Quality reverse glow gauges, no rice here!!!

http://www.s3designs.com/shop/images/colors2.jpg

I talked to the guy who made these gauges because I am buying a set for my VW. He said if I found 10 people interested and supplied a cluster that he could make a set for the RX-7. The gauges are back lit and the colors he offers are White, Red, Green, or Blue. For the VWs he offers 3 different style faces, a Ferrari look, OEM look, and Euro look.

http://www.s3designs.com/Site%20Images/S3-gauges_23.gif
http://www.s3designs.com/Site%20Images/S3-gauges_31.gif
I think he only does the black faces but I will ask about the white face. I think the black face will look a lot less ricey and very close to the stock setup.

With the VW buy in he required 65$ down and then 35$ after completion, I am assuming this will stay the same. I was thinking about finding a few different style faces like OEM, Ferrari look, maybe Spirit R/99 look???? Let me know if you guys have any other ideas. The rest at 6 o'clock is cool but I don't know if the RX-7 cluster will allow that. As far as the cluster my car is down, I could remove my cluster and send it... unless someone has a non-working cluster they wouldn't miss while he made the gauges.

Here are some of the his sites for further info:
http://www.s3designs.com/index.html
http://www.vwfixx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12804

Let me know if anyone is interested or has some ideas to put towards this.

Herblenny 07-26-04 09:52 AM

I'm very interested.. please let me know when these become available.. Also, can you take an angled shot??

Add me to your list!

BoOsTin FD 07-26-04 10:49 AM

What's the point of getting them black? If he had them in white I would be interested.

Amel

Hyperite 07-26-04 11:11 AM

Yeah, can't you just change the bulbs to change colors with our current gauges? Also would you give him a 93 or 95 cluster to model?

Hmm.. is that how it works?? or is it special film or some sort that goes on??

I'm interested in black.. kind of like black out gauge look..

It looks much better than several large glowing circles infront of your face. :)

vel525 07-26-04 11:52 AM

i would be interested. i actually had the white face reverse glow lay over, but the quality of the light was crappy so i took them off. i also have an extra gauge cluster laying around. keep us informed!!

tinfan82 07-26-04 12:09 PM

I'm down for one. I think these would look much better than those crappy indiglos.

TainoIndian 07-26-04 01:31 PM

wow

i just checked out the web page and these are nice. i would have to see them installed on a rx7 before i order them though...

so guys come on and buy them, 10 peeps come on!

Fd3BOOST 07-26-04 01:49 PM

You cannot just change the bulbs. The bulbs in fds are white, the actual gauges have a diffusion color painted on them that give the orange/amber color. I have played with the colors for the NR auto guages I have. Dclin had a post about it a while back which is where I got the idea. Anyway Chris I would be interested but only if he offers in white.

broken93 07-26-04 01:58 PM

I'd be interested in the white on black as well. They're quite a lot like the OEM 00+ Audi gauges, which are very nice on the eyes and look sweet too. I can loan my gauge cluster... my car won't be up for a while anyway.

sanfordman 07-26-04 02:30 PM

I would be in for the black faced ferrari style. Let me know-B

Wow thanks for all the quick interest guys. :bigthumb:

White face: I will email him tonight and check. White does have a sporty appearance but I think black is the cleanest look and the glow from the markings is less likely to bleed into the face. Either way I will ask, its good to have more options. Also like herb suggested, you could lightly spray on tint to darken the plastic covers thus making a black-out style cluster.

Hyperite: Yes you could but the lighting wouldn't be even. If you do look at the back of the stock gauges there is A-LOT of time put into spreading the light evenly across the gauge. This place can explain it better:

http://www.importintelligence.com/info.htm

but look at what they came up with for the 7 :puke:

So the people in so far... correct me if im wrong:

Almost there, once we reach 10 then I will break down as far as color & style.

prew 07-26-04 06:03 PM

i would get in on this as well. i would be interested in the style at the top left of the four.

as fd3boost said you cannot just change the bulbs to get this effect. the film behind the gauges is amber.

rx-7ml 07-26-04 07:19 PM

Oooo... these are just what I've been looking for. Shame I'm all the way in the UK :(

7-sins, I can wire the money your way if you fancy handling my order? :D

7racer 07-26-04 07:20 PM

how custom can you get??? can you make it this "silver" color found in the Spirit R?

http://www.akimitsu.net/rx-7-en/spirit-r.htm

tinfan82 07-26-04 07:27 PM

I think black face with white lighting would look awesome and if you have some money add some DEFI BF it'll be a perfect match.

