Reviving a forgotten 95 FD from a field...

I found a 95 rx-7 in a field about a week ago. bought it and have done the basics to get it going but im running into a major issue!

Ive changed/ replaced
-oil/and filter
-coolant
-fuel filter (retarded)
-spark plugs
-wires

NOW THE PROBLEM
the car idles great! but when you press the gas it spudders and wants to die. what could be the problems

thank you for your help

Narfle 09-16-11 03:18 AM

Map sensor or TPS no work.
Might want to replace the 02 sensor while you're at it.

efinimazda 09-16-11 03:33 AM

pics!

gotboost88 09-16-11 04:12 AM

where do i find the map sensor or tps?

Narfle 09-16-11 04:25 AM

the map sensor is on the firewall behind the throttle body. Should have a rubber hose and a vapor filter attached.

This will help you immensely:

gotboost88 09-16-11 04:31 AM

how do i know if its bad or how do i fix it?

OKI92FD 09-16-11 04:44 AM

How long does it idle great, and whats the idle rpm? Also what do you mean when you say press the gas? Immediately sputters? Sputters at 3000rpm? 6000 rpm?

Fill us in with more details if you can.

sngl13b 09-16-11 04:48 AM

depending how long it has sat for i would replace the gas

MazdaSpeedDan 09-16-11 06:48 AM

Replace gas, Make sure TPS is dialed in. Double tap the engine bay and look for anything unplugged or missing.

Slevin_FD 09-16-11 07:51 AM

Well I'll be damned. Good find. I think your the first with a barn find FD.

Fortune_Seven 09-16-11 12:05 PM

Pics??

gotboost88 09-16-11 12:26 PM

sat for 11 years- already replaced the gas with a cleaner and octane booster

so when i pressed very lightly on the gas maybe 1/8 down go to 4k and start to spudder and cut out

IF I press 1/4 down or more like 1/2 or to the floor it immedietaly spudders out wanting to die.

looked really well in the engine bay nothing is unplugged . dont know if anything is missing first rotary

gotboost88 09-16-11 02:08 PM

so ran the codes and it came back as the Fuel Thermosensor ....does this sound like it could be the problem .......where is it located cant find anything on that

gotboost88 09-16-11 03:24 PM

called the dealer ...they say there is no such thing as a fuel thermosensor!!!!!!! someone please help

gotboost88 09-16-11 03:41 PM

nevermind ive been reading the dam code wrong like a retard .....13 not 23 .... so 13 is intake pressure sensor

NoPis10 09-16-11 03:44 PM

Sounds like the vacum line for the TPS is off or broken...

Fuel Thermosensor... lol...

just curious, the guy who owned the farm where you bought the car, did you ask him what was wrong with the engine?

RotaryEvolution 09-16-11 04:48 PM

if all it needs is a map sensor hose, you should go punch the PO in the nether region for neglecting a rarer sports car.

7dust 09-16-11 05:02 PM

There is a fuel temperature thermosensor on a stock FD. Its in the secondary fuel rail.

Anyhoo, as far as the sputtering, maybe the car is in limp mode. Reset it and see?

Sometimes when I don't mow my grass its like *I* find an FD forgotten in a field. Of course its just MY FD but oh well.

KaiFD3S 09-16-11 05:21 PM

Yup the sensor is on the secondary stock rail, sits in the middle of it...

If its in Limp mode it wont just die, it just wont let you WOT past 4k, you can easy slowly past 4k in lower gears but it will not let you go past 4k if you are cruising on the highway.

Funkspectrum 09-16-11 06:28 PM

I vote MAP sensor.

rx7rcer09 09-16-11 08:18 PM

im going with the map sensor...

Blue1986 09-16-11 09:27 PM

who sends an FD to a feild? morons, hope you get it up and running. Nice save

gotboost88 09-16-11 10:27 PM

put a new map sensor in still the same problem. just sitting at iddle i can slowly press the peddle and go all the way through the rpms.... but if i press the peddle more than a 1/4 of the way down it spudders and wants to die .....

ill check the hose i suppose lol

gotboost88 09-16-11 10:37 PM

ok replaced the map sensor . still have the same problem .... ( i replaced it with a used one tho that i got from a local fd shop))

if i very very slowly press the gas peddle down i can go through the rpms

if i press more than a 1/4 down it spudders and wants to die

im getting frustrated guys

just to make sure to reset it you disconnect the battery for 20 seconds then reconnect it with the brake peddle depressed ???? correct?

or is there a different way to reset the ecu?

gotboost88 09-16-11 10:44 PM

also i just looked in my intake pipes and found oil residue ......one of my turbos blown??? causing the problem?

