oil smoke on fresh reman
I saw this after searching
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...+startup+reman I don't think its my turbo seeing as its a brand new TO4s...on a brand new malloy reman what in the motor will cause this "puff of oil" on start up...a bit after either long idles or heavy engine braking... sometimes. Its inconsistent. does the OMP do a extra "squirt" of oil on startup? I imagine on long engine braking(big hill), it is injecting some oil that is not getting burned because the fuel injectors are off too... Maybe my OMP is hyperactive injecting more oil than necessary? I've burned about 1.25 quarts in around 1000(break in) miles. do I have a bad motor? john |
You might have a bad map... what ECU are you using ??

Oil in injected based on duty cycle.. of MAF i think and RPM... so if the map is over injecting you have a very lubed engine... this is not neccisarily bad, just annoying and looks like you have an old beater when you start it up...
A properly tuned OMP will burn 1 Qt, every 2-3K depening on tune, and lead foot... with the majority of rotaries burning more in the 1.0 - 1.5qt's / 2k mi. Check / or have the map checked... |
maybe I should just toss in this GM 3-bar map I have sitting on the shelf :) I can not think of a better reason :) Gotta use the datalogit for something :)

Okay, but the 3Bar has nothing to do with the problem unless you're boosting above 16 psi...

but if my current MAP is miscalibrated...I thought thats what you were suggesting could be the issue...then a correctly calibrated one would(might) help.

Map and Maf are 2 different sensors... one is Mass Airflow, and sits on your UIM and the other measures pressure and sits on teh firewall.. but it's most likely not the sensor that's bad, it's likely the Map (Program) that's been tuned to add extra oil... or not been tuned so it's at it's factory default which might not be right for you...

How many miles are on the new engine? It is common to have the assembly lube smoke while it gets burned off.
My Atkins for the FC smoked for the first 500 miles or so after start-up evey time. It got better as the seals seated in and the compression came up. The oil seals on the rotors sometimes take some time to seat good. I wouldn't worry yet and just keep an eye on the oil consumption. FWIW: What type of oil are you running?( synthetics may smoke more while the engine seals are new..In my experience anyways) When the FC engine was smoking, everyone who thought they knew something told me the engine is "toasted already" Welll. almost 20k on the engine and it runs like a raped ape!! Soo I think you don't have much to worry about yet. BTW: I am getting a Malloy reman in the next 1-2 weeks( depending on when they show up at Malloy) I'll let you know of any similar issues. |
There is no MAF sensor on the FD. I am 100% sure of this.
The OMP maps I have downloaded are stock. the engine has about 1000 miles on it...but honestly...the symptoms seem to be getting worse, or I am watching more now. I am starting to push it now. I have been running Castrol gtx...umm...I think 10w-30. Maybe 15w-40? I can't honestly remember. i have 20w-50 thats going in tonight to see how that doesn. john |
Really !? That'd be news to me... unless they call it something different on the apexi ecu....

the FD uses a speed-density system to measure the mass of air entering the engine. RPM, manifold pressure, intake air temp, throttle position. No MAF anywhere in the system...stock or otherwise. I haven't seen a ECU system for a FD that goes to a MAF.

Well, good to know, anyhow,I don't think you're going to help things by putting a map sensor on it... by map I meant that the duty cycle for the OMP is calculated off of verious other sensors, most likely engie speed (rpm) and air volume, since that dictates how hard the engine is working... and if these settings are abnormally high, then the motor would over lubricate... or like your suggesting if any of the readings are high the ecu would get the wrong idea...
