strengthening passenger side door handle...

Has anyone found a good technique for reinforcing the horribly engineered passenger door handle?

SpoolinRX 02-11-04 09:00 PM

Do you mean the inside handle? I have herd you can put a screw thru it if you take off the door panel.

scratchjunkie 02-11-04 09:06 PM

maybe unorthodox, but passengers you should always open and close the door for the lady. if its a male passenger, crack the window and close the door holding the top side.

mad_7tist 02-11-04 09:10 PM

yea it suks. the vert handel is the wost designed thing on the car. f-ing plastic hollow door pull! only thing keeping the door alive is its like 2 lbs. i would love a good post about this. anyone got creative? JB weld? lol

wanklin 02-11-04 09:13 PM

I've considered filling the handle with strengthening material but I'm not sure what I would use...

take the door panel off. Take 2 wood screws and screw one at the top, and one at the bottom.

I have been thinking about trying carbonfiberparts.net. It looks to be pretty expensive but sounds like it would be a lot stronger and look a lot better if it was covered in carbon fiber. Just a thought.

Ah the beauty of the search function. Greak link as always Mahjik!

Mine is busted and Rich at Gotham Racing said that Ihor there can fix it and I think it cost like 150 bucks or something like that. I havent seen one done yet but if its anything like the rest of their work it will be incredible. Im getting mine fixed there soon. Just so you know the 94 handles which were reinforced to buy from mazda are like 376 bucks or something sick like that. So call up Gotham and see how much it is going to cost if you wanna pay someone to do it. Everyone knows they do good work.

good info, thank you

im about to try that

DamonB 02-12-04 11:17 AM

My fix here

jamesuncw 02-12-04 01:09 PM

Anybody know what size the bolt that goes in the bottom of the actual grip it self is, as well as the bolt that holds the door lever tray?

Thanks!

Beat me too it Mahjik!

Mine is still holding up ok, it's a little bit loose. I'll probably take it apart sometime this winter and gob JB Weld onto it.

wanklin 02-12-04 04:42 PM

does anyone have pics of the DamonB technique?

LOL

yeah...covering a part in CF is going to make it sooo much stronger! Just covering it isnt going to do anyting.

My handle broke. I used JB weld and it has held fine for 6 months.

jamesuncw 02-12-04 07:16 PM

wanklin, i started to do it today but lost some bolts, if I get my digi cam back and i finish it ill try and take some pics for ya.

TurboFD 02-12-04 07:48 PM

could someone please explain exactly what it is about the handel that breaks. Being that I don't actually own a RX-7 the parts of the car I'm familiar with are not the doorhandels.

wanklin 02-12-04 08:54 PM

thanks Jamessuncw, pics would be great.

jamesuncw 02-12-04 10:01 PM

Well between school, work and moving out I can't take pics tommorow, if you have the metal strapping and a screw to put in the handle its easy. Once you take the door apart it will all fall into place, also you can check the FSM online it has some diagrams which will help, if you want i can maybe photoshop something lol
