neo synthetic > redline oil
 
another happy customer that has switched from redline MT fluid to neo 75w90HD gear oil.

the old redline fluid i had in my tranny only had 6k miles on it. my shifter was notchy @ low rpms and worse @ higher rpm shifting. i decided to give neo a try since i was already under my car changing out the diff fluid in my kaaz.

switching from redline to neo made a world of difference. i was even more surprised at the results since the redline fluid wasn't that old.

needless to say im sold on the gear oil and ill only be using it from now on.

I just put neo in mine, both in the tranny and diff. We'll see how it goes when I get it back on the road.

I've been wanting to try Neo for a while, been using Redline for years. I've heard many people say that Neo really made a big difference.

Where did you get the Neo at?

i bought it locally though mazdatrix. not sure if i got a good deal on it but id rather support the local rotary businesses around my area. paid $8.25 per qt.

1-gal is perfect to fill both the tranny and diff. I warn though, they charged me $15 for shipping which I thought was a little ridiculous. So it ended up costing me like $65 total.

FWIW, limited subjective experience over the last 9 years or so.....
NEO > Redline MT90 > 75w90 syn gear oil (I think it was Mobil 1 but can't remember for sure) > OEM gear oil (with ~ 50k).

The biggest difference I noticed from Redline to NEO is that NEO seemed a little better performing when cold. But I wonder if that was just because it was fresh, and the RL was a couple years old. Do the mulit-viscosity additives for gear oil degrade with time like they say engine oil does?

Any of you run Amsoil before? I've never tried Neo before, but i like Amsoil a lot better than Redline.

I figured I'd give Amsoil a try since there's a local dealer. Going from Redline to Amsoil I noticed it being less notchy while cold but it's still slightly present. I tried a mixture of small amount of ATF+gear oil and then straight gear oil; didn't notice any difference between the two.

This winter I will be making the switch to Neo.

Synthetic gear oils generally do not have viscosity modifiers, so no.

Redline offers MTL and MT-90. MT-90 is the correct choice for this application. MTL should not be compared to these oils. I also see they have an MT-85 now, which may offer better shifting due to better synchro bite, but MT-85 will provide less protection for the gears.

I have used Amsoil MTG, MT-90, and Neo 75w-90. I could tell no difference between any of them.

I just changed my gear oil last weekend to NEO 75W90HD and drove my FD for the first time this year. The old oil was pretty clean,gears all shift smoothly except that notchy 2nd gear but now with the new neo synthetic oil the gears are kinda stiff and it doesn't feel rite. I don't feel like its going in a gear, it just slides rite into gear but kinda stiff. Also it took the entire gallon of gear oil. Does this sound rite? Thanks.

I just changed the oil last month with Mt-90. Going into 1st and 2nd is notchy when cold. I going to try Neo next time around.

Honestly, I used both and found that valvoline non synthetic 90w from autozone felt the best. Trick is to take out th shifter and add some gear oil to the top.

Too much. IIRC, just over 2.5 quarts + maybe a pint in the shifter housing. See FSM.

And grease the ball and lower bushing of the shifter. That makes a difference.

Telling you guys, iv used neo in my box for 3 yrs thinking it would make all the difference. After my last motor swap I just put regular fluid in, made sure it was not overfilled and I filled the shit out of the shifter hole/slot.. Car shifts like butter comparatively. No point in my book for using neo or redline again.

Thanks for your input!! I'll try to get a measuring jug today to put the rite amount of oil in there but what I don't understand is the same amount of oil came out is the same amount I put in..only difference is I put i new oil and I'm pretty sure its a different brand oil was on there first. Thanks for the advice on putting oil in from by the shifter also.

Go to Page J-6 of the Factory Service Manual and follow the instructions for changing gear oil. Two drain plugs, one fill plug which you should remove FIRST. If done properly, with the car level, it's impossible to put a gallon of gear oil in. It would run out of the fill hole as fast as you put it in.
And know that you can't fill the transmission from the shifter reservoir. The two aren't directly connected. For details on that read though page J-61 and J-62.

which type of NEO do y'all use? 75w90 HD or the RHD version?

and its OK to use the same type in the trans and diff?

Use the HD unless you'll be changing fluid regularly. Same for the diff.
