Negative, no filter behind the dash. But you can always drop the dash and clean out any debris that are caught in the evaporator.

You can also use an evaporator cleaner every year or so.

e.g., http://www.autobarn.net/lubegard-hea...te=google_base

I dont think in cabin air filters became the norm until mid 2000s. I know all the Toyotas come with them now.

you wouldn't believe the rats nets I found in my evap box. Over the years stuff will just accumulate on those things just by the air circulation. Mine still worked though surprisingly enough.

If you open the system though, replace the filter dryer. It's the silver canister next to the battery and intercooler.

You don't have to remove the dash to get to the evap.

Please elaborate. How would you get to the evap. without removing the dash? My car was basically a barn find and it was covered with rat droppings in the engine bay so I am now thinking that I might need to clean a lot more than just the engine bay.

Psh, go all out and take everything out.

That way you won't regret not doing it when you had the chance.

The dash isn't that hard to get out. There's only 9 bolts holding it in place. The most difficult part is all the electrical connectors.

Remove glove box, disconnect the two refrigerant lines in the engine bay, disconnect the condensate drain tube, unplug the electrical connector for the thermoswitch, remove two nuts and the evaporator and its housing swing down and out from under the dash.

^^ what he said.

getting the evap out was surprisingly easy for how small this car is. a LOT of cars require removing the dash.

Either way, it's reasonable enough to assume that if there's rats nets in your evap, there's one in your heater core and blower motor.

That is why I suggested you remove all that stuff to get all of it at once; instead of realizing it later when you had just removed the evap.
