Short Shifter

Hi,

I did a few searches, and I couldn't find the numbers I was looking for.

I'm trying to make a decision on a short shifter. I'm considering rx7store version, Petit racing, or C's.

Does anyone know what the shift reduction percentage is on a C's? I just read that it is specified as 25%, but that doesn't sound right to me; not for the price.

I've read (on rx7club), the Petit shifter has a 60% reduction and the rxstore shifter has a 50% reduction. Did I get this right?

Thanks guys,

C

RX7 RAGE 01-27-04 08:14 PM

I have the gotham racing STS and it is just like the C's.

Not sure what % but the Pettit short throw is crazy, I'm trying to get my hands on one.

rotaryhardcore 01-27-04 08:20 PM

Which would mean it's like the B & M, right?

So the C's isn't worth more than the other two.

The pettit and the rx7store are the same shifter. The B&M is 30% I think and Im not sure about the C's. Gothams is a knock off of the B&M.

Great info...

Anyone have a photo of a Petit/rx7store shifter installed? Of course I want the technical aspects of it; but for the money I want to make sure it looks the part too.

Actually there is a good thread on it from last week.

Mazdaspeed, C`s are the same......

B&M Is the only one I have seen thats different from all the rest, but also there is ANOTHER thread about it rattling, but some people swear its the best...

TwinTurbo93 01-27-04 09:48 PM

I recently installed the B&M short throw shifter and I'm very amazed on how much actualy that thing does shorten the throw, yet tightens the shifter I'd say 50% or more tighter than before,
I'm truly owned by this thing, never thought it would be such a difference from before.
I don't regret a penny spent on it...

talljosh85 01-27-04 10:54 PM

I'm running one from Gotham Racing and love it, I don't know about the others, but I would definently suggest it or another like it to any one even curious, if you don't like it, you can sell it and take a small loss.

cpa7man 01-27-04 11:08 PM

Good threads about the subject:

I like my Gotham, but my bushing has failed. I believe its the original factory bushing.

I have herd myths that short shifters can fuck up your tranny. Is that true?

Only if u shift mad fast and beat the syncros. The throw can be so short with some of the shifters that I've heard it can happen. I've never had a super short shifter. I seem to recall the issue being discussed in one of the threads I linked above.

vchacon 01-27-04 11:18 PM

Guys,

Pettit makes two short throw shifters with differing throw reduction. How can you tell them apart? Any pics?

The B&M works great for me. Its a little notchy when its cold outside. (11 degrees in STL right now)

fastcarfreak 01-27-04 11:39 PM

i have no regret from my b and m shifter. That was prolly one of the best mods ive done to my car. Its so stiff and smooth now. I love it. its almost impossible to misshift.

I use the B&M and like it, no problems.

CowsniperRX7 01-27-04 11:44 PM

I've noticed 2nd is harder to get into with the B&M than it used to be with the stock shifter(again might be the cold). But 3rd is a helluva lot eaiser.

I think the rumor was the shifter pivot point has changed and the shifts are actually more abrupt then stock. This was noticed at first, but I was always waiting for something to happen with my C`s, well 2 years later and a lot of racing and frucking around and no sychros no problems...

I have also had my engine torque brace almost 3 years so maybe that helps for synchros hummmm

apexkw 01-28-04 08:33 AM

yup i got my C's shifter from jt-imports over a year ago and i love it. smooth and crisp!!!

Seriously, I find the tork brace totaly useless, I installed it few months ago and don't seem to do anything exept for shaking at idle like a chain saw. :D

I think it depends how good your motor mounts are and how your tranny moves around. If everything is solid in you're car its not going to make a big difference. In my car with over 100,000 miles on it I'm sure it would make a big difference.

rotaryhardcore 01-28-04 10:16 AM

Thanks Mahjik for the photo, how far does the shaft extend into that shift knob?

Thanks everyone else for the info.

There's the difference in the shafts from the RX-7Store/Pettit and the stock shaft.

PalmTreeDoc 01-28-04 11:13 AM

Another satisfied B & M user here.

rotaryhardcore 01-28-04 11:46 AM

Anyone know which shaft is shorter? Petit or rx7store...I would assume the Petit one.

They are the same product. Read Jason's post on the first page.

RxSeven1 01-28-04 12:35 PM

Mahjik....what kind of shift knob is that? i love the aluminum knobs with either a cf center section or leather.

I don't think my motor mounts and other stuff are stiff anymore, 109K miles, she's an old lady now, :hah: still hanging pretty strong with the new compettitors.

That's the Razo CF Weighted shift knob.

RiON 01-28-04 02:39 PM

I love the mazda speed

FDNewbie 01-28-04 04:03 PM

I recall hearing that the B&M shortshifter comes w/ a 5th gear lockout mechanism when shiftin from 2nd to 3rd gear, thus making it impossible to break your 5th gear synchros...any truth to that?

user 9348703 01-28-04 06:13 PM

I didnt hear about that.

The only shifter I hear that does the lock-outs is the STILLWAY Shifter, THAT ONE IS AWESOME, if I upgrade or even change thats my next one.

rotaryhardcore 01-29-04 05:18 AM

Mahjik,

Sorry about the stupid...I misread the quote under the photo.

The photo certainly answered my question about the height, thanks a bunch.

-C

rotaryhardcore 01-29-04 05:30 AM

Stillway shifter,

Does the Stillway version sit (high) up on top of the console? The seq. shifters I've seen look like some kind of gremlin on the console.

-C

user 9348703 01-29-04 06:02 AM

No thats IKEYA your talking about rotaryhardcore.

The stillway is here
http://www.jt-imports.com/Stillwayshift.gif

rotaryhardcore 01-29-04 06:33 AM

That definitely looks a lot better.

I wish I could put my RX-8 knob on it, sort of stupid reason not to get one though.

-C

BoostCrzy 01-29-04 07:00 AM

stillway looks bad-ass!!...i have the pettit....no complaints here....throws are very short and precise...a little notchier than stock, but in a good way....action feels very thick and heavy witht the stock knob....

mad_7tist 01-29-04 11:30 AM

love the mazda speed in mine. definately better from 2 to 3rd

BRADYMAHONEY 01-29-04 12:09 PM

Went with B&M found it for only 159.00 shipped on e-bay. :)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEBWN%3AIT

user 9348703 01-29-04 05:21 PM

Stillway is the best, but $$

The reason is, short shifter combined with lock out. For example.....

in 1st it will only let you shift into 2nd, in 2nd it will only let you shift into 3rd and so on.... OF COURSE there is a bypass, just pull up on the lock and you can shift into any gear you want.

rotaryhardcore 01-29-04 08:46 PM

Anyone have a picture of the Stillway installed in an FD? Just curious as to how bad-as* it looks...

-C

RxSeven1 01-30-04 12:10 AM

so will cutting and
rethreading the stock shifter lower provide any noticable differnence or just bling bling factor?

user 9348703 01-30-04 01:38 AM

Pivot points change in short shifters.

BoostCrzy 01-30-04 10:59 AM

cutting will lower the shift knob...but will not shorten the actuating throw....as said, the pivot point of a "short shifter" is higher up on the shaft, thus creating less leverage but shorter throws to accomplish the shift....

BoostCrzy 01-30-04 11:01 AM

JT---can you get the stillway shifter???...if so how much?$$$....lol..
