Short shifters extinct?
So my shifter has awful play and I’m toying with the idea of getting a short shifter instead of getting all the bushings and the lower boot. But it seems like every short shifter is discontinued. With the exception of eBay knock offs. Does anyone know anything that’s left or any eBay knock offs that are good? I’m looking for something smooth like factory but with a little less throw. Not looking for crazy short I do like some throw. But most importantly I don’t want notchy, I like it to be smooth.

CUBE Speed makes one, but I have not used it so I cant comment on notchiness or shortness of throw

The cube is about as notchy as it gets, although VERY nice. I've installed 4 so far. What you're looking for may not exist. You can try out the re-a shifter. I think thats the closest you're going to get to what you're looking for.

The JP3 shifter is probably the best one on the market right now. It was designed after the discontinued Mazdaspeed shifter, which was probably the best one ever made.

I was looking at the JP3 but it's out of stock and quite pricey. I'd like to get one eventually but I'll probably have to focus on other parts of the car and just do a shifter rebuild for now.

OEM shifter in good condition with new bushings, etc is a perfectly fine way to go. I de-modded my 1995 from a B&M style lever installed by the PO to a rebuilt stocker, sooo much nicer/smoother/quieter and plenty short shifting.
All that said, the JP3 part looks pretty darn good too. |

Yep, just get new bushings and boots. HUGE difference, easy to do, and won't break the bank.
Most of the short shifters out there aren't great. The good ones are pricey or very hard to find. The ones that cost less (B&M) are crap IMHO - hard to find gears, way too stiff, etc. I've had people drive my car and gush over how awesome the shifter felt and it's just all stock with new bushings. The top boot is just to keep noise, things and heat out of the cabin right? Mine looks fine they seem to have stretched a boot over the top of the old destroyed one but it makes a pretty good seal.

There's a number of boots. This thread answers everything and shows what it should look like -

Short shifter is a good idea. After driving a MKIV supra, the FD shift throw feels pretty long, but wow $400 for a short shifter is really expensive.
|
Refreshed stock shifter, C's, or JP3/mazdaspeed shifter. Anything else is a waste of time and money IMO.

I was recommended an mx5 short shifter kit by a friend that's running one in his fd.
Fitted well and feels good. Haven't tested properly yet as my motor is currently out but it seems decent and you cannot knock the price. There is no FD tax on mx5 parts! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392222986889 |
Stock w/ new bushings > all
There are always trade offs. With short shifters, it's increased effort/notchiness. |
I have the JP3 and I really like it. Although I really don't remember what a stock shifter feels like anymore, it's been probably 15 years since I've had one. I tried the CUBE speed and it is nice, but very notchy. I thought I wanted notchy until I tried it, no thanks.