I was thinking something like that too :)

rx-7 ml: I dont think that will be a problem, did you want km/h or mph though?? I dont think it should be too hard since he offered both for the VW.

7racer: I will ask which face colors are possible and post as soon as I hear back

Here is something I was playing with..... I'm trying to get a few styles to send in email to him.

Also one more... This one is kinda crude but something to start from. The pictures I had to start with were small low res.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Skele4door 07-27-04 09:10 AM

Do you know if he can ustomize where the redline is? I'm throwing an LS1 in my FD (no flames please) and I'd like for the gauge to actually match the engine. I'm pretty sure there would be some other LS1 swap guys that would be interested as well.

apex_sideway 07-27-04 11:45 AM

I'm not sure i like the day look of the gauges but at night they look awesome!! I'm spending all of my money on reliability mods but i have any money left over i'll try to join the group buy.

broken93 07-27-04 12:28 PM

Are we still just speculating? Again, I have a cluster available for prototyping - so far we seem to have 6 ppl, including me; so can we get some more interest or what? Come on, these look nice!

Herblenny 07-27-04 02:32 PM

I have a question.. I remember seeing SC400 gauge cluster and I want something like that.. So, do they also use different bulbs or all done by the gauge face?? I'm really looking for Defi BF type.. The pic on the first page looks awesome.. but not sure how it looks when the lights not on. Can you post some more pics??

7-sins 07-28-04 02:14 AM

Ok here is the updated list 8 to be exact:

herblenny
vel525
tinfan82
broken93
sanfordman
prew
rx-7ml

If I can get different color faces or lower redline markings I guess we will have our 10, I just got to check with the guy still.

Skele4door, you guys thinking like 6 for the redline? It would probably be cool, same gauge just lowering the red markings, I will check.

Herblenny, I am thinking these are like the SC400... I haven't seen those but the gauges are going to light up, no blubs.

Broken93, no speculating once I get 10 & have got the go ahead from him you guys can start sending the cash and getting this going. If I need the cluster I will let you know.

I posted the rough templates that I have made for his reference. I think the three choices are going to be: OEM, Mazdaspeed, and Ferrari. The 99s look too close to OEM and I think the Mazdaspeed is much more of a unique look.

Right now I just posted to show you guys another thread with lots more pics including, ANGLED & LIGHTED shots. I will probably buy his VW setup tomorrow but by the time I have received, installed, and taken pics I would like to have this project already in motion.

Hmm, I'll have to post over at torquecentral.com to see what the consensus is. I'd say it'd probably be more like 6500-6750 on average. I'll get back with you with what we come up with. BTW, I'd assume there would be at least 5-10 V8 swap guys interested, so maybe it'd drop the GB into a lower price bracket.

RedR1 07-28-04 09:23 AM

7-sins, count me in. Now with the back lighting, that would glow green with a black face correct? Or, is the color adjustable? As long as it glows green, im there! The Ferarri set up looks awesome.

Also as with payment methods, what do we do, send you the money via paypal, send him the money, etc etc? Let me know, as my Defi's need something that matches as opposed to the stock set up.

Herblenny 07-28-04 09:31 AM

Chris, thanks for that pic.. thats very nice!! I like it.. i even like how this looks..

Do you have a pic of how it used to look like?? I'm sorry for asking for so many pics..

Ok, I just sent a email to him with all of the questions and the templates I had made... I attached the three styles. The list is at 9 now, if I have to I will buy a second set, maybe resell it later because I know once these are installed people are going to want them.

RedR1, I don't think the color is adjustable. Once it is made thats the way it is, but green will not be a problem at all.

