Strange engine problem
Strange engine problem
Freshly rebuilt engine just went into the car last week. After being installed, the engine starts and idles beautifully. I drive it around the block (it was in my back driveway from the alley) and park it in front of the house. Still running/idleing beautifully, absolutely no problems. The next day, I go to start it, and it sounds like it's running on one rotor after it idles normally for a few seconds. I don't have much time to look at it that day so I leave it, and go back to it the next day. The next day I start it and it cranks, but does not want to turn over at all.
I checked for spark which is good, I know that I have fuel, and I even pulled the plugs and audibly checked the compression to make sure nothing went crazy with the motor. Everything seems to be in order. I checked the ground on the engine block. I even sprayed a grip of that engine starting fluid directly into the throttle body while trying to start it, and it didn't even TRY to start. That stuff usually will start an engine even with no fuel going through it as long as there's spark. Stumped! Anybody have any suggestions/things to look at?

Most likely it's flooded, new engines love to flood until they build up more compression.
If it's really being a pain, get a NEW set of leading plugs and pop them in. Flooded engines can foul plugs out too - they will look clean and fine, but have a weak spark.

agree with dale, and i'll add that you should warm it up and reset the idle speed, and check the TPS voltages. the TPS does weird things if it isn't right.
