should my car be hard to drive slowley???

My FD seems to hate going slow, is that normal??

RxSeven1 02-23-04 12:01 AM

it goes as fast or slow as *you* want it to.

wix 02-23-04 12:01 AM

Perfectly normal, give her what she wants :D

jimlab 02-23-04 12:05 AM

Yes. The rotary engine produces almost no low-end torque to speak of... :D

need more detail..... if you mean it does not drive *smoothly* when slow, then that is a typical FD thing that can be mitigated by making sure idle setting are correct and that your bushings are healthy...but you can never escape the drivertrain slop :-(

That and the jerkiness of having a 14.28:1 final drive in first gear because the rotary engine has almost no low-end torque to speak of... :D

damian 02-23-04 02:55 AM

ahh yes, good point Jim....

FDNewbie 02-23-04 08:18 AM

Yea that's one thing I learned right off the bat...the car just is NOT smooth when you're just schmoozin along. 2nd gear is real jerky...and only way to really shift smooth is to shift @ higher revs...

PVerdieck 02-23-04 09:49 AM

The other thing is, are you talking about 2500-3000 rpm hesitation? That is an engine grounding issue.

Is the car bucking/pulsating at constant throtle in second gear. Some have fixed it with cleaning the stock grounding points and/or adding additional grounds.:) I'm sure there are other causes of this condition, but cleaning the stock grounds helped mine a bunch.

Tell me about it, I hate driving here in SoCal (traffic) with the car because it is so jerky when going slow unless I rev it up a little more.

clayne 02-23-04 03:13 PM

You guys need to oil your throttle cable or something, I don't have these super jerky light throttle issues.

Also, this is with solid diff mounts, pineapple 6 puck clutch, and jun 8.5 lb FW.

Actually I upgraded my stock ground w/ the one Pettit gives ya when you first order somethin from 'em...

But I was actually talking about 2nd gear being real jerky when you vary the amount of gas you give it...like slightly take your foot off the gas, and it'll jerk, and slightly apply gas again, and it'll jerk...

fd3s_rx7 02-24-04 02:08 AM

yeahh,
I notice that on my FD too.

The car just doesn't want to like to be driven slow... Too jerky compare to my bros. S14 and AE.

Check all ground. And even add some ground to it.. and still jerky.. Mostly on 2nd and 3rd only

FDNewbie 02-24-04 10:40 AM

Mine it's really focused in 2nd. And I never thought it was a problem, granted that if you read the Car & Driver 02/92 issue, the article called "Speeding Beauties" (http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/3rdgen/arti...0292/index.htm)
one of the main reasons why the rx7 was rated #2 behind the 300zx (#1) was "lurchy throttle response." they said "flow of power is a bit jerky when the throttle is first opened or closed, though"

and i think i read something very similar in a MT review of the same year... that basically the car didn't seem able to just be driven. it either stopped..or it WENT. not a cruising car lol
