Somone please tell me why my starter isnt even engaging?

Everything else on my car runs GREAT, when I push start the car it drives perfect. But I just cant turn the car on with the ignition, the starter just wont work... it dose nothing when i turn the key, NOTHING... Whats the deal here guys

TpCpLaYa 04-03-04 12:39 AM

it does nothing? no click or clicks? Are all the lights coming on?

spoolage 04-03-04 12:41 AM

yea, lights come on..... everything functions as it should, but when I turn the ignition all the way to fire her up, nothing happens. the starter dosent even turn, no noise from it, like its dead or the connection is dead =(

DrunkenBowler 04-03-04 12:50 AM

Check your wiring to the starter. That could be bad. Or it could be a bad relay. Or, the starter could just be dead. The little sprocket could be busted. Well, I don't know wat i'm talkin' about.

GoRacer 04-03-04 01:11 AM

If you can pull the starter out, take it to your local auto parts store for free testing. After eliminating that then test power to starter, relays, fuses and lastly the starter (key) switch itself could be bad but I don't know of any way to test it so eliminate everything else. Are you sure the alternating is recharging the battery? Did you test for min of 11volts?

skunks 04-03-04 01:33 AM

do the starter button mod illustrated at iluvmyrx7.com to get it going if after testing the starter, the starter is still good.

P.S. unhook battery befroe removing starter, you could jump your starter that way and run yourself over (i almsot did :))

dclin 04-03-04 12:17 PM

Crawl underneath and make sure that the power and ground going to the starter is clean and tighten. I had just a bit of wiggle in one of the wires, and it did the same thing.

spoolage 04-03-04 12:36 PM

I'm almost convinced its not the starter...

Its the ignition switch I think, or the clutch switch...

How can i fix these???

Is there any way I can like... jump the ignition switch?

mad_7tist 04-03-04 02:01 PM

pull the clutch switch and jump the terminals with a paper clip.

spoolage 04-03-04 02:07 PM

yea, explain to me how i jump the terminals... do i have to put th paper clip in both of the holes on both ends or just make a connection??

mad_7tist 04-03-04 02:24 PM

ok when you disconnect the harness some wires are going to the switch others are going to the car. take the connector on the car side of things and jump the 2 teminals together on the car side of the wiring. think of it as a loop

spoolage 04-03-04 05:59 PM

Okay,

I'm going to my g/f's but when I get back I'll attempt to bypass the clutch switch as instructed. Now, if this does not work and isnt successful at activating the starter, my next place to check is the ignition switch.

Now from what i've been reading, there is no way to really fix the ignition switch??? How do I fix the ignition switch??? hmmm

mad_7tist 04-03-04 06:02 PM

So you've checked it already then? It's the simplest thing to check, and you might as well start there if you have not already. Get underneath, undo the the nuts holding the two wires in place, sand/wire brush the contact area, and then tighten. If it's not that, then you can start throwing money at it replacing parts.

I had the exact same symptoms (everything worked, but absolutely nothing from the starter). Not saying that it's definitely your problem as well, but better then buying a new battery (a special ordered sealed Genesis no less @ $100) and then finding out that the loose wire was all it was.

mad_7tist 04-03-04 07:32 PM

/\ why would you just "buy" a new battery? have it load tested see if it is good.

911GT2 04-03-04 09:13 PM

Quick easy starter test: Crawl underneath car, hit starter with hammer. Hit it again. No, really hit it this time. Then try to start the car. If it works, your starter is on its way out. If it doesn't, try elsewhere.

Because I let it sit for a winter, and when I put my charger on it, the meter barely budged - and then jumped to conclusions like I'm trying to keep spoolage from doing. :) Turns out that my charger was bad.

Either I didnt do the clutch bypass trick correctly, or my ignition switch is fucked... I got a paper clip and connected the two whte male plastic pieces. I really dunno how the the hell to do it...

I see a wire that connects to a silver box at the top of the clutch pedal, and i disconnectd that, and then there is a larger male white connector that hooks up farther behind the clutch pedal, unhooked it and put a paper clip in one of its holes.... I dunno if this is right or not, somone please correct me?

How do you just the ignition switch?
