Replacement Rear View Mirror?
Has anyone replaced their RVM with anything other than the stock unit? Mine is starting to fade around the edges and the pivot ball is loose, so when it's warm out, it will droop down.
|
Mine drooped too years ago when it was hot. I replaced it with a used one. Any mirror would work you may just have to glue a new mount on the glass as well.
I tried to pry open the old mirror and somehow shim the pivot ball but I could see no way of getting it open without breaking the glass. |
getting the stock mount off the glass is impossible i think. Luckily it has threaded holes so its easy to mount something to it. I made an adapater from the stock mount to a ford clip on mount, and got a mirror from the junkyard for $5 which has 2 pivots, so now I can adjust the mirror height as well.

I have one from Tahoe. external temp gauge, compass, and auto dim. Had this one for about 2 - 2.5 years now.. Taking the metal tab was PIA. I used thin metal wires and cut it out.
|
It is actually very easy to tighten it up so it doesn't droop. My last 2 FDs have had the same problem and I fixed it by tightening the screws that hold the mirror to the metal tab. Removing that metal tab is a PIA, but is unnecessary (iirc) if all you are looking to do is tighten it up.
herblenny might be onto something though. sounds pretty cool. |
^ We're talking about the pivot inside the case of the mirror itself.
|
A local friend of mine has an FD and uses a mirror with the HomeLink system. It has outside/inside temp, compass, garage opener, and 2 additional buttons that control house and garage lighting. The lighting on the buttons is amber, and it matches the FD interior very well. Extremely neat! I'll have to ask him where he got the mirror.
Also, there is a small writeup on the Robinette website on how to raise your rearview mirror: http://www.robrobinette.com/raisemirror.htm. I highly recommend this! -Rob |

Didn't the Turbo Miata have a colored Mazdaspeed rear view mirror? That might be worth considering.

Any update? I know this is an old thread.
Has anyone found a mirror that will mount to the base of the OEM FD mirror so you don't have to take it off and glue a new one on? |
I believe the Miata one does which is probably the same as the RX8 one. I could have sworn that I had met somebody some years ago who said he had switched in one from a Miata or had installed the Mazdaspeed one for the Miata.
I'm getting old and forgetting too much stuff... |
my mirror rattles and shift on the pivot ball inside the crappy plastic part of the mirror, any updates or info on this?
|
I was wondering if anyone's swapped in a 99spec mirror...I've been wanting to replace mine with a 99spec.
|
is there even a difference?

'93-94 correct mirror for sale
I have a new condition 93-94 RX7 mirror that I would sell for $35 plus shipping costs. The '95 has a different base and actually is a different shape. PM me if interested.

There are 2 different part numbers in use for rear view mirror, depending on the year of the FD:
1993-1994 - HG3169220C 1995 and later - HG8269220B Mounting bases for these are different, so, unfortunately, they are not compatible. |
Here's my writeup on using the newer style adjustable height mirror -
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-easy-1111316/ I LOVE mine. I drove an FD with a stock mirror and really noticed the difference. Dale |
I got a new standard mirror from Atkins, and it was nice to clear up the fading or cracking the creeps on the mirror edges. Nothing like NOS for my OCD.

FYI the upgraded mirror was used on a bunch of Mazdas so it's available easily and cheaply, like $30 or so. The mirror tab that glues to the window is like $6 or something.

Hi Dale, can you provide a link or two about the mirror you are talking about?

My thread linked up top has the part number for the mirror I'm using, you can get it from Amazon, Ray, most anywhere you like.
Also in the thread, the OEM mirror mount is glued to the windshield. I used a heat gun to soften the glue and remove the mount. Glued the new mount on and good to go. It's been on there for 2+ years now with no problems. Dale |
If anyone is interested in more modern features like auto dimming and home link buttons for your garage door you can retrofit and still keep a stock/clean look. I just did it on mine. Copy and pasted from my build thread. Here's the link to the mirror I used. As stated in my build thread, you have to heat up the trim piece that runs up the windshield to get it to curve to the windshield right but that's about it.

I'm a fan of HomeLink; big time. I HATE having janky remotes in my car because they tend to rattle and it drives me up a wall. Thus, I needed an elegant solution. I'd come from a 2017 Golf R that I had to install an OEM VW Homelink mirror in (yes, a $40k car that doesn't come with Homelink) and remembered how much I liked that solution. Only needs two wires for hookup and it's auto dimming too. Brilliant. So while the glass was out I had the guy glue this one on and I did all the wiring. Easy as pie. It looks OEM, doesn't blind me at night, and no rattling remotes to be found!

Those fancy mirrors are pretty cool. I guess I'm a luddite, and I can't bring myself to put a stereo in my horse and buggy.

If you can get your grubby paws on a mirror from a Mazdaspeed Miata, it'll have a carbon fiber looking cover that says Mazdaspeed on it. That's gotta be good for a couple horsepower.
Here's a link to an orange cover, but they came in every color the MSM was offered in. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mazda-Miata...-/132494895879 |
