oil temp. gauge install?
 

Well I did some searches; there were some great ideas and details on water temp gauge installs. (by Trexthe3dd/Alien7, and Adam c and others...) Thanks! (I will use a Defi D gauge for water temp) The installation pictures for water temp. were a big help.


I did not find quite enough detail to help me with an oil temp. gauge installation.

rynberg mentioned using a oil filter block adapter, and rotorbrain talked about tapping the upper oil cooler banjo bolt.

I need more detail to understand the banjo bolt method, and would like any comment from others who have used the adapter block. (I would probably use an electric Autogauge for oil temp.)

I used one of FC3s.org's ( http://www.fc3s.org/ ) Custom filter pedestals:

It provides two 1/8" npt ports, thought I only used one - that is an AutoMeter temp sender instaled in the pic

The easiest way is to get that bracket from FC3s......but I have heard of people mounting them by drilling the Oil pan.

is the FC3S piece direct bolt in? or is there some cutting?

The piece from FC3S.org is a direct bolt-in - remove the stock oil filter pedastal, install this one. I believe it also comes with the 2 O-rings between the pedastal and the block.

This is probably the slickest and cleanest way to do the install.

On my old FC turbo, I installed an oil temp gauge by drilling/tapping the banjo bolt for the oil return line. It was tricky, but turned out great. Biggest problem with doing that is you weaken the bolt, and it might be problematic down the road. And it requires drilling and tapping, which some aren't comfortable with.

VDO makes a replacement for the oil drain plug, that has a sender in it. Pull out the old oil drain plug, and put in the new one. It has a male spade fitting on the end for your wire to the gauge. It doesn't get any easier than that. :)

You do have to make sure the sender wouldn't stick too far down where it could be broken off - that would be WAY not cool.

I'm not that much of a fan of reading the temp from the oil pan drain plug. I helped a buddy change the oil that had the drain plugged tapped for a sender, and it made the oil change cumbersome.

Here's a pic of one. As you can see, it doesn't stick down very far. The spade connector is at a 90 degree bend to make it stick out even less. I have had mine for about a year and a half with no scraping problems.

Oil changes are easy. Just use an end wrench to remove the plug instead of a socket.

sweet, i can use that Pedestal to hook up my oil pressure and temp gauges. Looks pretty slick.

Call the 800 number for info. It may not be on the website.

Greddy makes an adapter so you can install both an oil pressure and oil temp probe. Pretty nice looking as well.

I thought about getting the Greddy piece, but several people here stated that it has made getting the filter off a real hassle. That FC3S looks like a bitchin piece because it replaces the stock pedestal and shouldn't raise the filter up a whole bunch. Is that right, Dale?

Is that correct? It's actually listed as a 86-91 product although they didn't seem to have one in their 93-95 products section.

Well I talked to them and they said that the FC one would work, all I would need to do is drill and tap it for the oil cooler line. They said the spacing was wide enough but I think it will be really close (do not know the size of the oil cooler link end). The spacing ID (inside the ped) between the two taps is about .985", the OD (out side the ped) is abput 1.42". Is the spacing to tight to tap for the oil cooler line bolt? Or any other ideas?

which type of sender unit would read more accurate?

well, i know i'm diggin up an oldy here, but can anyone give me a better line on were to find this infamous pedestal so i can do a nice clean oil temp gauge install? i can't find it at all on the FC3S.org website. does this mean that i'm screwed?

I was planning on getting it, but I too wanted to find out what was required to install on the FD before purchasing.

looks like you'd have to drill and tap a place for the oil cooler line to come off of the FC pedestal... i think i'm going to drop an e-mail to SpeedMachinePerformance and see if they happen to have a design for or a part for the FD sitting somewhere.
