Charge Control Solenoid / Actuator issues

Hi All,


I was under the car today installing new sway bars and sway bar mounts when I noticed under the right side of the car just under the turbo housing a vacuum line that had cracked and is not making a seal. I don't know what this part is. Here is a picture.



It is the left most part and it is the top left most connection that has the vacuum hose that is not making a seal.

What ill effects will I notice because of this?

I also noticed a couple drops of oil hanging underneath waiting to fall. Not that bad but it can't be good. The only trouble I have with the car is a fair amount of white smoke on cold startups but the car drives fine otherwise. Maybe a little hesitation or less power than normal.

Do any local places carry silicone hoses or do I have to order them?

After my initial post someone had just posted their vacuum hose problems.

By looking at the links people sent I see the part is the "Charge Control Solenoid / Actuator".

Will I only have boost problems until I replace the hose or should I not drive the car?

Any suggestions on the white smoke at start up and traces of dripping oil underneath the turbos? I read another post that made it sound like my turbos have gone. Anyone agree?

I won't jump to conclusions, but it does sound like it could be your tubos.
If you are looking for a set to replace them, I have low mileage mint used turbos for sale for a good price.

the dripping oil is probably coming from the turbo's compressor housing seal....and the vaccum line should be replaced asap... its what controls the secondary turbo transition/spool....you can still drive the car like this...just try to stay away from full throttle....

And Thanks Boostczy, temporarily I was thinking about cutting about a half inch off the cracked tube and reconnecting it with another zip tie. There is a little excess tubing and I don't think it would stretch it at all.

The 2 actuators on the turbos shown are the Wastegate actuator, and the turbo PRE-control actuator.( the furthest left one u mention is the pre-control) The charge control actuator you maentioned is actuallt located on the Y-pipe, Towards the firewall. You will probably be having boost issues.( spikes or lack of boost)There is also 1 more actuator located on the very bottom of the turbos near the oil pan. This is the turbo control actuator.( I don't see it in your pic.) If you don't already have a boost gauge...Get one and see what boost issues you are haveing. First however replace that line that you see cracked. It may have a pill inside it depending on what year u have. This needs to be put in the new hose. Good luck! Hope this helped

94's on i believe the restrictor (pills) are in the turbo nipples themselves. The white smoke....where does it come from? Some smoke out the exhaust is normal. The turbos have 2 coolant lines that i'm sure you saw. Check those for leaks if it's from that area.

A little oil on the turbos is normal. There is almost always a drop hanging on the 2nd compressor housing on my car. It doesn't loose very much. The white smoke, if when the car is cold, could just be condensation in the exhaust. As long as you are not loosing lots of coolant, and don't get bubbles in the coolant, you probably have nothing to worry about. Fix the hose, and watch the boost on a boost gauge - 10-8-10 dropping to 8 or so at 7000 RPM is normal stock boost. Slight differences from this are acceptable (1 to 2 PSI), and can be caused by inaccurate gauges, better/poorer exhaust components, intakes, etc. Even the air temp. has a big effect on the boost.

Ok, here is an update. I haven't fixed the vacuum hose yet but will as soon as possible. I drove the car to a tennis match today and after I was done playing for about 3 hours I checked under the car. There wasn't traces of oil at all on the ground. I still have the plastic cover off the bottom of the car since I haven't finished the sway bars so I should have seen oil on the ground if there was some.

I still had the large amount of smoke on start up. And it may not be white, it isn't black, but it is kinda greyish. Although I did not have smoke when I started it after the tennis match. I normally only get it if the car has sat for a long period of time. Maybe 5 or 6 hours. Sometimes I will start it in the morning with smoke, go to a friends house all day and when I leave late at night I get the smoke again. But maybe it is a change in temperature since it is 2am and not a duration issue.

I also smell fuel. It smells like it is running very rich.

I tested my boost and I get basically 10-5-6 or 10-4-5 on the two runs I did. When I first step on the gas I get 9 but then over about a second it goes up to 10, then the above.
