PDViper and ReadyKW, have either of autocrossed your car with the fully-converted rack? I drove a friend's car with looped lines (around a parking lot, not in a real autocross), and it felt good, but it would be great to hear about some real-world experiences.

thanks,

Sorry, can't help you. First, these are my initial impressions. I don't have many miles yet. Second, I autocrossed once in my life and hated it. I don't think I got much over 40 mph and it just seemed an exercise in how fast you could crank your steering wheel lock to lock. I think you could do it but you would have to work harder. If this is a big activity for you, choose carefully. For street driving or something like HPDE, I would do it.

My car is turning into a full Drag car and I dont autocross so sorry I dont have any info on that. I have been to 175mph with the manual rack and it felt pretty stable......

I wouldn't recommend it for autocrossing, where the power assist would be an asset for the arbitrarily tight turns. This mod is more for drag racing and road course driving.

... and anyone who changes spark plugs frequently.

True. In fact, the entire system runs a bit cooler when you clear up the space occupied by the power steering and A/C pumps.

After I eliminated them and dropped my radiator down and back about 1.5" to allow more air past it into the engine compartment, my fans never came on after shutdown unless I'd been running really hard on a very hot day. And changing plugs became a 5-10 minute process. :)

Unfortunately, there was no way to tell what difference it made in coolant temperatures using the stock gauge.

i love my maval rack... its one of my favorite mods!i have 1400 miles on it and love it the feedback is amazing! i will also never go back!!!

You know what I don't get. Is how bypassed pulley powersteering is worse than looped, I would think it would feel the same way?

scotty305 03-04-07 11:36 PM

Simply removing the pulley requires you to force PS fluid through the pump backwards whenever you turn the steering wheel. I've driven a car with a disconnected pulley and one with a looped line, and it's a very noticeable difference.

Can anyone tell me, which lines to loop? I'd like to try a looped system before I do the more complete conversion. I've got an 89 convertible, with TII swap (if it matters) and it has electronic controlled power steering. I assume that I want to block the electronic control pressure line and loop the other pressure line with the return hose?

Rx_Sam 02-20-09 03:03 PM

if you loop the lines do you have to fill the rack with p/s oil or not ?

KaiFD3S 02-20-09 03:25 PM

No you don't but leave some in there to keep things lubricated, when I took mine off, I went lock to lock once letting the fluid out then installed the loop lines....Loving it...I may get this Billet aluminum manual rack though just for a nicer piece plus 20lbs lighter as they say...

Rx_Sam 02-22-09 08:18 AM

Thx Kai :)
if i find the pictures how to loop them i know what tot do:tonque:

Bringing an old thread back from the dead, but I am selling my steering rack as I purchased the atomicrex racing rack (for the different ratio).

PM me if you are interested.

Rx_Sam 12-03-09 11:53 AM

Damian is it a converted rack you have? what would be the price ?

damian 12-03-09 01:07 PM

Read the first post of this thread :-)
Yes, it is a full manual conversion from Maval.

>>what would be the price ?

I would do $450 shipped.

I tried to post a FS thread twice, but it is not showing up no matter what I post. :-(

Damian, are you posting a state icon in the title? I know I forget to do that a couple of times and the mods delete the thread.

Trout2 12-03-09 02:17 PM

Damain,

I'd be interested to hear your comparison/thoughts between the Maval converted rack and the Atomic Rex.

I have an Atomic Rex rack and am satisfied with the purchase but I never had a converted rack to compare too. I've only driven cars with a loop line for short distance.

Jack
