Is my rx7 r1 or base? Baffled! pics inside
2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I have a 93 rx7. I was almost certain it was an R1 before I realized I didnt have the front lip. It has the r1 tail, and dual oil coolers. It also has a red strut bar.

Sounds like an R1 to me. The front lip could have gotten damaged and removed over time.
|
What seats does it have?
|
I cant tell whether or not they are suede or cloth, but i am pretty sure it is suede, feels like it. http://www.advancedjapautoimports.co...3s%20seats.JPG they look like that, my seats have been in the sun for a while so they turned purplish like in the link
|
suede seats - R1
cloth mesh seats - Base unless the previous owner(s) swapped them out |
yup! mine is definitely r1 because it does not have mesh. WHERE IS MY R1 LIP!! haha, thanks guys! Also, any links to an oem r1 lip?

Yea i was considering that. Thanks! where in san jose do you live? I live south san jose on Monterey by walmart
|
the base should have "leather" seats, the r1 had suede and yours are suede. You have the base lip fyi too.
|
Yep, you have a base lip. I just removed mine.
Consequently, R1 duel coolers are the dead giveaway. |
Can the answer be discovered in the VIN?
BTW Nice looking ride! |
^maybe from a dealer.

BTW Nice looking ride! Honestly, everything that makes an R1 can be swapped to a base. The VIN is the only absolute designation. The car looks relatively stock, so it is unlikely the previous owner went through the trouble, especially without adding the lip. But if you want to be sure, call your local Mazda dealer, they can tell you. |

You can also hit up Mazdausa.com and put in your VIN, gives a lot of info about your car.
Last time I checked the R1 lip spoilers were like $105 or so, get it! Another giveaway - R1's don't have cruise control. Dale |
hmm 105 bucks. Should I just get a new front bumper, or leave it stock and get a lip
|
R1s don't have BOSE, cruise, fog lights, or a sunroof, but do have the front lip, rear spoiler, dual oil coolers, strut tower bar, and suede seats
Tourings have BOSE, cruise, a sunroof, fog lights and leather seats, but no front lip, rear spoiler, dual oil coolers, or strut tower bar Base has cruise, clothe seats, but no sunroof, no front lip, no rear spoiler, no fog lights, no BOSE, no fog lights, no dual oil coolers I think that's all the visible stuff... this is just a theory, but if you're car was ever in a front-end collision it is entirely possible the company that repaired it didn't order the front lip. |

^ probably dealer added to seal a deal on the car. Just like dealers adding sunroofs to FC's.
|
you can add cruise, sgtblue on here did it, possibly a few others, the main control parts are all there, you need to add the on/off button, the accel/decel/set switch on the steering wheel, and the cable in the engine bay, I think that's it.
edit: enjoy cruise on an R1, that's one of two things I wish mine had (the other being base seats, I don't care for the suede) |
Most of the signs point to that car being an R1. Although the R1 lip is functional (reduces front lift at high speeds), I'm not the biggest fan of how it looks.
There is a sticker on one of the door sills that may say 'sport suspension' or something like that. I posted a photo of the sticker from my 1994 Base model in this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/ive-got-strange-options-r1-base-pics-inside-664884/ There may be more R1 vs Touring vs Base differences posed there also. |

This is what I did. And while it doesn't give "a lot" of info, it'll give you the trim level and any dealer done maintenance records. |
Where on the mazdausa site do you enter the VIN for this info? I can't seem to find the correct field

Call up Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda at 888 533 3400, he sells the R1 lips for very cheap. He also can probably tell you if the car is an R1 as per the VIN.
He will hook you up. Great guy! |

it seems like there were fair number of dealerships who didn't put it on, particularly in snowy parts of the country. |

when the car was delivered to the dealership, the r1 lip was in the trunk, and the car had the "normal" lip on it.

Well it did come in handy on the long trip back after picking it up. I'll be sure to enjoy it some more once the rebuild is done... sigh. And you also had a good point staticguitar313, but I don't know how to multi-quote ha Did the Topic Creator ever figure out what he has??? haha |
Quick question, do the r1/r2 have a different between them? or are they all the same?

See I've heard this before too. My 7 has all the tell tale signs of an R1 except that it has factory cruise control. So I went to mazdausa.com when I bought it many moons ago and entered my vin and it confirmed that my 7 was in fact an R1 even though it has factory cruise control. Strange huh? She is a special snowflake :icon16:

Are the lips different?

No

yellow was replaced with silver. there were a TON of little changes to the 94 cars in general, but that's all that was R package specific. |
Where can u buy a lip online?
|
Contact the Ray crowe guy. He sells cheap stuff, so i have heard
|
parts.com also sells them.
|
+1 for ray crowe from mally mazda. IMO the best place for buying new oem parts. Great service, prices and fast shipping. Im sure many others on this forum agree