Herblenny, The cluster pretty much looked like the OEM style before. Except that the gauges are NOT back lit. VW did a really shitty design on their gauges until 99+. They lit the cluster up from the front, everything white on the face would reflect the color of the light, including the needles.

This is what the lighting looks like after changing just the bulb to blue... pretty cheap huh. Stock is green, thats why the LCDs are still green.
http://www.vwot.org/community/module...lue_guages.jpg

After making overlays for a stupid designed cluster like that I can't wait to see what our cars will look like.

Herblenny 07-29-04 12:21 AM

Thanks for the pic.. I really like how that VW gauge cluster look (converted).. Simple and clean.. looks awesome!!

poolman1126 07-29-04 11:07 AM

I'm in, if there's room for another.

RedR1 07-29-04 11:18 AM

Can't wait 7-sins, green lighting, black face = cash in hand :D

RedR1 07-31-04 09:59 PM

bump

7-sins 08-01-04 11:17 PM

Sorry for the delayed response but I do have a update!

We do have our 10 so this is pretty much a go. List as of now:

vel525
tinfan82
broken93
sanfordman
prew
rx-7ml
RedR1
poolman1126

I got his paypal & mail address whichever works easier for you guys. I am just waiting to see how much he wants down then we can get this rolling. I will send off my cluster I am pretty sure because dont know if I will get my car running anytime this year... anyway.

V8 guys: The redline can be set at any point... let me know if anyone else is interested and if there is a preferred redline point.

White face: He said he is trying other solid colors and will update me with any further info.

Thats the word for now,
Chris

jacobcartmill 08-02-04 10:20 AM

i'm in. but i need a price.

i want the green back but with a red needle. is that possible? and could you offer two gauge styles? the white back with red needle and the green back with red needle.

I AM DEFINITELY IN (if you can get me a price)

edit: i just realized this is for FD's? i have a damn 91 turboII, damnit! :(

post this in the fc section and you'll definitely get 10 people.

poolman1126 08-04-04 11:32 AM

Any more news yet? Price, options, etc?

ArchangelX 08-04-04 11:55 AM

I'd like something with a more updated look....maybe similar to the RX-8...that would help bring the car up to a more modern level.

How easy is it to change out the stock ones, anyways?

7-sins 08-04-04 08:28 PM

Well I came home from work one evening and for some reason my computer had turned itself off and would not come back on. I thought I seriously fried some shit cuz I am cooling it with water and if that stuff leaked.... anyway, after looking around it seemed to be my power supply. I ordered one out on moday but with shipping from the west cost, it will take its time.

I never looked at the templates from another monitor but now I see my contrast must be way down with my computer because they DO NOT look solid at all... LOL I guess I will have to fix that.

ArchangelX, I was going to go with something more updated but I think that the 99 spec cluster looks too close to a stock cluster, I think offering the Mazdaspeed & Ferrari will stand out better.

poolman1126, I will get back with you guys on that when I get my computer back running.

jacobcartmill, Sorry I dont have it for the FC but if these turn out good I dont think it would be a problem for him to make the FC. He is soon to have all 4 generations of the VWs then will do our project.

SWAT81 08-05-04 12:03 AM

I'm highly interested as well but does he do also the heater dash gauges as well? It would be a nice package deal.

SWAT81 08-05-04 12:49 PM

Bump, updates?

SWAT81 08-05-04 01:10 PM

http://www.blackcatcustom.com this is a good site also check it out

7-sins 08-08-04 06:20 PM

I was looking to order through blackcat but with a reverse glow set your gauges will light up a lot nicer. Maybe I will get the a/c controls through blackcat still. No updates as of now, but I will get my computer back running tomorrow.

rx-7ml 08-09-04 03:04 AM

Yeh, I looked at the blackcat designs a year or so ago. I thought they looked cheap and nasty. Even the a/c controls look nasty,.

Can't wait to get this deal sorted 7-sins. Look forward to getting an update :D

daem0n 08-09-04 03:43 AM

Can you still accept any new orders do you think?
