Non Mazda source for hatch shocks

Replacement hatch shocks are now $200 or so for a pair so I was wondering if anyone has found a quality replacement source.

There are non OEM sets on eBay for $40 or so but I have had very bad experiences with the few eBay parts I have bought (and Dale has this negative report from a few years ago).

Take the oem out and go to auto zone or your local auto part store and find you one that is equal dimensions.

What about dampening? OEM shocks have different dampening strengths depending on whether the car is equipped with a wing or not. A random shock may likely not be strong enough to lift the hatch or may shoot it open too quickly.

moconnor,

My car's in storage so I havn't seen the parts in person for some time, but it might be worth looking into the feasibility of using Tein hood dampers/FEED dampers/whatever other company makes them. You might be able 2 use them if they will fit. Whether or not they will lift the tail...well...maybe grab some hood shocks from a car with a heavier hood (honda civic or the like).

Good luck with your search, I'm curious to know what you come up with as mine are starting to sag.

hood dampers are too short for the hatch.

Yup - the hatch shocks are about twice as long.

I gotta believe that if you go to Autozone or any other parts store and ask them if they have any for your car you would find some. I know these cars are rare, but that isn't a part that I think should be too hard to find. I don't know tho as I haven't needed to get them for my rx7 yet.

Tripple 7's 01-09-11 04:27 PM

Autozone has them via special order, by mighty-lift p/n B95589 and also by Sachs p/n SG227005

$25 or $31 each depending on brand I think.

Cool. Thanks.

Or $40 for both Sachs with free shipping on Amazon.

Do you have first hand experience with these?

[Edit: these might be the eBay shocks. The Sachs parts numbers match on this ad for example, though it does say 'interchange':

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hatch...t_2507wt_1165]

Also, partsgeek.com has them for $32 shipped for a pair. I will go ahead and order.

MattGold 01-11-11 03:04 PM

I have the Sachs shocks on order with Amazon right now. I will report back when I get them.

muibubbles 01-11-11 03:31 PM

please do! i need a pair!

when your trunk shocks DO work properly, is there still issue that the trunk doesnt lift up?since mine doesnt work properly i have to dig my finger to try to peel the trunk open... but im not sure if the shocks would fix this...

moconnor 01-11-11 04:02 PM

I am awaiting a set also from Amazon ($38 shipped for the pair). Will report back too.

Natey 01-11-11 05:03 PM

Please do. My OEM ones are also getting weaker.

88SE_HI 01-11-11 07:05 PM

Aren't there different ones for if you have a rear spoiler?

DaleClark 01-11-11 07:43 PM

I will confirm from the original poster, I bought some off Ebay for a project car I had. They were CRAP, poor design, just terrible. I ended up throwing them out.

I still have the originals on my car, just did a quick search and that's what i turned up.

rotarypower101 01-12-11 08:13 PM

I know thats not what everyone wants to hear, but I got a set of stock 99 spoiler compatible rear deck struts at considerable cost.....
Dont regret it one bit! Good investment IMO

Every time I pop the hatch and it hovers just above the latch, and goes right up and holds with little effort , I smile with self satisfaction.

So if anyone is trying to get around purchasing a good set for the 99 spec wing, treat your self, the OEM units work so well!

Icemastr 06-23-11 09:00 PM

Has anyone actually tried the Sachs SG227005 and gotten them working?

Fritz Flynn 06-23-11 10:29 PM

I have some good stock hatch struts.

65 shipped.

PM if interested.

phrost 06-23-11 11:03 PM

Wait so, on my r1 with the r1 wing, when I pop the hatch, the hatch should fully open on its own? I've always had to pull it up maybe 6 inches or so and then it would fully open and stay open with no issues. Do I need new struts or is this somewhat normal operation for a hatch with an r1 wing?

Icemastr 06-24-11 11:47 AM

Also has anyone found replacements that will keep the hatch up with a 99 spec spoiler?

ghiaguy 06-26-11 03:24 AM

I just bought a pair from here 22 each. Hope they work .

These were a no go. The air pistons were the right size but there were clearance problems with the bracket they came with causing the little e-clip they came with to pop off.

MIBagentQ 07-12-11 09:04 PM

I bought mine off amazon, been working perfectly for the past 2 years and counting
