Pillowball Bushings -- Great deal from Malloy Mazda (Oct. 20 - Oct. 31)

Since the demand was so high for a good deal on a set of 6 pillowball bushings from this thread (https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/pillowball-bushings-great-deal-malloy-mazda-now-june-30-a-424191/), I decided to call Ray Crowe again and start up the third "group buy" on the PBs.

The price went up a little to $315/set of 6 (you must order 6). I would also suggest that you guys order the 12 dust seals while youre at it. Mine were pretty worn. If you guys want to get in on this deal, call up the parts department (you don't necessarily need to talk to Ray Crowe, since he is usually up to his ears in work) and tell them that you want in on the 6 pillowball deal. You have from now until October 31st to get in on this deal. Just let them know that "Weili" (sounds like Willy) from the RX7Club sent you.:bigthumb:

That's a good deal - it's an afternoon job that will make a BIG difference in your car.

BTW, I HIGHLY recommend doing the dust boots. They're typically pretty heat baked and shot, and boots that don't seal well will cause the $300 worth of pillow balls you just bought to fail prematurely.

Here's my writeup on installing the pillow balls -

And, if anyone is willing to drive to Pensacola, FL I'd be happy to swap them out for you for a nominal fee :).

What are the part numbers for the dust boots? How many are needed - 2 per bushing?

DaleClark 10-20-05 07:09 PM

Not sure of the number, but you do need 2 per bushing - that's 12 dust boots total. I'll check with Ray when I call tomorrow and get pricing/part number - I need it for my writeup anyhow!

Here comes a stupid question. What is the different between this bushings and Jimlab's bushing?

DaleClark 10-20-05 07:27 PM

Jim doesn't make one for the pillowballs. These are spherical bushings, and need to move through a range of motion to work. It's like a using a socket on a universal joint as opposed to no universal joint.

There's really no upgrade for these bushings, as they're metal on solid plastic bushings, there is no compliance.

Yes, 2 per bushing. Ray knows the part number.

I am not sure if he'll ship to Malaysia. You'll have to check with Ray.

Here's one question: What is the price of the mazda speed parts? I understand that they have less rubber in them and are somewhat stiffer. Do they have a longer/shorter lifespan? I track my car a few times a year, and wonder if it would be worth the added expense.

Pillowballs arnt rubber bushings :)

maxcooper 10-21-05 04:02 AM

Do it! I think most cars need new pillow balls by now.

And though I am too lazy to update my site, JimLab has shown us that the bushings are metal/plastic and not metal/metal as I originally thought.

Great write up!

Mazdaspeed doesn't make pillowball bushings. The stock pillowballs are already zero compliance (until they wear out anyway!).

how much does the set usually cost from malloy?

BobfisH 10-21-05 10:01 AM

in the UK they are £50 EACH, which is about $90 - so this offer is pretty much half price for me, provided they can ship to the UK.

rotoober 10-21-05 10:12 AM

Thanks for the info guys! Got mine ordered today. I may also replace my strut mounts at the same time - With my new eibach's/koni setup, I'll almost have an all new suspension.
Car has 60K miles.

Browse through the other thread for a usual dealer price. Though, I would ask Ray for an original price.

Julian 10-21-05 11:07 AM

Speaking of bushings.

It looks like Mazda Motorsport is no longer carrying the firmer competition rubber inner arm bushings.

I just checked and they're still listed on the website? Click on "catalog" and then search with "F128" as the keyword. All the stiffer Mazdaspeed bushing part numbers begin with F128.

Julian 10-21-05 11:55 AM

yeah thanks, I found them too by search suspension parts; they have delisted them in relation to model, engine or year AND they only have one cars worth in stock

BobfisH 10-21-05 12:00 PM

Not bad!

just ordered a set - $55 to ship to the UK and $55 for the dust seals.

3-5 days to ship...

Ill post this thread up on some UK Forums too.

Sounds great! The more business we get to Ray, the lower prices we can get.:fingersx:

sherman2k 10-21-05 02:58 PM

Thanks for answering my question. So Pillowball Bushings and JimLab's bushing are for 2 different purpose. If I already had jimLab's bushing do I still need to replace Pillowball Bushing?
