RE Amemiya short shifter installed; PICS

Just got the shifter installed that I got for Christmas. Overall, the shifter feels as smooth as stock when going through the gears. I actually haven't been able to drive my 7 with it installed due to my engine rebuild project though. I took a picture of the shifters next to each other but will take some of both shifters installed when in first and second gear if anyone's interested.

And if anyone know's the reduction percentage for the RE Amemiya shifter, please enlighten me.

I felt my friend's RE shifter, and it pretty much just felt like stock. It might be like a 20% length reduction or so, but I know my Mazdaspeed and my other friends B/M were much shorter than the RE.

Get the RE Ball shift knob as well. It's a killer combo.

samiralfey 01-11-06 09:18 PM

Well, looking from that picture it looks(at least to me but hey! I don't know s**t) that the shifter is indeed shorter but the fulcrum point seems to be the same in both so the throw ratio between the top and bottom of the sticks are the same?! Please feel free to correct me.

fdeeznutz 01-11-06 09:22 PM

IMO, B&M short shifters feel horrible. I had one for a short time but I got rid of it. The shifts felt really vague to me, almost like not shifting at all. Kind of felt like pushing a stick into a clay bar.

The RX-7 Store shifter/Pettit/Mazdaspeed version for reference.

???? So quickfini, you are saying that this RE Amemiya does not have that short throw like the B&M and the other short shifter???? I just bought mine as well, but haven't install it. I will be really dissappointed to find out that it feels like stock...

Well, as you can see from the pic Mahjik posted that the fulcrum point is actually more up on the right shifter, therefore increasing the movement of the lower part while decreasing the movement of the upper part. RE-amemiya is just simply a shorter stick.

Try with a pen. Grab at the bottom of the pen and 'shift the gears'. Now grab the middle of pen and go through the' gears' again and see that the lower part moves more while the upper part of the pen moves less.

pfft i love mine :)

Stix37867 01-11-06 10:28 PM

I can slightly tell a difference between the two. When he says it feels like stock he means shifting wise. It's just a smooth. Most B&M's shifter can feel VERY notchy. If you are looking for a SHORT short shifter then you'll probably want to go with the one Mahjik shows in the picture. I wanted something that wasn't too radical and still felt like stock.

It took me about 10-15 minutes to install but I've done it before about 5 times (had to change the bottom plastic piece).

Quickfini 01-11-06 10:48 PM

Yeah, the RE throw is just about the same as stock.

If you want short, go with a B/M or Mazdaspeed. The B/M is much notchier than the Mazdaspeed. Depends on what style you prefer.

SRA-FD3S 01-11-06 11:36 PM

i have a mazdaspeed shifter for sale pm if interested

chopstix 01-11-06 11:37 PM

had mine on for a year now.. no problems.. but yeah..doesnt seem to be a huge difference on the feel.

fd3s_rx7 01-11-06 11:49 PM

damn... I can just cut my stock shifter and make it shorter than and call it RE Amemiya. lol..

FDNewbie 01-12-06 12:04 AM

Yea ppl often assume the RE one is super short. It's not. I've posted this several times, throughout the several for sale threads I had w/ the RE shifters. It's NOT considerably shorter; but it's INCREDIBLY smooth. If you want super short, get a B&M, but it's incredibly notchy. I have no experience w/ the Mazdaspeed shifter, but from this and other threads, it seems to be the middle ground. I remember I HATED my B&M when I first installed it, but now I can't live w/o it ;) It all depends on what you're looking for.

amp 01-12-06 12:51 AM

although smooth.. the RE is just a shorter column.. nothing more..
otherwise its exactly like stock.. REs definition of short is unfortunately literal..
the other SSKs reference to short is actually short throw..where its in the pivot and height.. not just height..
went with the mazdatrix and couldnt be any happier...

KaiFD3S 01-12-06 03:49 AM

I had the b&m too then sold it for a RE one, I was very dissapointed that it just felt like stock and sold....Back to the B&M again and will not replace it anymore...

clayne 01-12-06 06:30 AM

Should work alright. Personally I prefer the C's short shifter, however.

when the shifter is *too* short, it feels like crap. 20-30% reduction is nice for fd's.

Sorry! I missed this post. :( I still like it. I haven't put a ton of miles on it (and the car has been down for over a year), but it has tainted my view of every shifter on every other car now.

My dad's C5 Z06 felt like I was shifting a truck after driving my RX7. ;) So, I had to get him a B&M shifter for his car. :)

1QWIK7 03-13-06 09:13 PM

I have the B&M. Yes its a bit notchy but not noisy like people said it will be and i love how short the throws are. I dont know about you but im not a drag guy where i have to be shifting at a million miles an hour. The B&M prevents you from shifting fast since its notchy but i dont care. Even if you shift fast without overdoing it, its fast and short.

It's not the first time I hear bad comments about the B&M.

I have had a B&M for many years now and it's fine.

No problem. Based in part on your earlier posts, I bought a brand new PETTIT kit from another member and installed it a couple of weeks ago. I was impressed with the materials and construction, at least as good as OEM, which IMO is a little unusual for aftermarket stuff. Still getting used to it, but really like it. Especially when really winding up through the gears, like freeway on-ramps etc. Very cool.

Alcoholic 03-14-06 01:41 AM

what is the percentage of reduction in throw with the b&m and mazdaspeed shifters?

KaiFD3S 03-14-06 02:09 AM

about 50% to 60%

GUITARJUNKIE28 03-14-06 10:16 AM

i haven't used the amemiya yet, but i've used b&m, mazdaspeed, and maybe even a few others... the best feeling short shifter i've ever felt for the fd was a $19.99 ebay special :p:

GoRacer 03-14-06 02:16 PM

^omg, I have one of those. Will list it back on ebay for $2.50 to cover the $2.50 ebay fees. I even shaved down the ball to fit the metal cap on the bottom but it is still too clunky and notchy for my taste. Also the throw is too short for normal use. Good for drag or if you lazy shift with thumb and forefinger. It made the throw on the clutch pedal seem like ten feet long. I prefer quiet and smooth. I was suprised when I got my RE-A since only the stalk was shorter but it was smoother then OEM. I would like to compare with M'Trix and Pettit.

n87 03-14-06 03:32 PM

just installed my B&M last nite. wow. super short and really CLICKS into gear. i am just slightly worried i am gonna miss shift on the freeway from 5th to 2nd. yikes. i need to drive more on the B&M to decide.

GoRacer 03-14-06 03:56 PM

Yeah, if you have problems miss shifting then the B&M or ebay replica's may help since the "click" can be heard and felt. It takes a little effort for 5th gear. Just hit the right side before sliding upward. I still prefer the RE-A, so someone buy my replica.

the one i got is basically a b&m carbon copy, except the throw wasn't quite as short. it's really pleasant feeling.

Give the B&M a few weeks. It betters with time (break-in).

^ I have that (from different seller) but the end ball on the bottom I had that shaved to fit the aluminum cap thing I got from M'trix. The oem shifter has a plastic cap thing. I don't know if the original B&M uses a cap. RE-A version has a copper cap.

swif 12-25-06 01:34 PM

So I have the RE-a on order. I hope I like it. I was also thinking of the mazdaspeed shot shifter.

I stayed away from the B&M due to the fact that I heard that it is lound and clunkie. I also heard that the throw is too short. Meaning that the sincrows some times do not slow the gear down in time for when driver shifts to next gear.

Who else has the ms shifter? What do you think?

ArmenMAxx 02-28-08 04:31 PM

I have the mazdatrix ss. For some reason its kinda notchy.
