I hava 93 3rd Gen RX7 and I drove it earlier today and when I got home the Tail lights stayed on after I shut the car off. I turned the lights on and then back off, drove the car around fora bit, disconnected the battery and re connected it, and all my other lights and stuff are turned off. My lights are off, the inside lamp lights are off, and I checked all the fuses under the hood and none of them are blown, idk about any control modules. So anyone have any ideas or help? thx
this happen to me and i found out what it was... ok your going to have to go under where the brake pedal is and i cant remeber how it looks like but there is a button as to when the brake is pressed it releases the button making the lights turn on... there is like a plastic piece that is attached to the break that presses it and it most likely broke off like mine.. i just used a bolt or screw as a replacement.... sorry if it doesnt make sence i tried
Thx guys. It was the brake light switch. I took your advice and glued a nickel up under there. Works great. Only cost 5 cents. Sweet deal. Mazda prolly would charge like 5 bucks for the stupid little rubber piece that broke.
Figured I'd add pictures to this very old post as this just happened to me - battery died spontaneously and new debris in the driver's footwell led me here. I should have known from the clutch one years ago and suggest for everyone to proactively check both of these plastic buttons before you get stuck with a dead battery or not being able to start it because it can't read that the clutch is depressed. I'm not sure I'd trust glue as the last poster but I just zip-tied a washer there (pulled it tight at the 12 o'clock position of the hole and washer).
spontaneous debris spring switch poking through the hole easy washer fix check the clutch one while you're down there - if that didn't already go first
I recommend using something softer - I use stick-on rubber chair feet from the hardware store. You can also get OEM rubber stops, I remember someone posting about a Nissan part that worked great.
The metal on plastic contact over time could wear down or break the end of the switch. There's a reason Mazda used a rubber pad - would have been cheaper to just not have a hole in the pedal and have the plunger hit the metal.
just go to your local nissan dealer and pick them up, The list price at the dealer is cheaper than what you can get them for online from ebay or amazon or other venue if you add in the shipping and what not
For future reference if anyone has this issue , you can get it at autozone as well if youre like me and dont like to wait lol.
I bought a kit they have there that comes with two pieces and it fits perfect.
