RE-Amemiya Wing Spoiler Comparison: wet-carbon vs dry-carbon
 

Given there is very limited info on this Japanese gem even on RE-Amemiya website I figured I purchase both and share my discovery with the RX-7 community.
So here it goes...

Both wings are literally identical in shape and form. And both were ordered on the same day 11 months ago. The wet-carbon version arrived first and then I waited more to receive the dry version. Today it finally arrived from Japan.

Notice how the cost of shipping went up by 47.05% during 2022.

So $2,000 for 1.5lbs of weight savings. Fun to see them side by side, the dry does look cool. I wonder if there's a strength difference as well? The more epoxy used between the carbon, the weaker the part usually is. I say we test it, rx7club must know

Unfortunately, dry carbon is more complicated and time-consuming, so it’s typically reserved for very expensive parts designed for race teams. Dry carbon is also significantly stronger, as there are fewer irregularities compared to wet carbon and less resin used.

I remember when you purchased, did you ever get to install?

Understood on how dry can be a more solid element vs wet assuming solid chassis mount to chassis mount vs flexy rear hatch mount, but you'd need to be cutting to the bone with the low hanging weight loss fruit already sorted (seat, battery, lexan, wiring, carpet, diet, etc) to justify (from a performance perspective) a 1.5 pound weight savings against a $2,000 investment

I'm looking to buy this and respectfully disagree Zum. You'll have to excuse my purist oath (ha) but my jdm tuner car philosophy (which is all this boy racer hobby is at the end of the day) is all about building something loyal to the appropriate jdm style to serve as a homage / tribute to Japanese tuning culture. Let's not forget that one of the main and most important merits of JDM culture is style. So for me, there really isn't much more to it. It is what it is they say.

I know this concept isn't lost on you, but it's the whole 'add lightness' thing that increases every aspect of a vehicles' performance. Which is ultimately what Japanese auto makers have been striving for (and achieving with success for years!) up until this last decade or so; but it's not their fault the market has drastically changed priorities. My car is ultimately just a street car at the end of the day and you can only responsibly use so much power on the streets before putting life / property in danger. For me, the -2lbs savings is totally worth it because I personally am more about reducing weight as opposed to adding horsepower. It's the 'to each their own, the heart wants what it wants' cliché. Apparently I'm full of 'em today, ha :)

Damn, over 900 CAD for shipping. You could have almost flown to Chiba and taken them home in your luggage for that much...

This is about what I would have expected as for as the weight difference.. Significant, but not economically justifiable.
