Unhappy Tachometer Problems (FD)

everytime i start up the car, my tach automatically starts to jump all over the place....all of the other gauges are normal

the tach will NEVER stay still even when im driving the tach just keeps jumping all around the place.....so now im scared to drive the car becuz i have no tach and no clue at what RPM i am at.....please help me

Take the gages out and check the solder joints, or find a shop that works on speedos and tachs.

should i just go to the dealer and have them look at it?

i know the dealer is the last place, but i cant find anywhere that does tachs....and i dont want to install something new

I had the exact same problem several years ago. I brought it to the dealer under warranty and they called it "unrepairable". It was replaced under warranty and was around $900 as I remember...

I've heard the same information about solder joints that duboisr mentions above. Mine appeared like a short, as the tach only got a signal some of the time, so this sounds reasonable.