S14-13B 09-16-11 10:50 PM

PICS!! please

Gomez 09-16-11 11:38 PM

Fuel starvation. Blocked filter.

gotboost88 09-16-11 11:44 PM

installed a new filter

turboIIrotary 09-16-11 11:46 PM

replace all vacuum lines

Fortune_Seven 09-16-11 11:53 PM

pics or video lets go!

gotboost88 09-17-11 12:17 AM

i dont have a camera ill see what i can do tho

Blue1986 09-17-11 12:53 AM

Ok, Im not very familiar with rotaries, but when we have that problem in a lot of our other track cars, its usually the TPS(throttle position sensor), does the FD system have a similar unit?

Narfle 09-17-11 01:05 AM

Dude, it sat in a field for 11 years.
All the rubber vacuum lines are probably shot.
It may have been parked because the motor blew.
Any fuel in the lines when it was parked is now varnish.

The chances of you resurrecting an fd out of a field, and it just up and running are.....daunting.
Don't get frustrated. Take your time. This is a rescue mission.

gotboost88 09-17-11 01:06 AM

yes i replaced it with a used one from a local fd shop

ahhhhhh someone fix my car!

OKI92FD 09-17-11 03:15 AM

You probably already know this but hey, maybe not. The tps requires an adjustment to work properly. Did you adjust the new one or just slap it on there? Have you tested the tps with a multimeter? It's pretty easy. Actually really easy. Do this and post values from the test. Long shot here but have you checked the air filter?

What part of Seattle are you from? I lived there from 06 to 09. Nice area.

gotboost88 09-17-11 10:13 AM

im an idiot yet again....... i replaced the MAP SENSOR not the tps sensor

been tired and miss typed that sorry

I agree, I think before you spend any more time and money, I suggest you do a compression test. It's free and easy. Follow this link as a reference

Reno_NVFD 09-17-11 11:01 AM

Saw your post about calling the dealer and them not knowing what that part was. I suggest call Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda, he knows the FD and usually has parts in stock and you get a discount. Don't get frustrated on the FD once you get it running right it will be worth it. The forum is great lots of good people and good info be patient and do it right.

I almost forgot Ray's number 703-490-8170. The dealrship is on the east coast so remember the time difference and just call and ask for Ray.

RotaryEvolution 09-17-11 04:38 PM

well by MAP sensor i didn't mean it was the actual sensor failed, they rarely fail.

but the line tends to pop off, the filter screen could be blocked not allowing flow through the line and last but not least... the LF wheel has a tendency when near bottoming out to rub on the front main harness which has the MAP sensor wiring in it. look in the driver's front fender well for any munched wiring.

since it's throwing a code, i'm leaning more towards the latter, which will ground out the sensor wiring and toss the code. otherwise be sure you reset the codes by disconnecting the battery after swapping the map sensor, the code just doesn't automatically clear itself on these computers like the earlier models did.

gotboost88 09-17-11 08:18 PM

adjusted the tps to perfect readings.....just reseting the ecu now waiting to see if the problem goes away wish me luck

If you give up and can't fix it i'll buy it, I'm local lol. (seriously PM me if you don't want it)

As stated change the fuel filter.

Is that code still popping up?

gotboost88 09-17-11 08:45 PM

already changed the fuel filter.....

can someone send me a link to a picture of where the fuel injectors are

gotboost88 09-17-11 10:22 PM

re calibrated the tps . reset the ecu ... problem is still there

while i press on the gas it pops and spudders and wants to die... ahhhhhhhhh

any good fd shops to go get it fixed at ?????

if someone can tell me where the fuel injectors are ill try those last then im spent

adamrs80 09-17-11 10:51 PM

The fuel injectors are buried under a lot of other items. Basically you're going to have to remove everything that is on the top of the engine. You really need a factory service manual or some photographs to go about getting to them. While you're at it if you're serious about owning and enjoying this car, you either need to replace the fuel pulsation damper or do the Banzai Racing FPD elimination. I have done it with great success as have many others. If you're going to get to the fuel injectors you will probably have to fix some or replace all of the vacuum hoses. Here is plenty of information.

Fuel pump might be on the way out.

Jumper the fuel pump on at high speed inside the diagnostic port to see if it helps at all. Even a slight improvement would indicate to me to swap the pump.

Japan2LA 09-18-11 11:20 AM

Bad OMP will cause same symptons..

I say reset it and re-read the codes again...

If you dont have patients, then pay a pro to work the bugs out for you
