Starting Problem.

Heres the story:

Went out to parking lot got in her she started up fine. Pulled her into the hangar and shut it down, changed out my I/C couplings to silicone ones.

Went to start her back up and all I get is a solenoid Click.

Banged on the starter a bit.

Still all I get is a click from the solenoid.

Ended up having to push start her and pop 2nd..she started right up.

got home parked it.

shut it down, tried to start it again all I got was a click.

Checked battery terminals the positive side was rather loose , so I hooked up jumper cables to my other car and tried to start her, still just a click .

So that ruled out the loose cable.

Now my question is ..would it be the starter thats bad or the solenoid...or what fuses should I check

Thanks

PS anyone got a manual starter they can sell me :)

check if there is power at the starter, if there is power then it could be the contact's inside the starter. don't buy a new starter just get it rebuilt, it's really cheap. But i would change the contact's first before getting it rebuilt.

just recently there was soemone with the same issue, https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/turn-key-click-click-click-searched-well-402843/

read thru that post, its got good info

the most relevent being checking the

battery
starter
clutch switch
shorted ground
ignition switch

oh ya forgot about clutch switch if the car is a manual 5sp. damm gotta remember that one.

Nick13B Mar 13, 2005 07:06 AM

Is the clutch switch located by the fuse box on the drivers side?

Is it a relay of some sort?

Nick13B Mar 13, 2005 07:10 AM

and if my clutch switch was bad would I still get a click on the starter solenoid?

bolo_fd Mar 13, 2005 07:37 AM

its not the clutch switch i just remembered u wont get a click if switch is bad and i believe the switch is located behind the clutch pedal.

And as for the loose terminal on the battery....wouldn't hooking jumper cables directly to the terminals on the negative and positive wires take the loose connection problem out of the picture.

I read through the thread you linked me too ....if my ignition switch in the steering column was indeed bad, would I still get a click on the starter solenoid?

bolo_fd Mar 13, 2005 08:01 AM

u wouldn't get a click from a bad clutch or ignition switch. reason i asked u to check the power at the starter is because power is drawn directly from the battery. so if there is no current there the starter will give u a click but will not crank.

bolo_fd Mar 13, 2005 08:05 AM

did u check the main fuse? It's on the fuse block that is conected to the batt.

Nick13B Mar 13, 2005 08:37 AM

If the main fuse was blown I would not get any dummie lights or power to the solenoid to hear the click

I just printed out the whole online shop manual..I plan on troubleshooting it today as long as there is a free parking spot around my rx7 so I can jump it haha...this really pisses me off because I havent been able to find out if my secondary boost problem has been fixed, because i havent been able to drive the thing
