seal problem

hi guys,

i want to buy a FD Rx7 and get rid of my S14 Sr20DET. 2 completely different engines. on the one i am looking for the seal (i hope this is the correct term, the guy who sells it says its comparable to the cylinder head gasket) are broken.

how difficult, expensive is the repair? spare parts?

thanks for your answers and help

I assume he is talking about the water seals, which will require a rebuild. unless he is selling it cheap i would bother. Just my $.02

When he says rebuild, he means a full engine rebuild. The number of parts to replace varies quite a bit. I'm not sure what the costs would be in Germany, but here in the states it's a 3-5k job minimum.

3-4k in the US? then i guess its around 4-5k € in Germany

maybe its better not to buy this car... better to wait until one with no engine problems is available? the car is cheap, thats the only point (about 10 000$), but if i have to pay 4000 or 5000€ for repair, then in the end i can buy a FD in good conditions without engine damage

what would u suggest?

It's up to you. If you want a project car it could work out well. But for a first FD I think this is making life more difficult than necessary. I would shop for one in good working condition.

Plus, owners who don't fix an engine with bad seals tend to leave many other things unfixed. So project cars usually end up being more work for the same cost, or worse.

Probably an apex seal.
Rebuilding is the only way to fix it. I's still a good trade for the s14, though. Once the engine's rebuilt, you'll have a nice FD. I'll bet they're not too common in your hometown, eh?

that would be the good thing. they are really rare and exclusive especially the biturbo from japan (268hp)

but i think i ll leave this one. thanks for the answers. i see if a good one comes up some time. until then i ll have to go on with my S14 with the piston engine

i also think that if this one thing is wrong with the engine, and he doesnt want to repair it (says he is student and no money for repair, but looking for S14). maybe he knows that the prie for repair is like 5000€ and he wants to get rid of it quickly
