Shift Knob Install

Ok so I am trying to install my RX-8 5speed shift knob I just got from the UK and I went out to my car and screwed it on and man it looks rediculous sitting so high. I have heard you put tape on the shaft and the boot wont slide down but I figured I would make an install write up with pics. I need to know the size thread maker or just what size of nut that fits on the threads.

thanks

mike

the shift boot should have a plastic collar which keeps it up high. No need to tape anything. I have that knob and it fits perfectly

yea but it is way to high for my taste. i want it lower. so i want to make more threads and cut off about a half inch of the shifter shaft

is this how yours looks? I can take a side pix if you want...

i have that knob, i took out the shifter and cut an inch off, threaded it with a tap and die and screwed the new one on.

My thoughts exactly on it sitting so high, I asked Bill about his and to my surprise its a stock shaft. :) Although in his picture it looks as though it sits lower than normal.

felix_is_alive 03-26-07 06:34 PM

BTW .....your`e interior looks so clean wow

BillM 03-26-07 06:38 PM

the shifter is shown in the neutral position. I just screwed it on as far as it would go...the car is stock with 36K on the odo.

the higher your shifter is sitting the longer throw u are gonna have between gears......meaning longer shifts
