Question about Mud Guards
I was thinking about getting a set of OEM mud guards for my FD. I plan to run on the track at MADS and was thinking that the mud guards might cut down on the number of paint chips I will get, especially since I have a black car.
I'm just trying to get some opinions from various people as to whether putting the mud guards would help cut down on the number of chips I would get in my paint.

I've got mudguards on my 93 R1 because I auto-x a lot and the car see a couple thousand miles in the summer with R-compound tires on it.
I'd say mudguards will help in two respects, first it will prevent/hide the chipping that is bound to happen directly behind the wheels and second they will pretty much stop the front wheels from throwing rocks into the rocker panel in front of the rear wheels.
Also they have to be the best looking mudguards around. Not that the car looks much better with them, it just doesn't look much worse.

I have them on my '93 R-1 and I think they actually work really well and look good also. It was a factory option, but you just don't see many of them. I say go for it. What could it hurt. Better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.
I am surprised by the previous posts. I had some OEM mudguards but sold them bc they seem practically useless. They seem to be just for looks. They aren't big enough to stop any mud or rocks. I never put them on so if people are saying they work well, go for it. Take a look at the picture of it uninstalled though.

What picture uninstalled? Do they hurt the paint when you take them off? From what I understand, you need to bolt it on in one or two places and then place an adhesive strip on the mud guard in order to keep it on your car. Does the adhesive strip damage your paint or something?

www.mazdaformance.com has them. its not on their website, but if you call them its about $70 brand new painted per pair.
the are basically clipped on the car with 3 screws and adhesive tape. the adhesive tape really sucks, so i just took it off. it doesnt damage the car, it just didnt stick very well in hot weather.

Does anyone else know of a good place to get the mud guards? I would prefer to buy them brand new. Also, does anyone have pictures of the mudguards on a black FD? Thanks.

It seems that http://www.mazdaformance.com/ doesn't have them in black. I also checked http://www.mazdastuff.com/ and that guy didn't have a clue what was going on. He found the front mud guards, but not the rear. I don't think he had any idea that most of the warehouses stopped stocking them. At any rate. Can anyone help me out. Does anyone know where I can get a pair of mudguards? Preferrably in Black.
Got mine from the dealer several years ago, they keep the rock chips down on the sides, and don't look bad either.....Click here for pix the day after it was repainted
Pix #2 Last Month
They are hardly visible, yet work to keep the rocks off.

It's made of semi soft urethane or rubber. Pretty light. I got mine unpainted in black. I just spray painted it to match my color. It's screwed on in 3 places and use some 3M tape or clear caulking (not 100% silicon or it will be too hard to remove).
I was just saying that ppl should look at pix of mud flaps that isn't installed to realize that it may not protect your paint like other mud guards do. They are just for looks in my opinion. I think Mazdastuff.com and gallery mazda (in MA) sells them for like $70 a pair.

They work great go to www.mazdastuff.com it is $152.00 shipped and already painted to the color of your car, very easy to install it takes just 3 screw 2 in the bottom and one in the wheel well, it comes with all hardware, all you need is a screw driver..
I've got them on my car and I think they work very well. My previous RX-7 (a Turbo II) did not have any guards and the whole area behind the wheel was down to bare metal after a number of years...
Here's couple of pics to show you what they look like. I bought mine from Mazdastuff (http://www.mazdastuff.com/directory.cfm?CategoryID=81).
You can get them prepainted to match the factory colors.

I have the mudguards, and I really like them. They definitely keep the paint free of debris. Mine arrived painted to match my Chaste White paint.
I recommend getting them.
