Removed the R1 wing and I think I like it
I had been thinking about taking off the R1 wing to see how it would look and I think I might keep it off. I found these little rubber plugs for the holes for now just incase I decide to put it back on. There are a few trouble spots in the paint from where the wing came in contact with the hatch. Excuse the broken driver side tail light, had a bit of trouble the other day. (Let me know if you have an extra you'd like to get rid of) Also sorry about the photo quality of the new photos. I used my cell phone.

Looks nice. I never was a fan of the R1 wing.
What size and offset wheels did you fit under the pettit flare's? 18x13? |
Wow super clean! Those are some fat ass rims too, like 12" wide?

+2, Details on the rims please. They look HUGE! Also, could you post more pics of your engine bay. I really like the color scheme. Very unique and different. Props to you!

looks pretty bad ass
|
isn`t that the stock 3rd gen wing?......nice rims
|
isn`t that the stock 3rd gen wing? The car does look nice. I think now it looks even wider... |
It looks better without!
Your RB duals are just hanging there? |
looks better wingless!
|
i agree keep it off

Great looking car! I'm a fan of the wingless look (I have a touring model without the wing). The rear wheel flares look great, the whole car looks very clean. I also like the engine detail, matching it to the wheels looks great.

I don't care for any wings/spoilers on the FD. Much cleaner looking imo without anything back there.
|
I think it looks good either way. just out of curiousity, how much HP are you putting down to the wheels?
|
nice
|
please put a r1 lip on the front bumper

I'm sorry dude, but FD's look totally plain without a wing. It's almost as bad as a second gen without a wing...
|
you're nuts
the shape of an FD is the definition of sexy in the automotive world....it needs nothing....the wing and lip are just ricer cheese |
i vote for the rear wing
|
Personally I do not like wingless FD at all.
|
The only wing that I like is the 96 spec dolphin tail. Everything else just looks like crap. What bumper are you leaning towards? MS GTC or Origin, those are my votes.
|
I think I'm starting to agree with you. My BB use to have no wing http://armitage.crinkle.net/gallery/...1199.thumb.jpg but I put one on and now I'm starting to wish I hadn't cut all those holes in the deck. Really nice car you've got there!
|
I removed my wing for paint...and kind of like it (at certain angles)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...p/DSC06743.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...p/DSC06745.jpg I might remove the wing for good?? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/dubulup/car.jpg ^but this is hot! not so sure?? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...p/DSC06744.jpg |
R1 wing looks like crap? ricer cheese?
This thread is a perfect demonstration of the old 'opinions are like assholes' adage :D To the OP, I really like the color scheme and the flares, nice lookin' FD :icon_tup: |
I am with the majority on this one. It looks much better without the wing. Nice ride!!!
|
Nice car. I'm definitely for NO wing. I bought my car with a park bench on it, and ripped it off as soon as I got home. Love the clean wingless look.
From http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...lx/Profile.jpg to: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...rearangle3.jpg I even convinced my friend to take the OEM wing off his MR2. I'm just partial to the wingless look I guess. I do like the 99' spec wing though, that'd be the only one I'd put on my car. |
I've liked what you did with you car in the past and I like it without the wing now too.
|
Wings cover up the subtle and painstakingly modeled surfaces on the hatch which play into the rear lights in such a beautiful way. When my car got painted the wing came off and holes were welded shut! Wingless 4 Evar!
|
Depending on what you're doing with the car, some look good with a wing, some look good without. I personally like having a wing. I'm not for that duel tip exaust, looks like crap in the 5th pic.
|
I personally like the wingless look.... But that is also the way my car is, and will prolly stay.
I LOVE the engine bay. Looks incredible matched to the rims. Very unique with the gold. |
I'm more of a fan of having a wing, but that R1 wing looked really stupid with the wider rear fenders. So taking it off definitely makes the car look better and much wider. Sick black and gold color scheme on the body/rims/engine bay, absolutely love it!

if you need a wing, drive a Supra
;) |
I saw you had a Kansas plate so I checked the city and to my surprise, you're the other FD owner in Lawrence. You should come out to the spring rotary BBQ if it ends up happening.

i might be in lawrence sometime next weekend and would love to check the car out if at all possible... still not sure if im driving me seven up there or not...depends on weather and how much free time i have to work on it.
|
u guys forget that that wing serves a purpose other then looks.......it applies downforce to the rear of the car at high speeds aswell as channeling air across the back of the car....i bought my 7 for more then just looks......think about that before u take it off and wanna go do 100mph+

Totally agree here besides the looks i don''t think Mazda put the wing there for nothing. For me the car looks empty without a wing. |
Mazda's own aero test data shows that while the R1 lip decreases front lift, the rear wing does nothing at all.

The R1 wing is one of the best looking factory wings on any car ever. I much prefer it to the 99 wing for instance or the Supra TT wing, although a Supra is the only car that can actually pull off that style of wing.
