problem is and drive it rather than parting out

Any info is greatly apprecciated

either diff bushings or pillow ***** id guess. probably a combination of both.
its normal for these cars to clunk in the rear, especially with old bushings.

Is it normal for the noise to stop when the clutch is in?

The noise occurs at idle with the car not moving, so suspension is eliminated from the running IMO unless the pillows are 100% destroyed.

Ill get it up in the air this weekend (hopefully depending on 2 cars I have to finish at the shop)

Could be the throwout bearing, especially if the noise goes away with the clutch pedal in.
The bearing in mine would make some noise, and if loading in the trailer it didn't sound too good. Changed clutch plate and bearing a few months ago and that was the end of the noise.

I was thinking that but in my 1st gen when the TB went out it wasn't as obnoxiously loud.

I didn't get time to go get the car this past weekend so I have no update yet. Hopefully its something silly

I appreciate the responses
